2018 Albums Poll: Thread of Stats, Ballots and High-Minded Schadenfreude

Albums that would have made my list with what I know now: Idris Ackamoor & the Pyramids, Die Wilde Jagd (possibly), Mariah Carey. Dark horse: Sons of Kemet.

Not exactly successful with my nominations, I was the single voter for each, the Heavy K excepted. But do check out the Akan album (fantastic Ghanian rap)!

Closest neighbour: longneck (hi again!). longneck, rob and me are the Complex posse, apparently? I’m sure I’ve read some articles of theirs through links, but I just checked and that is one ugly website. Was The Fader not available?

Final word: simmy simmy ya, simmy yam simmy yay!

Apparently my biggest genre is "escape room", which made me p WTF, but led me to this interesting article: What Is Escape Room?

I got this as my biggest genre too, and I love Glenn's definition of it in the article. I guess it sort of fits what I voted for.

I didn't vote as usual, cos I didn't feel like I'd listened to enough 2018 stuff to do a good ballot, but I just looked at my music.xls and apparently I listened to 209 releases from 2018 (tbf a lot of those are singles not albums), but I've only heard 6 of the top 77 albums! so I guess I've got a lot to listen to...

I know Metal is niche around here but we do take a loose definition of the word and its really a noisy/heavy rock/metal and subgenres poll which means we have nominations .
It's also not US-centric at all and many non-English singing bands get in.

So if everybody could just take a wee look at the nominations and if you like anything please vote.

I'm not surprised I was the only voter for Meg Bowles, but I do find it odd only 3 people beside me vote for Jlin... Didn't her previous albums do really well in these polls? I thought Autobiography was quite good too, but maybe the fact that it's a largely beatless soundtrack/mood piece made it less popular?

― Tuomas

Yeah, despite being a huge Jlin fan I never really spent any time with this one. I think I said on her dedicated thread that it wasn't really marketed as a "Jlin album" but more a soundtrack to someone else's thing, so that made it have less urgency for me.

emil.y, Friday, 8 February 2019 15:20 (five years ago) link

it was really good, I enjoyed it, but maybe the shock of the new isn't as strong as that last one and, well, her music's super and everything but I really have to be in the mood.

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 8 February 2019 15:44 (five years ago) link

there are so many albums that I should have spent more time with and probably are right up my alley -- the Lotic and Vessel ones come to mind -- but I spent so much time discovering music from previous years in 2018 that I didn't catch up with all the new releases

I'm wrapping my brain around the whole genre-as-appeal-group thing spotify has going with "escape room". going to start telling people that's my genre

mh, Friday, 8 February 2019 15:54 (five years ago) link

The Vessel album is fantastic and could easily have been my #1
