New Order finally knocked off the top of the ilxor charts

That's got nothing to do with MJ; it's just because I deleted my account :)

Can someone explain why New Order is always at the top of the ILX list?

Mordy, Monday, 29 June 2009 22:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Because, despite those last two albums, they absolutely fucking rule?

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:24 (fourteen years ago) link

ilx is indie + old.

the shock will be coupled with the need to dance (jim), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:27 (fourteen years ago) link

In all seriousness, that's exactly it: if there's one band to which a sizeable core of ILX0rs is going to return again and again, it doesn't surprise me at all that New Order are it.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:30 (fourteen years ago) link

but the ilx indie have to pretend they dance rather than rock
xp

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:31 (fourteen years ago) link

otherwise they be "corny"

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:31 (fourteen years ago) link

weekly charts are not immensely informative; 80 play counts for one artist = 8 out of 679 people listened to the same album last week

winston, Monday, 29 June 2009 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

by =, i mean "roughly equivalent to"

winston, Monday, 29 June 2009 22:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeh, exactly: it's a tiny sample and the results are pretty much meaningless.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:52 (fourteen years ago) link

80 play counts for an artist means 80 individuals listened to at least 1 track by that artist

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, does it? <Thinks> Fuck it, still not exactly earth-shattering.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Monday, 29 June 2009 22:57 (fourteen years ago) link

xp ah i see

winston, Monday, 29 June 2009 23:00 (fourteen years ago) link

and album plays means each individual played 1 track from that album

grimly get a new account

Ach, it just doesn't like iPods very much. And iPhones seem to be a source of endless confusion for it.

lastfm does not like manually managed ipods

I haven't had too much trouble with scrobbling from my ipod. It occasionally claims there are no scrobbles, but it just picks them up the next time I plug it in. Never had any doubles of anything.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 09:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeh, that's the weird thing: it seems to affect a random selection of people using a wide range of systems; the fact there've been people whacking on about it on the Last.fm forums since October 2008 (at least) yet they've not had any proper acknowledgement, let alone help, was a major factor in making me think: "Fuck this."

I could have just about lived with double scrobbling if I'd been able to remove the duplicate tracks: delete one, though, and they both go. That's what led me to think it had to be something at the server end rather than my end; once again, all roads led to "fuck this".

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 09:29 (fourteen years ago) link

^^ditto. if even i can manage it...

(xp!)

sometimes it looks like it's scrobbling doubles, but this is only when i've listened to a song twice separately in between ipod syncs - it'll scrobble them at the same time.

how are you scrobbling your iPod? I have a manually managed iPod and I use iSproggler, a third-party app, and it works well.

master of karate and friendship for everyone (musically), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 14:44 (fourteen years ago) link

his answer badly

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 30 June 2009 14:45 (fourteen years ago) link

how are you scrobbling your iPod?

I was using iScrobbler on OS X but it had a couple of irritating and persistent flaws that made me think, sod it, I'll try the new version of the official Last.fm app (I'd given up on that heap of shit after about two seconds when I signed up at the end of 2006). And it was still bollocks: painfully so, in fact.

But let's get things into perspective here. I shitcanned Last.fm not just because scrobbling from my phone was a needlessly fiddly and unreliable affair but also because:

* Their customer service is woeful: flat-out ignoring users who complain simply because they're a small minority, which seems to be what they're doing, is tantamount to waving a big flag saying "FUCK YOU" in my book. (eMusic are even more guilty of this, but I find them much more useful so I'm willing to grin and bear it ... for now.)

* Since Spotify came along, I'd stopped using the radio side of things and was really just using Last.fm as a glorified way of a) being anal about my listening and b) very occasionally sparking a music-related chat, either on Last.fm itself or on Facebook. If I'm missing anything, it's the former: but when I ask myself why I wanted to know exactly when I last listened to On Me Not In Me, or how many times I'd played Second Class War, I can't really give myself a reasonable answer. As for the latter: there are myriad other, better ways to go about that ... this place being a fine one.

* Call me paranoid, but see this whole founders-leaving, did-they-or-didn't-they-leak-to-the-RIAA, CBS-related bullshit? I'm not such a fan of that. I accept that their response to it all was reasonably sound, and TechCrunch looked like total bell-ends, but the shadow of The Man looms ever so slightly larger than I'd like now. (The same goes for Spotify, right enough, but ... well, like eMusic, it's just much more useful.)

* Ultimately, scrobbling to Last.fm had become a pointless habit for me, and when the double-scrobbling thing happened and it became obvious nobody at their end gave an iota of a shit, calling it a day seemed the obvious thing to do.

I can't fucking believe I just wrote all that. Why the hell am I justifying something that should merit a 0 on any properly calibrated care-o-meter? Anyway, there you go.

But we both know you will sign up again within a month as spotify scrobbles and you will miss it even for the very discussions you mentioned...
