Lora MacFarlane...YOUR TIME IS NOW!

Seriously though, what a bummer. Tarfumes OTM, I do wonder how they'll carry on with the tour, release cycle etc.

I finally got to see them on the No Cities tour, and Janet live was a highlight.

i know she wasn't in the band for the first two records and i assume reports from this tour will be glowing, like "they managed to pull it off without janet!" and etc., but i do not see any point in seeing sleater-kinney live without janet weiss

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 1 July 2019 15:31 (four years ago) link

yeah, i was planning to see them and probably still will but this definitely puts a damper on my enthusiasm.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 1 July 2019 15:35 (four years ago) link

They had such a unique dynamic, and any other drummer will throw it off, regardless of how well they know the material. Not that it'll result in sub-par shows necessarily, but it seems unlikely there'll be any "Let's Call It Love"-type excursions on this tour.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 1 July 2019 15:38 (four years ago) link

she might not have been there since day one, strictly speaking, but sleater-kinney without janet is not sleater-kinney imo

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 1 July 2019 15:40 (four years ago) link

I don't know or care if she was "technically" skilled. She had presence, body, power. Above all, I could distinguish a Janet Weiss part from other people's.

Listening to the bass-heavy stuff from the new record, I was reminded of what Janet said in 2014 about S-K not having a bassist:

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/sleater-kinney-share-fiery-battle-cry-surface-envy-58584/

“I don’t really love low end. That big bass sound that hits you in your gut is unpleasant! Not having a bass allows for the drums to occupy an interesting space in the music, which I really love,”

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 1 July 2019 15:41 (four years ago) link

I already have tickets (as part of a birthday weekend trip with friends, no less). It will be interesting?

frustration and wonky passion (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 1 July 2019 15:41 (four years ago) link

Not sure if I'll be able to get excited about seeing them live now? Janet was key.

Philly show during No Cities tour felt really weak to me, but I blame the sound at the venue. So it's not fair of me but I needed this show to restore that spark and losing Janet is probably the worst thing that could have happened in that regard.

Evan, Monday, 1 July 2019 15:42 (four years ago) link

I had so many good experiences of seeing them live that I totally ignored the reunion and come back album. When I heard the new stuff and saw that TV performance it just seemed so desperate and lame, as if we needed more robotic sophistirock. I totally blame Annie Clark, but really the most responsibility lies with Corin and Carrie, who clearly decided to try and cash in. It's telling that Janets farewell specifies the change in direction.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 1 July 2019 15:43 (four years ago) link

One thing that stuck out to me in the Fallon performance is that it looked like Janet was playing to a click track (to trigger samples?), and she wasn't into it.

Cynically expecting lots of St. Vincent posturing and studio faithful renditions now. Yippee.

jesus. janet was THE s/k drummer as far as I'm concerned. already have tickets but we'll see if I wind up going.

akm, Monday, 1 July 2019 15:48 (four years ago) link

Really scared they'll hire GROHL.

Bill Berry's not doing much.

I had actually forgotten that they ever had another drummer!

phil collins is drumming again, just sayin'

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 1 July 2019 15:49 (four years ago) link

that would get me back in the fold

i'm reusing my own content here off twitter, but it's funny to me that kraftwerk is 45 years old and new wave is 40 years old but yet when an indie band breaks out the synths and drum machine it's still seen as "adventurous" - the later period synth album is almost a cliche in itself at this point, i think even the decemberists did it

no rock'n'roll fun required

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 1 July 2019 15:51 (four years ago) link

Sounds like a great opportunity for Neil Peart to come out of retirement

Lol at this as well as other suggestions.

I'll miss her, and the departure is an ominous portent, but some of the anti-St. Vincent crap I'm reading on Twitter's a bit much.

speaking of Bill Berry, Joey Waronker seems like the type of pro indie rock lifer that will get this

annie is a great producer, the songs from the album are fine. she didn't come on board as their stylist.

One thing that stuck out to me in the Fallon performance is that it looked like Janet was playing to a click track (to trigger samples?), and she wasn't into it.

I definitely noticed that too. When a big tour is imminent and your role in the performances has become "play to this click track and try to sound as much like a simple drum machine as possible", very easy to imagine a drummer as talented as her saying "you don't need me here for this"

One Eye Open, Monday, 1 July 2019 16:11 (four years ago) link

Shame that she’s left, S-K is Corin, Carrie and Janet for me. Saw them for the first time at Leeds Festival around the time of ‘The Woods’ and thought they were phenomenal, a proper power trio playing off each other as equals, pulling the songs about a bit and rocking harder than I ever expected based on their previous records. Janet’s a fantastic drummer.

michaellambert, Monday, 1 July 2019 16:14 (four years ago) link

I could absolutely see playing to a click/backing tracks being a deal-breaker. She's an exciting & expressive drummer but not necessarily about metronomic time, and doesn't seem to come from that session drummer mentality. And she developed her whole style around doing something else. There are plenty of drummers who are happy to play minimal grooves to a click.

This is the last band that should be playing to a click.

as someone who actually liked the new single (and not because of st. vincent either way) this discourse sure is making me feel like shit

Why, for liking something that other people don't like?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 1 July 2019 16:26 (four years ago) link

One of my first thoughts after seeing the Fallon perf was how that song would be 10x better if they ditched the robot beat & boring tempo and let Janet cut into it and put some energy behind it. What a waste.

One Eye Open, Monday, 1 July 2019 16:26 (four years ago) link

i do think the discourse of "blaming" St Vincent is let's say a little weird, or even feeling the need to immediately blame anyone.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 July 2019 16:31 (four years ago) link

S-K already recorded a record with synth bops in 2002; no way on earth does working with St. Vincent signify a pop sellout. And they've been faffing around for almost 20 years anyway, despite my admiration for NCTL. The new album might be cool, it might be okay, it might be a disaster, but the idea of Annie Clark producing them delighted me when I first read it.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 July 2019 16:33 (four years ago) link

I was being more than a little facetious personally, I actually think it's cool that S-K is interested in exploring different directions this deep into their career, though it still sucks if pursuing that direction cost them Weiss.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 1 July 2019 16:37 (four years ago) link

what does "faffing around" mean?

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 1 July 2019 16:38 (four years ago) link

wasting time

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 July 2019 16:40 (four years ago) link

The new songs have been a logical next step to No Cities, which was my least favorite SK album to this point. If it hadn't been St. Vincent, the sound would still be moving in this direction with someone else I think.
