this is the only song by this band I know but it can't deny it rules ass.

the greatest band of all time

The Middle definitely was on my list. Its corny as hell but I love it.
Thanks to the many poll runners btw, you are doing an amazing job.

I did not vote for Jimmy Eat World on the tracks list because I voted for it on the albums list. Plus which, the best song on the album ("A Praise Chorus") was not nominated.

i’m losing my mind just a little

I like Jimmy Eat World plenty, but this song wore out from overplay for me, so I didn't vote for it in the end. It's still great though.

I loved the theory cooked up a year or two ago (on Twitter) that this was actually a bisexual realization anthem. Even if it wasn't intentional, it fits like a glove.

this is like how the internet is convinced that "mr. brightside" is extremely bisexual. pretty into this form of critical overreach

Also I still remember Pow coming on at the first rave I ever went to, when I was about 16/17. I didnt really get what was going on, people didnt really seem to be enjoying themselves, the DJ was just playing a bland mix of house and the last knocking of garage, losing attention and then POW! Everyone went fucking mental. It was beautiful
― a hoy hoy, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link
Didn't it have something to do with Rufus Wainwright, or am I conflating theories? Anyway, I like that reading of The Middle.
Another one coming up shortly.

i never knew "The Middle" was by Jimmy Eat World until today, but have heard it in many places and situations and have always been very into it. it actually makes me weirdly wistful.

90-81 way more boring than 101-91... I hope the indie batch of the poll is over now.

my number one. does something to my soul. don't really have the words for it
― devvvine, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:40 (four years ago) link
for the most part, i'm with Tuomas. i entered the decade as an indie kid who came to that scene through SY and punk, and by 2004, i was bored and went full noise dude and techno head.

Yasss Lloyd <3
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link
Hmm, this latest song actually has a pretty sweet string arrangement, but it's ruined by the "cool", impassive & laconic singing. Why can't indie kids have emotions?
― Tuomas, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

I shouldn't really rise to this, but as someone whose ballot is like 90% unimpassive indie, I can't deal with it. It shouldn't really need to be said, but the indie in this poll so far does not even slightly represent the breadth of indie.

Camera Obscura's 'My Maudlin Career' is one of the best songs ever, but I'm guessing it won't show up.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:50 (four years ago) link
We're talking about 'indie' as if it still were 2003 though right?
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:51 (four years ago) link
As someone whose ballot was pop/hip hop/and 0% indie, I think that this is such a boring discussion and we don’t actually need 200 replies crying about indie > hoping for one of my faves to make an appearance so I can talk about it
― gyac, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:51 (four years ago) link
Lloyd is not impassive.
― Van Horn Street, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:51 (four years ago) link
Tbf 2003 is a year polled here, but it increasingly weirds me out reading such singular statements on "indie", in 2019.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:52 (four years ago) link
Or, more succinct: Gyac otm.
yeah I genuinely like the Camera Obscura track but there's so much more to indie than what often breaks the surface in these polls. but as I said, all carping is welcome, as is all counter-carping
― imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link

― je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 14 October 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link
lol the vocals on this song are nowhere near impassive
― omar little, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:54 (four years ago) link
This is the first track so far that I voted for. It's really good.
I don't know why anybody would expect the 100-80 portion of this poll to represent 'the breadth of indie'. It's just 20 songs, many of which are not indie.
― justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Monday, 14 October 2019 20:56 (four years ago) link
Voted only for “Pow” in this stretch. Was good to hear it again.
― Jeff W, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link
exactly. it can't represent the breadth of any genre. i do understand the grumbling from non-indieheads a little as it has predominated so far but hey huge spoiler here there will be stretches where it doesn't
― imago, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link
Those hoping that there won’t be more indie on the list better have stuffed the ballot box lol
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 October 2019 20:58 (four years ago) link
so far today, even
I loved the woman's face throughout the Camera Obscura video
― tangenttangent, Monday, 14 October 2019 20:59 (four years ago) link
otm. there hasn't been one indie song yet which i liked. and my ballot was quite indie lopsided too.
Same here, though I do like the Camera Obscura (which I shortlisted).
Maybe Tuomas called the singing on "Lloyd" impassive because he watched the video?
― HELLA FITZGERALD (Leee), Monday, 14 October 2019 20:59 (four years ago) link
I found the experience of actually picking the songs enormously nostalgic - it’s a time in my life that spans a lot of my major life experiences and a lot of the songs I picked have deep meaning to me or are entwined with specific memories in a way that later stuff just isn’t. It reminded me of when I was moving to the UK and when I finished my leaving cert(!) and when I was depressed and on the verge of dropping out of university and of a mix SV made me and of a million other experiences in between. I’ve really enjoyed remembering and listening to all these songs all over again, including some I haven’t listened to in at least a decade. Tl; dr thank you for doing this!

I’m probably the only person who thinks this, but the best Camera Obscura song is “Away With Murder”
― flopsy bird (voodoo chili), Monday, 14 October 2019 21:01 (four years ago) link
Didn't one of the girls in Camera Obscura die? I always feel weird listening to stuff made in the (reasonably) present day made by people who aren't alive anymore.
I voted for the Exploding Hearts album, though, so I'm an enigma.
