Yeah, my corny ass voted for this.

Simon H., Monday, 14 October 2019 15:58 (four years ago) link

I don't know if that's the first two-time producer or not: "Anthems" and "You! Me! Dancing!" are both Toronto's Dave Newfeld.

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2019 15:59 (four years ago) link

Is a corny ass vote similar to a butt dial?

I don't know a lot of these. I was into Broken Social Scene but have never heard of this song.

frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:04 (four years ago) link

wow i admit that i don't know a lot of these, but based on some cursory listening there's a reason why i retreated into noise and techno for much of the decade— a lot of stuff that sounds very meh to me.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:05 (four years ago) link

like that Los Campesinos track is the sort of thing i'd genuinely like, and then the bells come in and i need to turn it off.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:07 (four years ago) link

Substitute 'classical' for 'noise and techno' and we're on the same wavelength.

pomenitul, Monday, 14 October 2019 16:08 (four years ago) link

La Ritournelle is lovely though

frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:09 (four years ago) link

oh god yeah i do know this BSS song... Or is it because it reminds me of something else?

I don't know a lot of these. I was into Broken Social Scene but have never heard of this song.

this tells me that you have not heard the only great BSS album

Simon H., Monday, 14 October 2019 16:15 (four years ago) link

I’m loving the rollout so far but feel like my favorite songs of the decade will all be in the bottom 50 if they appear at all.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:18 (four years ago) link

None of mine have showed up so far but I'm sure that's because everyone else has voted correctly and my votes will all show up in the top 50

so so same. first of my list to place I think.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:23 (four years ago) link

The only two songs I hadn’t head before is Overload and Pow. I did not expect the Sugababes one to sound like this, reminds me of Beck. I like this.

I don’t know about Lethal Bizzle, I never quite got into grime and I’m definitely not starting in my mid 30’s.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:26 (four years ago) link

Kinda worried that hip-hop is gonna get the shaft in this here poll (bluntly titled track #100 aside)

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:30 (four years ago) link

Of course not. UGK, Clipse, Outkast, Kanye, T.I., Nas, Jay Z and even Eminem have a chance of making it over Dead Prez.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:33 (four years ago) link

Love a lot of the other big Grime staples but 'Pow' never did it for me compared to numerous Ruff Sqwad and Rolldeep and co. efforts plus hits like More Fire Crew's 'Oi'.

nashwan, Monday, 14 October 2019 16:33 (four years ago) link

Sausage rolls are a waste of sausage imho.

Go to the ginger pig and say that.

gyac, Monday, 14 October 2019 16:36 (four years ago) link

I'll keep that in mind.

pomenitul, Monday, 14 October 2019 16:39 (four years ago) link

It only took 13 years but I finally listened to the Johnny Boy track with the funny title. It's pretty good!

honestly had similar reaction. i thought he was precious bullshit when i was 19, can't really understand how anyone could like that dreck.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Monday, 14 October 2019 16:55 (four years ago) link

I liked a lot of precious bullshit music in the 2000s but never bothered with Sufjan

frame casual (dog latin), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:00 (four years ago) link

Sufjan is definitely precious bullshit, but he's precious bullshit with good melodies and fun arrangements

icy bike chain rain (zchyrs), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:03 (four years ago) link

2010s Sufjan >>>> 2000s Sufjan

Dan Worsley, Monday, 14 October 2019 17:13 (four years ago) link

I didn’t care for the Sufjan tracks that got nominated and I find the song Chicago slightly obnoxious - safe from the verses. The album itself is also disappointingly his more celebrated one from the 00’s when Seven Swans is where it’s at.

I would’ve easily voted for songs like: “for the widows in paradise...”, “all the trees in the field...”, “the dress looks nice on you”, “to be alone with you”, “in the devil’s territory”, “sister” or “a good man is hard to find”.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:19 (four years ago) link

I loved Broken Social Scene but never really saw 'Anthems...' as a standout track, I mean I get why people like it (I think) but it just doesn't do much for me. In the end I voted for two tracks involving BSS members but nothing actually by them - '7/4 (Shoreline)' nearly made the cut.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 14 October 2019 17:19 (four years ago) link

7/4 shoreline is still my fav BSS song too.

i voted for sufjan in the albums poll, but not for illinoise

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:25 (four years ago) link

"Chicago" is a slog tbh

Simon H., Monday, 14 October 2019 17:33 (four years ago) link

I’m the opposite on “Anthems...”, on first listens I thought the album was good for the variety of styles in it - although the production could’ve been way better - but the only song I found beautiful was Anthems.

7/4 shoreline is amazing too I concur. But, my favorite song on that album is Superconnected. 7/4 is close behind.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:42 (four years ago) link

"Emily" also my first vote to place, I also voted it #3 though could've been my #1.

Woo! Joanna Newsom is one of those artists where I wish I had nominated some tracks because Sawdust & Dianonds and Bridges and Balloons would've gotten my votes over this, but I ended up voting for this instead, lovely track.

This too, though my POO from Ys is "Only Skin."

HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:48 (four years ago) link

Sheesh some hot takes about Sufjan Stevens in here

Van Horn Street, Monday, 14 October 2019 17:53 (four years ago) link

I made a series of mixes themed around the Chinese zodiac and in every one used a bit of Sufjan Stevens' Enjoy Your Rabbit, so he's now the most used artist in my mixes though I never really listen to him.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:56 (four years ago) link

I can see "Anthems.." being the consensus pick - given the competition it's a huge feat it's even here! "Lover's spit" would be my second, but YFIIP has at least four or five anthemic songs tbh. Great record that I had to cut from my album ballot

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 14 October 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link

lover's spit is a grand and beautiful power ballad completely undercut by the lyrics

flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 October 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

Personally, I love the pettiness and vulgarity of Lover's Spit and how it interacts with the other aspects of the song.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:02 (four years ago) link

Disagree! The juxtaposition of the grand and beautiful waltz with the nasty lyrics makes it for me imo. xp

What does this mean?

I've never heard of Johnny Boy before but I kind of love this song.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Monday, 14 October 2019 18:10 (four years ago) link

So happy to see La Ritournelle make it. It was in my top five. When I was travelling in New Zealand and Australia in 2008, I bought an iPod just before I left but didn't get it ready in time. A month in, my mum sent it to me when it was fully loaded. My brother (who posts on here too) helped fill it up with my music and some things he thought I'd enjoy (still remember the first time Arnold Schwarzenegger by Wesley Willis popped up on shuffle!). La Ritournelle was one of the songs he put on there and I fell in love with it instantly. I listened to it over and over as it sound-tracked by time in Australia where I met my wife. When I listen to it now, it takes me right back to that wonderful time. It's such a magical song and the climax with the strings leading into the brief appearance of his vocals is one of my favourite moments in music ever. It's a shame he's so underrated beyond this one song. I gave his album Sexuality a lot of points too.

Love that Johnny Boy single too. I was disappointed that nothing on their album came close to it.

kitchen person, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:11 (four years ago) link

I've never heard of Johnny Boy and I can't work out what kind of music "You Are the Generation That Bought More Shoes and You Get What You Deserve" could be while also being acceptable to ILM. Gonna preserve the mystery for a bit but will check it out when I get home later.
