I like jmm’s post as a response to the previous one.
Despite an abiding love of harpsichord, I remain undecided about Joanna Newsom.

Voted for Cry Me a River, both a masterpiece of texture and a masterpiece of pettiness
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 October 2019 13:37 (four years ago) link
gyac, what kind of retreat was that?! Stereophonics and water rationing sounds bleak.

Going back a bit, You! Me! Dancing reminds me of a very specific point in my life. It reminds me of being surrounded by great friendsand having a really great time in general.

That Joanna Newsom track is the first track in this poll that Im not familiar with but then again, I always found her music a bit too precious tbh
― The World According To.... (Michael B), Monday, 14 October 2019 13:47 (four years ago) link
Oh nice, "Emily" is the first thing from my ballot to place. Still feels epic.

Wooooo! This was my #2 vote! I have listened to this song solidly from the day it was released. What an odd and dark sound for a girl group, I thought then, and it remains so. It’s so spare and cool but effortlessly catchy and I adore Siobhan’s short-lived vocal performance for Sugababes with its weird estuary inflections. It’s like the best pop song ever.
― tangenttangent, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:52 (four years ago) link
there were lot of incredible sugababes singles to choose between and i ended up going with "freak like me" but i'm very glad to see this place

Yesss voted for Overload. Agreed, Sugababes had so many incredible tracks but this stood out to me at the time and still sounds amazing all these years later.
― Roz, Monday, 14 October 2019 13:57 (four years ago) link
Overload still sounds so fresh and mysterious. It's crazy to think it's almost 20 years old. They were such a great band for the first four albums, but then it started getting silly with all the line-up changes and sadly the quality of the music suffered.
― kitchen person, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:02 (four years ago) link
I was the #1 for "You! Me! Dancing!." Soundtrack for a birthday party my class threw me last year (unlisted setting).
― clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:03 (four years ago) link
I'm loving how many of these tracks so far are ones I cut from my shortlist of 110, think I counted 4 now.

I never checked out Destroyer (lumped them in with other indie bands I don’t care for like... Spoon lol) but this Bay of Pigs track is quite good.

wld've been in my top 10 if i'd voted
still kicking myself for not nominating ghosts for the album poll

My sister went on one of these catholic retreats and the song was Scar Tissue

Voted sugababes partly cos it's a great song and partly cos when they happened to come in the shop I was working in they refused to sign any copies of their album because the picture of them on the cover " didn't do them justice" which as excuses go is p good.

i think i speak for us all when i say that i am dead at clemenza's video/explanation
― imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link
also we need to find a way for gareth campesinos to see that
That video is wonderful! I would watch a full 8-hour documentary of that.
― tangenttangent, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:14 (four years ago) link
I was gonna vote Push the Button cos it's pretty unique but changed back to Overload final draft cos what a debut single and what an attitude it exudes
― or something, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:15 (four years ago) link
also I too love Overload and it was a very late cut for me, glad it made it nonetheless

omg, clemenza's class! That is the sweetest video.

I didn't vote for any Newsom but Ys made a big impression on me at the time and if I was going to pick a standout track 'Emily' would be it.
― Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:23 (four years ago) link
OTM.
And I'm listening on free Spotify so I'll make allowances but omg the sound of "Cry Me a River" is not holding up.

Huh I've heard all of #100-94 and then none of the next six save JT. Welp, my work playlist for tomorrow is sorted
― Vinnie, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link
IMO "Chicago" loses a lot of its impact when listened outside the context of the album. On it's own it kinda sounds like it's trying too hard for a big, sweeping sound, but within Illinois, everything else has been building up to it.
― icy bike chain rain (zchyrs), Monday, 14 October 2019 14:38 (four years ago) link
I am thinking to post another 1 now, and 5 later. Does that sound acceptable?

More pls
― gyac, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:45 (four years ago) link
its neat that a concept album about the state of Illinois saves its biggest punch for that song, I thought that was really cool
― frogbs, Monday, 14 October 2019 14:45 (four years ago) link
I have images down to 83. Shall I just go to there and see what we can cook up later? In case we have a busy day later in the week it might be good to go as far as possible...

I voted for Chicago. Soaring strings and singing about mistakes is a winning formula. The notion of being in love with the illusion of somewhere based on the emotional connections enjoyed there always seemed so romantic and amazing to me when I would hear this whilst unpacking 60 crates of Christmas books.
Will check, Neechy!
