The next artist isn't on Spotify! I really will have to remember the Youtube link...

imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:16 (four years ago) link

I like cry me a river but I hope it’s not the only JT song that places...

gyac, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:17 (four years ago) link

I couldn't vibe with Los Campesinos at the time, and I still can't now </curmudgeon> Fave thing here that was off my radar then is the Royksopp, so I must at least kinda know how to have a good time.

89. Joanna Newsom - Emily - 494 points - 8 votes - 0 FPVs - Y2K+6

choob

imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:21 (four years ago) link

Woo! Joanna Newsom is one of those artists where I wish I had nominated some tracks because Sawdust & Dianonds and Bridges and Balloons would've gotten my votes over this, but I ended up voting for this instead, lovely track.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 14 October 2019 13:24 (four years ago) link

Btw I went on a non-confirmation retreat but it was to a place where they woke us up by playing The Bartender & the Thief over the intercom and there was hot water for seven minutes a day. JT would have been a massive improvement.

gyac, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:28 (four years ago) link

Not that my disgusting opinion matters but my viscera puke up Joanna Newsom's voice as soon as it reaches my ears and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it.

pomenitul, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:29 (four years ago) link

Yes! love this. I remember being completely transfixed the day it leaked.

jmm, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link

god i haven't listened to Emily for years. I think my favourite off the album was the one about the bear though.

frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 14 October 2019 13:35 (four years ago) link

I like jmm’s post as a response to the previous one.

Despite an abiding love of harpsichord, I remain undecided about Joanna Newsom.

tangenttangent, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:35 (four years ago) link

Voted for Cry Me a River, both a masterpiece of texture and a masterpiece of pettiness

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 October 2019 13:37 (four years ago) link

gyac, what kind of retreat was that?! Stereophonics and water rationing sounds bleak.

tangenttangent, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:37 (four years ago) link

Going back a bit, You! Me! Dancing reminds me of a very specific point in my life. It reminds me of being surrounded by great friendsand having a really great time in general.

88. Sugababes - Overload - 498 points - 8 votes - 0 FPVs - Y2K

'the choob'

imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:46 (four years ago) link

That Joanna Newsom track is the first track in this poll that Im not familiar with but then again, I always found her music a bit too precious tbh

The World According To.... (Michael B), Monday, 14 October 2019 13:47 (four years ago) link

Oh nice, "Emily" is the first thing from my ballot to place. Still feels epic.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Monday, 14 October 2019 13:51 (four years ago) link

Wooooo! This was my #2 vote! I have listened to this song solidly from the day it was released. What an odd and dark sound for a girl group, I thought then, and it remains so. It’s so spare and cool but effortlessly catchy and I adore Siobhan’s short-lived vocal performance for Sugababes with its weird estuary inflections. It’s like the best pop song ever.

tangenttangent, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:52 (four years ago) link

there were lot of incredible sugababes singles to choose between and i ended up going with "freak like me" but i'm very glad to see this place

ufo, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:53 (four years ago) link

Hi! I'm here!

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 October 2019 13:56 (four years ago) link

Yesss voted for Overload. Agreed, Sugababes had so many incredible tracks but this stood out to me at the time and still sounds amazing all these years later.

Roz, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:57 (four years ago) link

Overload still sounds so fresh and mysterious. It's crazy to think it's almost 20 years old. They were such a great band for the first four albums, but then it started getting silly with all the line-up changes and sadly the quality of the music suffered.

kitchen person, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:02 (four years ago) link

I was the #1 for "You! Me! Dancing!." Soundtrack for a birthday party my class threw me last year (unlisted setting).

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:03 (four years ago) link

I'm loving how many of these tracks so far are ones I cut from my shortlist of 110, think I counted 4 now.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 14 October 2019 14:04 (four years ago) link

I never checked out Destroyer (lumped them in with other indie bands I don’t care for like... Spoon lol) but this Bay of Pigs track is quite good.

Roz, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:04 (four years ago) link

wld've been in my top 10 if i'd voted

still kicking myself for not nominating ghosts for the album poll

went for push the button to my brothers aghast - this is a tune tho

nxd, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:05 (four years ago) link

My sister went on one of these catholic retreats and the song was Scar Tissue

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 14 October 2019 14:06 (four years ago) link

Wow, I've never heard Overload. Really catchy.

jmm, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:07 (four years ago) link

*"overload" wld've etc

Probably considered too spicy for a load of teenage girls. There was some other song that got played but it wasn’t one that featured in this poll either.

gyac, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:08 (four years ago) link

Voted sugababes partly cos it's a great song and partly cos when they happened to come in the shop I was working in they refused to sign any copies of their album because the picture of them on the cover " didn't do them justice" which as excuses go is p good.

What a loveable bunch!

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:10 (four years ago) link

Overload is class but again I hope it’s not the only one of theirs that features 🙃

gyac, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:10 (four years ago) link

i think i speak for us all when i say that i am dead at clemenza's video/explanation

imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link

also we need to find a way for gareth campesinos to see that

imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link

That video is wonderful! I would watch a full 8-hour documentary of that.

tangenttangent, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:14 (four years ago) link

I was gonna vote Push the Button cos it's pretty unique but changed back to Overload final draft cos what a debut single and what an attitude it exudes

or something, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:15 (four years ago) link

also I too love Overload and it was a very late cut for me, glad it made it nonetheless

imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:16 (four years ago) link

omg, clemenza's class! That is the sweetest video.

devvvine, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:21 (four years ago) link

good to know this poll's credibility is assured

frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 14 October 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

I didn't vote for any Newsom but Ys made a big impression on me at the time and if I was going to pick a standout track 'Emily' would be it.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link

omg, clemenza's class! That is the sweetest video.

OTM.

And I'm listening on free Spotify so I'll make allowances but omg the sound of "Cry Me a River" is not holding up.

man does this song take me back to college

frogbs, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link

Little Miss Sunshine may have ruined this for me.

jmm, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link

Huh I've heard all of #100-94 and then none of the next six save JT. Welp, my work playlist for tomorrow is sorted
