Ha, I kind of hate that Basement Jaxx song because that commercial it was in was always on that year. (Doritos?)

― All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r)

Yeah, it's one of the few singles from their peak era that I never really need to hear again. The Gary Numan sample was pretty clever, but it got old very quickly and I often skip it when listening to Rooty. Hopefully Romeo is still to come.

Voted “Breakaway”

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Monday, 14 October 2019 00:55 (four years ago) link

Didn't vote for anything that appeared today though like KP I gave lots of points to Aaliyah in albums. And like ufo I had fun discovering #92.

monotony, Monday, 14 October 2019 00:56 (four years ago) link

Definitely things to like in the Los Campesinos. Saved that one.

oh yeah, you me dancing is super joyful and also the easiest song ever to play on the guitar

I get this is a 2000s poll, but the fact that "Are we having fun yet?" is considered a Party Down thing and not a Zippy the Pinhead thing is extremely tilting to me.

yeah, see the end of the last thread - I forgot that there was a reference to Zippy in Party Down at all

That Jürgen Paape image is super cool.

jmm, Monday, 14 October 2019 03:01 (four years ago) link

sometimes spoon works for me and sometimes not, and everything hits at once all works and feels really immaculately put together. i did go back and listen to girls can tell during the voting and i had a pretty meh reaction to the rest of it.

thought about voting for bay of pigs, which i love, but i really associate it with the 2010s since it was on kaputt, and i felt weird about voting for something so long and meandering on a tracks poll.

circles, Monday, 14 October 2019 03:16 (four years ago) link

i like some spoon but have never understood why "everything hits at once" is so beloved and won the spoon poll. it's fine but not really a standout to me

i can understand how some might find "where's your head at?" to be impossibly annoying due to overexposure but i've managed to avoid that, probably just by being young enough. i still really enjoy it and almost voted for it but went with "romeo" (also considered "lucky star", they had a pretty great run of singles at the time)

ufo, Monday, 14 October 2019 03:25 (four years ago) link

Lucky Star is brilliant, as are Good Luck and Plug It In. I still think Kish Kash is their best album.

kitchen person, Monday, 14 October 2019 03:37 (four years ago) link

yeah i was surprised when revisiting them for this poll just how much i preferred Kish Kash to Rooty, i thought it'd be much harder to pick between them

ufo, Monday, 14 October 2019 03:38 (four years ago) link

That Spoon poll made no sense at all to me.

"everything hits at once" is good but "the beast and dragon adored" is the better opener

ciderpress, Monday, 14 October 2019 03:53 (four years ago) link

I was too late to vote, but I definitely was gonna give points to hiphop and ymd. I couldn't decide on an aaliyah song and was gonna just vote for the album. It's such a shame it has been made to rot by the guy who owns the rights to the album being rereleased/on streaming sites.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 14 October 2019 06:52 (four years ago) link

Happy that Los Campesinos placed as it was a last minute addition to my poll. Don't have too much indie in my tracks list but this is the kind I like, ragged and joyful.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 14 October 2019 06:57 (four years ago) link

oh hey, the rollout. had you! me! dancing! fairly high, big shoutout to the first place voter

devvvine, Monday, 14 October 2019 07:48 (four years ago) link

"Bay of Pigs" made my list. Great start so far.

Simon H., Monday, 14 October 2019 07:56 (four years ago) link

Carl Craig's remix of "Relevee" was my #2, sad to see it place so low. Other than that, the results so far are great, I also voted for "Hip Hop", "So Weit Wie Noch Nie", and "We Need a Resolution". I hated "Where's Your Head At" back in the day for its "edgy" rock sound, but presumably there are better Basement Jaxx tracks still to come.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 October 2019 08:02 (four years ago) link

Wondering where I'd heard that Jürgen Paape song before and just realised it was on the Erlend Øye DJ Kicks mix where he sings over the instrumental tracks.

Already two songs I would have voted for (Los Campesinos/Basement Jaxx) if I had noticed them on the nominations list. Imagine there'll be quite a few more

groovypanda, Monday, 14 October 2019 08:05 (four years ago) link

Since nobody raised any objections I've made a youtube playlist and will keep it updated.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 14 October 2019 08:31 (four years ago) link

Nothing I've voted for so far (think Eple was lost in the last cut?) but loving it all so far anyway. The destroyer track is my favourite thing I hadn't heard so far. Oh, and EP version of The Modern Age is better than Hard To Explain, sorry.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 14 October 2019 08:33 (four years ago) link

Imago, a small request - would it be possible (and appropriate) to append the year of release to the placements? I find myself wanting to check the dates for chronological context. I know I can look 'em up but maybe others would find it helpful as well. Thanks!

