read about this in bandcamp's monthly experimental roundup--secret drum band's chuva

https://secretdrumband.bandcamp.com/album/chuva

heavy heavy intricate drums with synth warblings and mantra-like vocals. pretty mesmerizing.

I've been financially unable to continue the "buy people music by Black artists on Bandcamp Day" effort--but a very cool music publication Hullaballoo has picked up the baton last month, and again this month:

hey team (tommy here) we're doin it again - quote rt today with a bandcamp link to a digital album by a black artist you've got your eye on, and we'll pick it up for you! all money goes direct to artists and labels on bandcamp today. we'll pick up the tab on the first 40 qrts! pic.twitter.com/An31cVMvwA

— HULLABALOO (@hullytweets) September 4, 2020

They're approaching it a little differently--you retweet sharing the album you want, and they'll buy it for you. Help spread the word about artists, get free music, get artists paid--win, win, win!

Ah, that's great that somebody's taken up the mantle, you did brilliant work. Sorry that you've not been able to continue, hope the situation isn't too bad for you.

three weeks pass...

This album by Bully called Sugaregg is decent enough pop-punk w/ a touch of twee and shoegaze and Nirvana. I like singer Alicia’s voice.

It’s in Bandcamp’s best of summer 2020 Story

I'm not gonna spam this all over ILM, I'm just gonna put it here, this one time, because it fits within the purview of the thread. I've started a label - Burning Ambulance Music - and while our first full releases won't be out until early 2021, I'm launching with a compilation that features exclusive tracks from a bunch of amazing (and amazingly generous) artists:

Mats Gustafsson, Ivo Perelman and Nate Wooley, Matthew Shipp and Whit Dickey, Melvin Gibbs, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, Aaron Parks, Melissa Aldana, Dead Neanderthals, Dog Life (feat. Anna Högberg), William Hooker, Jason Kao Hwang, Eric Hofbauer and Garrison Fewell, Matthew Golombisky, and Nick Millevoi.

It's called Eyes Shut, Ears Open, and you can buy it here for $10 (official release date is Friday).

25% of the money will go to the Jazz Foundation of America's Musicians' Emergency Fund, which (as one might expect) helps out jazz musicians who need financial, medical, and housing assistance. The rest will go toward making records.

As shitty a year (shittiest in my 40 years) as this has been, music has been incredible. Here's a thread of my 40 or so favorite releases of the year, with Bandcamp links to each:

Oct. 2 is @Bandcamp Friday again, all $ to artists! BUY MUSIC, it's so crucial in 2020.

In this thread are Musicophilia's favorite releases of 2020 so far, and some recent mixes of amazing music by Black artists you should most definitely support! pic.twitter.com/sFQ2r6bLce

a little off topic, but supposedly the app can stream to chromecast now? has anyone been able to do this and if so, how? i am pretty tech savvy but there does not appear to be an option anywhere in the app. on iphone if that makes a difference

The spotlight track from my compilation was added to the New York Times' weekly playlist!

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/02/arts/music/playlist-maren-morris-halsey-21-savage.html

I'm as astonished by that as I am by the fact that all these incredible musicians were willing to donate music in the first place. This is a very head-spinning day.

i recommended this on the rolling jangle thread, but you can actually buy it now:

xp that Glass album is great, thanks. Yep, total This Heat bait, but somehow not derivative, I get like vibes of The Ex and Dog Faced Hermans as well.

Sounds really good, Noel!

First track is very much my bag, bubbling and spacy - will listen properly to the whole thing tomorrow when I'm not trying to round up a few more bandcamp purchases and go to bed before 1am (oops, that was 15 minutes ago).

(aagh, I've already spent more money than I told myself I should and I haven't even checked my ever-growing wishlist yet. better go to bed...)

Debuting in 1988 as a self-released 8xCassette boxset. Chapter Eleven collects the solo recordings (1976 - 1987) from one of the earliest members of the US Industrial Noise scene, coalescing a wide swath of influences and culling experimental techniques into inventive new terrain. Carefully remastered from the original tapes, this deluxe reissue is a long-awaited rescue from obscurity.

I don't know if it's necessarily "awesome," but I do think it has a melancholic beauty to it--I put an album of improvised multi-layered acoustic music (and experimental electronic reconstructions of same) that I did when I was 20 up on Bandcamp. The more important thing is any money folks pay for it is being doubled and donated to bail funds, mutual aid funds, and social justice and civil rights funds:

Thank you, everyone who has picked up my album at Bandcamp--just donated $450 from $225 in album purchases! I'll continue to donate whatever folks pay, and double it--pass it on!https://t.co/xY4zZ2L7fH

Robert Turman's Flux got a lot of attention when it was reissued in the 2010ish period. I know it came out on Spectrum Spools eventually but I remember a separate reissue in the years beforehand doing the rounds on Volcanic Tongue etc

The below is from an artist on Sote's label promoting Iranian composers, on which she does some kind of incantation over genuinely innovative sounding electronics. Hard to classify! Instantly wishlisted.

One last Bandcamp Friday for this cursed year--so doing the "buy people music on Bandcamp Friday" thing one last time. Had a few ILM participants during earlier Bandcamp Fridays this year--don't be shy!

On Friday, Dec. 4th, 100% of sales at @Bandcamp go to artists/labels!

Retweet w/ a link to a Black artist's music you love on Bandcamp, and we'll buy you an album of your choice by any independent Black artist/group.
