Top artists include: Enter Shikari , Oasis , and Arctic Monkeys ... see all

theres a lot more chav tags than that one as you will see if you click it, but i thought the lex would like chav rock

I have mentioned on a previous thread that my top neighbour used to be a guy who goes by the handle greysunken cunt, someone pointed out this is from Ulysses. Anyway he is no longer my top neighbour but he's in my friends, I saw him listening to Gilberto Gil e Jorge Ben so I thought I'd go and have a look at his profile see what other cool shit he's listening to and how close our compatibility was and I found from his page this wiki page he had created, which I found rather funny: http://www.last.fm/music/Alan+Shearer/+wiki?ver=1

two weeks pass...

why do people tag songs with the name of the artist? seems utterly pointless to me

who makes the nachos? (braveclub), Thursday, 13 August 2009 09:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Why do people tag at all? Is it to make a playlist or something? Seems utterly pointless to me.

I've not found how or where, but can you tag your songs in iTunes, and if so, will last.fm recognize that tag? I could see use in that, but otherwise, I just don't get the tagging I guess.

young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 13 August 2009 09:41 (fourteen years ago) link

You can search for stuff by tags.

tag radio

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 13 August 2009 13:59 (fourteen years ago) link

But does last.fm recognize tags (or grouping) done in iTunes?

young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 13 August 2009 16:49 (fourteen years ago) link

tagging on last fm is for tag radio and the like. It's nothing to do with ID tagging.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 13 August 2009 16:55 (fourteen years ago) link

it's handy insofar as that it's a great way to search artists. i used it a lot for finding artists from a certain year, since lastfm doesn't really organize information chronologically (although i've since discovered rateyourmusic is much better for that). the problem is of course, everyone is responsible for tagging their own stuff, and as far as i can tell it isn't policed or moderated at all, so you end up with erroneous tags and whatnot.

borntohula, Thursday, 13 August 2009 17:33 (fourteen years ago) link

the biggest pissoff for me is the tag "bands i've seen live".... WHO CARES?!?!

borntohula, Thursday, 13 August 2009 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link

a year or two ago I tagged the ILX decade polls; if you have a paid account i'm pretty sure you can listen to one person's specific tags:

http://www.last.fm/user/groupy/library/tags?tag=ilx+60s+poll&view=cloud
http://www.last.fm/user/groupy/library/tags?tag=ilx+70s+poll&view=cloud
http://www.last.fm/user/groupy/library/tags?tag=ilx+80s+poll&view=cloud

the tagging was tedious but it was a handy way to create a "station" that streamed the top 100 or so.

musically, Thursday, 13 August 2009 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

lots of tags are for personal reference, I had an "albums i've heard" tag, useful to no one but me.

musically, Thursday, 13 August 2009 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

wow i just passed 40,000 plays. the weird thing is my top artist apparently makes up less than 2% of my listening. Somehow I feel that's contributing to the world's ills.

Dominique, Thursday, 13 August 2009 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Musically: thanks! Now there are tags I can rely on! :-)

young depardieu looming out of void in hour of profound triumph (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 13 August 2009 18:13 (fourteen years ago) link

i just realised some tags have their own special page now, eg http://www.last.fm/tag/queer

RONG! You're listening to Arthur Russell at this very moment! Should be at least Medium with me.

i put down steely dan and fever ray as fave artists and then realise i have neither on my laptop. i was going thru albums i havent heard fully yet. so i stuck the arctic monkeys 2nd one on. i dunno i kinda like the guys lyrics but they get boring after a while, no? so arthur russell came on after and i didnt feel the need to change.