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Monday, 14 October 2019 08:41 (four years ago) link

just to be a pedant, this is the Bay of Pigs in the YT playlist is the Kaputt version, this one is the aughts version. (about 2mins longer than the Kaputt version)

absolutely killer selections so far though

another pedantic wish for lazy gits like me. would it be possible to add a youtube link to the tracks? that would be nice.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 14 October 2019 09:31 (four years ago) link

Great results so far! Nothing from my ballot but some where I voted for the parent album.

RE: Spoon, I don't know if 'Everything Hits at Once' is still my favourite song by them but definitely it encapsulates what they do very well - great melody and arrangement, that nice sort of slinky, minor-key feel. Love the vibraphone too.

Loving the images, especially the Jürgen Paape one. Great song too of course but I hope it's not the only Kompakt track to place.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 14 October 2019 09:38 (four years ago) link

will try to provide youtube links and years from here on

imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 09:49 (four years ago) link

Try Again had my vote, with the added pleasure of knowing it gives its sample to Sister Bettina.

Nabozo, Monday, 14 October 2019 09:55 (four years ago) link

Where's Your Head At? hasn't aged well for me either and although it introduced me to the Numan track it sampled I'm more likely to listen to the latter these days. Think I voted for Breakaway too though (my favourite track on Rooty).

nashwan, Monday, 14 October 2019 09:58 (four years ago) link

So Weit Wie Noch Nie too low!

excited btw! and loving the graphics, thank you tt and thanks imago and seandalai for putting it all together

I voted Hip Hop, Eple, SWWNN and Relevee remix iirc in my lame unweighted too-lazy-to-rank-things ballot so I'm enjoying the rollout so far but if those are all down here I might not see much else from my ballot later on. That's OK though, there were a few big pop hits I chopped off my ballot because I figured they'd get enough votes from other people (and just a few I loved too much to chop). Does feel like there'll be some surprises ahead...

(yeah, loved WYHA? at the time, still like the intro but get tired of the rest of the song quickly now and would also rather listen to the Numan these days)

a passing spacecadet, Monday, 14 October 2019 10:03 (four years ago) link

thanks imago / sean for being pollstars!
tt - these images rule :D
only one new to me is revelee - superb track this
what wonderful nostalgia - don't think i have had any of mine appear, forgot to vote for "so weit"!

nxd, Monday, 14 October 2019 11:06 (four years ago) link

i only have 6 more with graphics prepared as tt is choosing a very thorough and time-intensive method (and is out working atm) - i think i will post them before i head out to work, and hopefully amadeus will have produced by later this evening. mediocrities, i am your patron saint!

Two things I voted for! I'd already forgot I voted for Where's Your Head At, but I do love it. The other one was So Weit Wie Noch Nie, which is both a lovely song, and pretty seminal with it's placements on both Total 3 and Erlend Øyes DJ Kicks.

Frederik B, Monday, 14 October 2019 12:21 (four years ago) link

Wouldn't it be much smarter if we did it all while the Americans slept, and then we could spent the rest of the day making fun of them?

Frederik B, Monday, 14 October 2019 12:22 (four years ago) link

So far Bay of Pigs, which was my #2, is the only song on my list to place. It's one of those songs that I had no idea if it would place, since I could see many thinking of it as a 2010s track if they were first exposed to it via Kaputt. But its initial release in 2009 is heavily associated with my memories of that time, which is why I still think of it as a 2000s track.

Almost had Eple on there, but ended up taking it off.

MarkoP, Monday, 14 October 2019 12:40 (four years ago) link

Also, I will forever associate the phrase "Are We Having Fun Yet?" with some kids motivational poster that was either in my room or friend's room in the 90s, of which I can't remember the contents.

I loved that Los Campesinos! track back in the day. I hadn't listened to it in a good few years and had forgotten how frantic and life-affirming it was. Great song. Bay of Pigs is magnificent.

I loved that Campesinos song, and often put it on at parties when I was drunk and wanted to dance with someone, and that long intro always killed the party :) Still love it.

Frederik B, Monday, 14 October 2019 12:59 (four years ago) link

i still fondly remember hearing "you! me! dancing!" for the first time. such a wondrously joyful riff

ufo, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:04 (four years ago) link

I'm into these results! We Need A Resolution and Where's Your Head At? are my only votes so far, but You! Me! Dancing!, Relevee and So Weit Wie Noch Nie were all on my longlist. Voted for a different Royksopp track.

I don't remember if I voted for any JT songs but if I did it would prob have been this one.

Roz, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:09 (four years ago) link

I wasn’t really familiar with that Los Campesinos song before this poll! Suffice to say, it’s my favourite thing in the rollout so far.

For me, Cry Me A River is indelibly tied to when we went on our confirmation retreat to a monastery. We would listen to JT in our rooms, and then have to try and mimic Gregorian chanting for four hours.

tangenttangent, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:11 (four years ago) link

It's almost like 00's UK indie has more to offer than many had thought!
