Omni Trio, Carl Craig or Scott Walker. Think I'll go with C2

Landcruising is one of the few genuinely great techno albums. A Wonderful Life, Home Entertainment, Science Fiction are all standouts but it works from start to finish

Not sure if I should be surprised that Rancid ...And Out Come the Wolves didn’t get in.
considered it but it just bubbled under the bubbling under list!

wasn't expecting it to be on this list, but John Wall's sample-based Alterstill from 1995 is beautiful

Emmylou Harris’s Wrecking Ball is my 1995 fave. Voting Penthouse here. Good year for reverb.

re: rachel's - i lived in louisville in the '90s so i have a soft spot for that scene.
frogbs - good call on Ruins - Hyderomastgroningem; one of my faves of theirs

I could happily vote for maybe 20 these and might have chosen Labradford, Luna or Slowdive at the time. But I'll opt for Labcabincalifornia. I've had that CD forever but still don't feel like I entirely grasp what's going on. Which is nice.

A Guy Called Gerald's Black Secret Technology sounds strange to me in the moment but also it is kind of amazing
― Dan S, Thursday, 1 August 2019 01:36 (four years ago) link
am going to vote for Maxinquaye though, it's the album I love the most from 1995
― Dan S, Thursday, 1 August 2019 01:52 (four years ago) link
Really fancied listening to Black Secret Technology on my way home from work the other day but sadly it's not on Spotify.
This is the first of these lists where I actually heard several (i.e. more than two) of the albums during the year in question - at the time I would have voted for the Chemical Brothers (I got that and the Goldie album on CD for Xmas).

by the way out of the list i posted i want to specifically go out of my way to promote "black belt in boogie", wherein erstwhile Black Oak Arkansas imitators Raging Slab decided to go all-in on the Captain Beefheart sound. rick rubin refused to release it, and they released a revamped version (which is nearly as good) the next year. i cannot overstate how much i love this record; it's one of my most-listened to albums.

lots of great hip hop on this set, the Big L record is fantastic. Went Raekwon in the end.

Critics slagged off the jazzbo bits of "Timeless" but tracks like "Sea of Tears" are gorgeous imo. I hope the album gets a good few votes

Wow, I must have been bored to tears or sleeping that year. Of that stuff, I think only the rap stuff would be stuff I would listen to now. I need to think...

Sea Of Tears is pretty great isn't it. Timeless was my first impulse here.

Is The Great Escape the most 'has aged terribly' record ever?
didn't people think that in 1996?

I remember a Melody Maker review declaring it a masterpiece

I remember Melody Maker giving Catatonia album of the year and liking Suede's Head Music. MM went downhill pretty fast

Look at all those good albums. What a good year.
Voting Black Grape just to be contrary.

the black grape album deserves votes s its a really great album and the best album Shaun Ryder made imo
