Moonlight Mile reminds me of Van Morrison and nothing else, but I think that's more Van imitating Moonlight Mile than the other way around?

Lily Dale, Sunday, 7 March 2021 04:30 (three years ago) link

I just found myself comparing the drums on MM and may this be love.

candyman, Sunday, 7 March 2021 05:30 (three years ago) link

Lord what was I thinking, they’re completely different songs with only one thing in common, should not be mentioned in the same sentence. I must have caused such chaos in the universe!!!

brimstead, Sunday, 7 March 2021 07:35 (three years ago) link

You sound unhappy. Calm down. It is just a comparison. You will come across this many times in life.

Really though, play the two next to each other and they actually flow well together. That is all.

candyman, Sunday, 7 March 2021 08:25 (three years ago) link

yep, they’d definitely fit nicely next to each other on a playlist. and you could throw “may this be love” on there too

little johnny juul (voodoo chili), Sunday, 7 March 2021 14:01 (three years ago) link

seriously you guys should check out this new outtake set. i bumped a different rs thread but no traction. https://iorr.org/talk/read.php?2,2805669

Thus Sang Freud, Sunday, 7 March 2021 14:37 (three years ago) link

I don’t love putting songs that are that close together on mixtapes but it’s cool, kumbaya

brimstead, Sunday, 7 March 2021 17:07 (three years ago) link

xpost Have been digging through those outtakes. A reall treat though I don’t all of them are Stones trax ( Jagger solo maybe on some?) and my ears tell me some of the vocals seem ... new-ish on lots of them.

Moonlight Mile reminds me of Van Morrison

I feel this. Another one that gives me heavy Van vibes is “Till the Next Goodbye” on IORAR

Washington Generals D-League affiliate (will), Monday, 8 March 2021 00:48 (three years ago) link

I need sticky fingers glue. For craft-y stones fans.

candyman, Monday, 8 March 2021 01:14 (three years ago) link

The other thing "Moonlight Mile" reminds me of, that is not a song at all, is the passage from As I Lay Dying that begins, "In a strange room you must empty yourself for sleep" and ends, "How often have I lain beneath rain on a strange roof, thinking of home."

Lily Dale, Monday, 8 March 2021 01:35 (three years ago) link

imagining van doing moonlight mile on it's too late to stop now, that would have been unreal

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 8 March 2021 02:12 (three years ago) link

Van Morrison's "Moonlight Mile" is "Almost Independence Day".

Halfway there but for you, Monday, 8 March 2021 03:48 (three years ago) link

That was what I was thinking of.

I'm imagining Astral Weeks-style mystical Van mode:

"I'm riding down your moonlight mile, your moonlight mile . . . I'm just about a moonlight mile . . . in your radio . . ."

five months pass...

I've been listening to lots of Stones this week in the wake of Charlie Watts' passing, and today--after many years of listening to "Sway"--I have learned that it's "that demon life has got you in its sway," not "that mean old life forgot you in its sway." "Demon life" goes way harder

moonlight mile
can't you hear me knocking
wild horses
dead flowers
sister morphine
sway
i got the blues
bitch
you got to move
brown sugar

professional anti- (Karl Malone), Friday, 27 August 2021 21:54 (two years ago) link

for some reason, just before watts died i was having a moment with Between the Buttons. many moments, like on repeat for days and days. i like the usual big 4 stones albums (beggar's through exile), but i no longer think those are their best. sticky fingers seems so SLOW now!

professional anti- (Karl Malone), Friday, 27 August 2021 21:55 (two years ago) link

not trying to set up a strawman or talk shit on sticky fingers or anything -- i'm pretty sure those are the the consensus "big 4" with the stones, right, and their 1966/67 stuff fucking rules!

i think my favorite stones era is still 1968 though, holy moley

You ranked Sugar LAST?

calstars, Friday, 27 August 2021 21:59 (two years ago) link

Recently come to the conclusion that as 'obscene' as the lyrics are in "Brown Sugar", they're beaten in the obscenity sweepstakes by the beat under the verses and especially the sax solo.

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:00 (two years ago) link

The sax solo itself, I mean, as the verse beat plays under it too.

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:02 (two years ago) link

"Sway"
"Dead Flowers"
"Moonlight Mile"
"Can't You Hear Me Knocking" (first 2-3 minutes; the part they use in Casino)

"Wild Horses"
"You Got to Move"
"Brown Sugar" (low ranking not a statement; just tired of it)
"I Got the Blues"

"Can't You Hear Me Knocking" (rest of the song)
"Sister Morphine"
"Bitch"

clemenza, Friday, 27 August 2021 22:03 (two years ago) link

i always thought it was “demon wine” that got you in its sway, but then again i've always been bad at deciphering lyrics

grove street (party) direction (voodoo chili), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:04 (two years ago) link

ha! i didn't mean to put it last i guess! i was going through in order and putting them in tiers, and thought "let's put this near the bottom" and forgot to revisit

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in a market down in New Orleans
Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright
Hear him whip the women just around midnight
Brown sugar
How come you taste so good?
Brown sugar
Just like a young girl should

well, i guess it was...1971...

professional anti- (Karl Malone), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:09 (two years ago) link

there are a lot of songs featuring horny white men singing about having sex with people of color around that time, but that one seems especially tone deaf, and it also points to a kind of songwriting style for them (the kind that is most frequently played on the radio, like start me up) that is not my favorite

Peak Jagger, singing live to a backing track on TOTP

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:16 (two years ago) link

why do they still sing that song?

professional anti- (Karl Malone), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:20 (two years ago) link

i'm not trying to me too the rolling stones, it's just like woooooooow at that one though. the very least they could do is stop playing it in the year 2021.

professional anti- (Karl Malone), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:20 (two years ago) link

They still do it, but Jagger 'forgets' to sing the nastier parts.

Precious, Grace, Hill & Beard LTD. (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:23 (two years ago) link

but every verse is like that! and every chorus is like that! lol

professional anti- (Karl Malone), Friday, 27 August 2021 22:23 (two years ago) link

let's see, which part should we excise here from verse 2

Drums beating, cold English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' when it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard 'em just around midnight

uh

how about verse 3

Ah, and I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen
I'm no schoolboy, but I know what I like
You shoulda heard me just around midnight

oh
