frogbs, Friday, 1 February 2019 01:54 (five years ago) link

that's especially odd though, since Tim and jaymc tied for most votes in the top 77

rob, Friday, 1 February 2019 01:55 (five years ago) link

The funny thing is that I had equal highest representation of my votes in the top 77 (15/25), and of everything I voted for "Promises" was probably the biggest actual chart performer?

great poll as always! i haven't gotten to the top ~20 or so yet but i can hold off for a little bit since as usual it looks to be the most boring part of the poll, at least based on the ones i know (yes i know some of the ones i voted for made it up there). whytf do ppl enjoy that particular mitski song. props to the pollrunners, voters and moka for the terrific graphics!!

last thoughts for now: both ariana grande songs that placed in the top 10 deserve to have been 78'd and are only impressive as seamlessly assembled, hyperefficient industry products. (yes i know i voted for a different ariana song that could also be described similarly.) i am starting to get sick of the 1975, the 'poptimist ;)' band for rockists, but alas one of my few heterosexual male friends has recently notified me that he really loves the new album (unsure if he'd heard any of the previous ones) so i guess i'll have to listen to it in full since i can't afford to lose any of those these days. i like "boo'd up" okay (not as much as "trip") but am sometimes perplexed by how little justification ppl seem to give for why they supposedly love it so much. surprised in a good way at how many ppl in the rundown enjoyed "long as i live" despite never having heard it before -- do turn on a grown-folks r&b station sometime! "before i do" not placing last year was a fucking disaster.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but you voted for that Kim Petras track, so... GTFO

seamlessly assembled, hyperefficient industry products

Leaving aside any general objection to this kind of description one might have, it seems to me that one can no longer (if one ever could) say from a production/creation standpoint that this description applies to "No More Tears Left To Cry" or "Thank U, Next" more readily than it does to much else studio-created "pop" in the broad sense - e.g. including, say, Wizkid.

What perhaps marks out Ariana, and these two singles in particular, is not anything about them as products in isolation but rather the systems of meaning into which they are received - their ready memefication (people posting instagram picks of themselves on profile in greyscale with a burst of rainbow light; the immediate sloganisation of "thank u, next"), largely made possible by ariana's status as the people's diva and locating her in a relationship of both similarity with and divergence from beyonce (sweaters with pink "surfboard" slogans; "I woke up like this"). You might describe the way they enter the new media slipstream as "seamless" and "hyperefficient" but there's nothing interchangeable with other pop products about those qualities.

It seems to me that if one was going to criticise them ("thank u, next" in particular) it would be to argue that much of their appeal is premised on these contextual effects, without which they're (it would be argued) weaksauce not hotsauce.

But since one does not have to divorce the songs from those effects, I ranked "thank u, next" pretty high up my list.

Tim F, Friday, 1 February 2019 04:04 (five years ago) link

It’s also just a lazy description — you can literally hear the “seams” in “NTLTC,” that’s partly why it’s so compelling and unusual.

i stan corrected (morrisp), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:10 (five years ago) link

(It repeatedly employs an abruptly/harshly clipped vocal hook!)

i stan corrected (morrisp), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:15 (five years ago) link

kind of amazing that any "industry product" description of ariana's work, ESPECIALLY thank u next and no more tears to cry ignores the terrorist attack that intersected with her life only a year and a half before. both those songs are easily read and recognizable as deeply human responses. pop can be commercial and honest and it's silly to refuse to acknowledge that.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:37 (five years ago) link

yeah I def reacted to "no tears..." specifically with that context in the front of my mind

resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:38 (five years ago) link

and the association is still there

resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 1 February 2019 04:38 (five years ago) link

Tirzah – “Holding On” - wasn't sure how i was gonna dig it when they started playing 3 blind mice on a default synth setting but this one really comes together nice! i really like how clear her voice comes thru, it's a low key wonderful voice. if other songs are similar i could for sure see myself getting into this (in a way i didn't with e.g. nite jewel b/c i only liked one song)

― they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.)

This was one of my favorite songs of the year and one of my favorite albums of the decade. If I were a musician this would be the kind of album I’d love to create. It sounds like two good friends having fun with a 4-track and most of the time that’s the sort of vibe I look for in music.

Thursdays too forks got up early
and posted results in the blueblack cold,
then with jittery hands that ached
from perhaps an office job, who knows, made
ilxor hearts blaze. Everybody thanked Moka.

I’d wake and hear the votes splintering, breaking.
When the receptions were warm, he’d taunt us with fake-outs,
and slowly I would compose and then delete posts,
fearing the chronic angers of ilm.
