The new Killswitch is only okay, in my opinion. They're good at what they do, but the new record isn't anything extraordinary. When it comes to recent melodeath/metalcore, All That Remains have trounced KsE with their last two albums, in my opinion.

As I said in Alternative Press (and on my blog, it's a holding action. I've never been a fan, but existing fans will like it just fine.
― unperson, Monday, 29 June 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link
It seems like at this point that they've settled into a comfortable groove of putting out totally solid but safe records.

Okay, I listened to the new Moss disc this morning for an AMG review, and while the first three tracks are typical Moss, the fourth track won me over - Discharge's "Maimed and Slaughtered" stretched from 65 seconds to six minutes. Hilariously awesome.

I ordered the new Woburn House cd from Paradigm Recordings yesterday. Hadn't realised that I hadn't heard much of the last years output by the label.

I was swithering about that, because I wasn't all that bothered about the first one.
Hit me up if you want to try any of last year's releases. (Is it just Bosnia I sent you?)

Anyway, I'm really digging the new 3 Inches of Blood. Endino really plays up the old school metal, the album's really rough around the edges, which is cool ("All of Them Witches" is an awesome song title). And the more Cam Pipes goes on, the more he's starting to sound like Udo Dirkschneider...he's got quite the plegm vibrato going on this record, which is quite surreal at times.
― A. Begrand, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 22:55 (fifteen years ago) link
"All of Them Witches" = Rosemary's Baby?
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 1 July 2009 06:25 (fifteen years ago) link
So--at the YOB show in SF, Will Haven was main support. It was Grady's first show back as lead singer (not sure how often this is happening). They were STAGGERINGLY good. So fucking heavy and powerful. Everyone should listen to "Saga" off Carpe Diem right now.
― Nate Carson, Wednesday, 1 July 2009 06:26 (fifteen years ago) link
"all of them witches" was a song on the stark naked album in 1971... this isn't a cover, is it?

Nope, not a cover. That track does sound cool, though (listening now).

Pentagram had one of the biggest shows Satyricon has ever hosted last night. Way over capacity. Total madness. Bobby Liebling looks like something out the Dark Crystal. Fun time.

Downloading the new 3IOB now and it's taking for-fucking-ever. I know they're sending me CD-quality audio cause it's already at 470MB...how fucking long is this album?
― unperson, Thursday, 2 July 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago) link
Haha, yeah, it took me six hours to get the 3IOB on light DSL. Great quality mp3s, though, and a very fun album.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 2 July 2009 23:44 (fifteen years ago) link
It's finally finished. I'm reviewing it for AP, along with the new Shadows Fall. Hope that one's better than...oh, anything else they've ever done.
― unperson, Thursday, 2 July 2009 23:48 (fifteen years ago) link
I always like 3IOB, but they're really turning a corner here, the screams are only sporadic, the metal a little truer, so to speak.
Meanwhile, over at Hellbound, my decidedly YOBerrific feature is up:

Nice piece Adrien. I think this new YOB is my album of the year at this point. I wish they would come eastward on tour, but I am getting a Bloody Panda/Ocean double bill next month so I shouldn't complain too much.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 3 July 2009 01:47 (fifteen years ago) link
We are in discussions with Planet Caravan fest in Asheville for Sept 18-19 for possible YOB fly-out. Nothing confirmed yet but there is hope...
Yes--Bobby brought his teeth!

I'm gonna be in NYC then, unfortunately. Any chance of a New England tour date?

man, the new coalesce is gooooooooooooood.
never liked the vox too much, but like w/meshuggah, I can forgive the angry dude yelling at me in an intense way because the music is so head nodding and SICKK.

and imo, the ~*most beautiful*~ metal ever is "the secret of the secret" off of this:

which reminds me, I never really listened to the last esoteric album much at all. I should really do that!
it's just weird because subconscious dissolution was probably my most anticipated metal record the year that it came out. (whatever year that was...) and it was really good too. just never got around to the last one!
― original bgm, Friday, 3 July 2009 02:44 (fifteen years ago) link
gonna check out this 3rd and the mortal record too. never heard of that. sounds like it might be up my alley.
I like the lyrical themes for the band on metal-archives:
Natural Beauty, Sadness

A contender for "most beautiful metal" that still doesn't pull its punches:

New Dysrhythmia is very good.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 5 July 2009 12:13 (fifteen years ago) link
Since when did Job For a Cowboy get good??? The new album is shockingly enjoyable, not to mention some pretty catchy death metal. No 'core' in sight on this record.
And the new Behemoth (leaked last night) is ace.
― A. Begrand, Sunday, 5 July 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago) link
Haven't listened to the new Behemoth front to back yet, but the one song I've had time to check out sounds like a very good Behemoth song, something I can always use more of. And yeah, JFAC have been good for a while. They recorded this one with their live drummer, who's a big improvement over the guy on their last record. The new Born of Osiris is out there too, and I'm enjoying that one quite a bit - it's weirder than their first EP, but not in a trying-to-be-Cephalic-Carnage way or anything; they're just imaginative Sumerian-core. I really like that label's output. Between them and Willowtip, the underground is in really good shape right now.

Dysrhythmia co-signed.
