So Much Damage Has Already Been Done’: The Fight to Reclaim the BluesAfter years of watching white artists and fans dominate a genre pioneered by Black people, artists like Buffalo Nichols are trying to bring the music they love back to its roots
Paywalled article by David Browne that makes some good points, but fails to acknowledge the existence of southern soul blues. I decided to be a know-it-all and tweeted nicely that he should listen to Dr Nick's "southern Soul Rompin" show and check out Big Daddy Nice's southern soul website (linked above a number of times)

Dr. Nick is on now @ WPFW 89.3 and online till 2 pm eastern time. Dierdra "Red Shoes" sounded great. Plus a song called "Blues Cowboy" was ok. Now he's reaching back to a passionate one from Tucka

Dr. Nick's Southern Soul Rompin' show is sounding great today, and I can't convince anyone on this music fan website to listen-- not the Daptone retro soul listeners, not the folks listening to current stream and radio r'n'b hits , nobody. Oh well.

Southern soul artists don't regularly come up even as far north as the Washington DC area, so I was kinda bummed that I was out of town when the below gig happened (saw some pics and such on FB)

Heard some great songs on Dr Nick's WPFW radio show while in the car. Need to go to the station's archives for last 2 weeks and look 'em up. A friend suggested I use something called Audio Hijack to tape his show. Plus I need to check out Daddy B Nice's suggestions from his blog and email. Although I like Dr Nick's choices better

Busy with other stuff, I missed that the Americana Fest happened September 13 to 17. But in looking at lineup I see they once again ignored southern soul . I called them out on it on twitter

Ever since Ch*ck Eddy left this thread ( and noted on Facebook he was now mostly bored with southern soul, no one else has joined me here. Oh well. Perhaps a more generic thread title years ago might have brought in a few more participants.

My preview ( alas edited down for space) of tonight’s DC gig is in link.
Am told that this same bill which is doing gigs throughout the south, will also be in Atlantic City , the farthest north in US this show has been in the US for years.

September Americana fest dates have been announced and I bet per usual they will ignore Southern soul or at best just have Bobby Rush doing a solo blues gig rather than one with his band and dancers that gets more soulful
― curmudgeon, Friday, 24 February 2023 18:30 (one year ago) link
The show was kinda fun but also a bit disappointing. Vocals were sometimes too low in mix. Theodis E thread title song mentioned here sounded great, but most of his set was fairly formulaic bluesy southern soul. Lenny Williams sounded pretty good. Did 2 old Tower of Power songs he had written. King George was fun but his voice was not as soulfully strong live as on recordings. Audience loved Keep on Rollin. Pokey Bear sang over tracks not a band as did Tucka. Pokey was energetic and doing crazy dancing. At times reminded me of Flavor Flave! “My Sidepiece” got a big response and sounded great. Tucka sounded strong at times but kept stopping and starting songs in an annoying way. He weirdly did part of a King George song and then stopped; plus a Pokey Bear one too. Calvin Richardson did part of a Bobby Womack song, handed out roses to ladies, and tried to be a suave soulman , but his band was mixed too loud in the mix and his voice wasn’t strong enough . Pretty big crowd. Emcee was a bit raunchy and Redd Foxx like . There were only a handful of white people like my wife and I there, but emcee saw some white folks up closer and joked “Obama got elected and white people want to go everywhere.” But that was just one little aside. There was also an over age 60 dance contest done to Juvenile song Back That azzz up.
The tour will go as far north as Atlantic City in March

Some of the same show participants will be at a fest in Manassas in April, and then Ms Jody and others will be at Lamont's in June. So suddenly more southern soul live in DC MD VA area then in awhile. Although Hardway plays monthly.
