As a Koffee fan I was insanely vexed by my friends introducing me to both the Ye cover and Rapture yesterday. I have cool friends though.

It's good, but since the original is perfect it also seems a bit unnecessary.

pretty great! I kind of wish they'd actually done a real remix so it would feel a little more necessary, but Govana's verses are great. Good video too

Missed this completely, dropped a month ago: Koffee and Chronixx jumping on Sheeran & Bieber’s “I Don’t Care”...

Love this obvs
Very unexpected feature, but Gunna sounds good I think? Lyrics not exactly on point but whatever. Izy Beats has quite a resume building (he produced that nice Jorja Smith/Burna tune too).

odd but enjoyable video for the Daniel Caesar "Cyanide" remix, gives her verse the spotlight and reduces exposure to Caesar's questionable pas-tois (though I basically dig the song):

when u hear the other tracks i did with her. KMT it’s looooooong ! https://t.co/M9stGiWj1y— JAE5 (@JAE5_) January 24, 2020

She is awesome on that track (outshines J Hus imo!). It's funny how very slowly her and Burna Boy are moving toward appearing on the same song together. V pleased about Jae5's involvement in her album, assuming that's what's being implied here
― rob, Sunday, 26 January 2020 15:42 (four years ago) link
So she won the Grammy last night, and coincidentally I happened to hear "Toast" on the radio and look her up right after she'd won. Late to the party, I know. Great track and the whole EP is good.

I made a joke on the Grammy thread, but it is genuinely cool that she won as I swear if there's a Marley nominated it literally always goes to them whoever the hell they are. Anyway: delighted you discovered Koffee

they softened Toast a bit too much for me, but I really dug "W"
― rob, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 14:54 (four years ago) link
Was W originally written for Rihanna? I always get that impression when I listen to it for some reason.
― human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 20:20 (four years ago) link
do you mean the lyrics?
― rob, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:06 (four years ago) link
Lyrics, melody, hip hop adjacent toned down reggae sound, gunna feature, etc. It all sounds like something she (and the team) might have attempted to write for Rihanna but used themselves when she (or her team) turned it down. But it's just a hunch, nothing more
― human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:09 (four years ago) link
yeah I can kind of hear what you're hearing, though I think there might be a few too many word per bar for someone who's more of a singer than rapper. I have mentally filed that Rihanna "reggae" album under 'so not gonna happen' (of course I will be thrilled if it materializes)
― rob, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:12 (four years ago) link
Didn’t Rihanna “hire” her for exactly that purpose, or is that what you’re referring to?
― breastcrawl, Tuesday, 28 January 2020 22:38 (four years ago) link
yes there was a rumor (mentioned upthread iirc) about her being one of the many JA musicians said to be involved in the possibly mythical R9 "reggae" album

Koffee-free content, still relevant:Last night I dreamt I saw the new Rihanna video premiering on TV, and it was a South African-inspired dance track, supposedly amapiano, though from what I could pick up it didn’t really sound like that.
― breastcrawl, Wednesday, 29 January 2020 08:42 (four years ago) link
ha ha. W sounds like something someone like Koffee might have written if they wanted to make a 2020 Bitch better have my money/Work for her. If it was turned down it was probably because it's not as outright swaggy as those two are. But it's not too far off either. I'm sure Koffee would have added some words for her own version.Anyway, W is one of the serios growers of late 19. It didn't make too much of an impression on me at first but it has staying power. I suspect it will be with us until summer at the very least, unless she drops something bigger inbetween.

I love Koffee, but on first listen this sounds a little too geared towards the early hours open air festival stage set. I love the second half with all the already released hits - but so far the first half seems to miss a little bit of edge. I can see myself warming to it though.

That's a fair take; it's only about 20 minutes of new music.
My disappointment is mitigated by otherwise being impressed with how methodically she has developed her career. But I can't deny it's a bummer we didn't get a whole set that sounded like Where I'm From, West Indies, Lockdown etc.
― rob, Saturday, 26 March 2022 14:45 (two years ago) link
I hear what you all mean by "slight," but tbh I love the album. I listened to it like 4 times in a row last night. I rolled my eyes the first time at the "Redemption Song" sample in the intro, but she makes it work musically and also I respect it as a sign of her ambitions — she wants to break big, and I'll be happy for her if she does. Overall I think it's basically delightful, everything flows nicely from one track to the next.
― a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 30 March 2022 18:11 (two years ago) link
yeah this is better than I gave it credit for on day one (didn't help that it was competing for my attention with the maximalist new Rema). There's something subtly sophisticated about how the production creates space(s) for her voice, but does so differently on every new track; the title track is particularly good at this but I hear it on Runaway and Where I'm From too. Very much agree about the flow too
one thing: if you are surprised to find yourself loving "Lonely" you should probably check out Chronixx if you haven't before :)
― rob, Wednesday, 30 March 2022 18:44 (two years ago) link
Being bedridden sick was probably not the best way to enjoy Koffee but I couldn't shake off the feeling that the last three previously released songs are still the strongest, followed by the two immediately before it. The impact of the album is completely overshadowed by the impact that the singles and EPs had.
― Nabozo, Thursday, 31 March 2022 10:16 (two years ago) link
Oh my wife is right, that is her singing "fiesta forever" (Lionel Richie quote) in the great song "West Indies." "Where I'm From" and "Locked Down" and a bunch of others are faves of mine also. Her best cuts have a pop catchiness but with rhythmic power that's not watered down.
