What really struck me was how stuck in his own head Townshend seemed. By my count, five of his six songs are about his life as a musician and his fear (or acceptance) of creative bankruptcy. He had completely forgotten how (or no longer wished) to) create a character to voice through song - a void that Entwistle gleefully filled on his three songs.

I generally agree, and Townshend’s frustration (best/amply detailed in “New Song”) came on the heels of By Numbers, which was supposed to be their last album; and prior to that, he’d drafted a letter to his lawyer in late ‘73 saying he wanted out after the Quadrophenia tour was finished.(On his Rough Mix songs, he seems...well, happy, but without tempering the ambition.)That said, the rest of the band rejected a couple of songs that, while still in-his-own-head, weren’t the awkward grand pronouncements that “Music Must Change” and “Guitar and Pen” were. https://youtu.be/OCR-uby4a-4https://youtu.be/Np_ufVUyYuU(There’s a version of “No Road Romance” with Moon, but it doesn’t appear to be on youtube.)

“905” is great, and has probably my favorite Entwistle vocal. And John would point it out as an example of how Moon could easily play straight-ahead and simple when it was necessary.
