reminds me of when i saw moodymann. "the bar is still open, people!" then, more ominously: "THE BAR IS STILL OPEN."

Everybody needs to listen to that 7" he did as Wavelength. It really is some of his best stuff. Both tracks can be heard here:

he should do a record with amp fiddler.
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 23 July 2009 14:51 (fifteen years ago) link
though i think hes way better than amp.
better how? he is not a better singer or songwriter than amp fiddler, that's for sure. i don't really see how you can compare them at all. i guess it isn't very cool to like Amp Fiddler, maybe that's it.
― pipecock, Thursday, 23 July 2009 16:59 (fifteen years ago) link
way better name, which is key

"Let's Take Off" is a tremendous mix starter. And can we talk about the swagger-inducing "Hood Pass Intact"? That one most definitely makes you want to walk with a mean limp.
― myndbloom, Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:15 (fifteen years ago) link
you think so? i think Dam-Funk's name is a weak point for sure, when i try to tell people about him they always give the "Dame Funk?!?!?!"....
― pipecock, Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:16 (fifteen years ago) link
all these guys have bad names.
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link
having funk in your name = generally bad idea for modern artists
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago) link
you're right. Amp Fiddler is better.when you're making music that sounds like it's from 1982, I think it's appropriate.
― hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link
it looks cooler than it sounds, i'll give you that.
i always hoped for more masturbatory puns from amp fiddler.
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 23 July 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago) link
i'm with pipecock on this...Amp Fiddler is light years ahead of that DF is doing...and while i really like it, i have yet to be anywhere near as blown away as I have been with Amp's material. and let's not even talk about live...

i want to know more about how dam funk produces his stuff... he said in an interview somewhere that it was without the use of sequencers. how's that possible? unless he means, like, sequencing programs like logic or ableton, the synth arpeggios and drum patterns must be sequenced... no?
― pshrbrn, Friday, 24 July 2009 07:11 (fifteen years ago) link
theres no way he doesnt use sequencers. the stuff i heard sounded like some old p funk sessioner playing over madlib beats. maybe he meant for the synths or something.
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 24 July 2009 10:01 (fifteen years ago) link
Perhaps what he means is that he programmes the drum machine to play the beats (true, that is a sequencer of sorts, but an external sequencer is what most people think of by the term 'sequencer'). He then plays in free time over the top, recording successive passes to multitrack tape (or maybe a digital recorder acting as a multitrack). That would be exactly what most people did in the early '80s.
― dubmill, Friday, 24 July 2009 10:49 (fifteen years ago) link
My guess is that he uses old hardware and plays the keys by hand into whatever he uses to record.
A lot of older synths use a +5volt trigger to step their arpeggiator. This allows you to play arps by hand and still have the arpeggiator locked to the drum machine. He is definitely using a drum machine, you can't get that stiff jitter that his drums have by hand.
Washing Machine by Mr. Fingers is a classic example of this. Its a Juno 60 being played by hand and the arp is being fired by a 707 trig out.
― your original display name is still visible (Display Name), Friday, 24 July 2009 10:50 (fifteen years ago) link
what i do is just play something once into Logic, then select that little bit and keep copying and pasting it as many times as i want, pretty easy and way easier than messing around with old weird apreggiators and shit, i can't never figure out old keyboard at all.
― tulsa anti-juggalo league (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 24 July 2009 16:10 (fifteen years ago) link
apparently there's this program called ableton that does that all for you now. you don't even have to play anything, just click "make beat" and voila.
― damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Friday, 24 July 2009 16:45 (fifteen years ago) link
that sounds pretty cool.
i don't know much besides logic cuz that's what i've messed around with

there are some songs that i wish sounded more like whiney g-funk and less like complex chromeo beats, but hey i love chromeo all the same so it's no biggie

i have not yet gotten to the 9 min song called "searchin' 4 funk's future" just yet - i'm excited about that
was able to get a copy of Invite the Light for $20. would call it a steal but it looks like most copies are similarly priced. its such a good album too, kind of like his own Songs in the Key of Life in how it stretches his sound to every corner he can take it. packaging is super cool too, ultra shiny, almost like a hologram. all three records are white with different color labels. actually kind of sucks that so many copies are out there, suggests this was a gamble that didn't work. doesn't mean you have to miss out though
