why do people tag songs with the name of the artist? seems utterly pointless to me

Why do people tag at all? Is it to make a playlist or something? Seems utterly pointless to me.

I've not found how or where, but can you tag your songs in iTunes, and if so, will last.fm recognize that tag? I could see use in that, but otherwise, I just don't get the tagging I guess.

You can search for stuff by tags.

tagging on last fm is for tag radio and the like. It's nothing to do with ID tagging.

it's handy insofar as that it's a great way to search artists. i used it a lot for finding artists from a certain year, since lastfm doesn't really organize information chronologically (although i've since discovered rateyourmusic is much better for that). the problem is of course, everyone is responsible for tagging their own stuff, and as far as i can tell it isn't policed or moderated at all, so you end up with erroneous tags and whatnot.

the biggest pissoff for me is the tag "bands i've seen live".... WHO CARES?!?!

a year or two ago I tagged the ILX decade polls; if you have a paid account i'm pretty sure you can listen to one person's specific tags:

the tagging was tedious but it was a handy way to create a "station" that streamed the top 100 or so.

lots of tags are for personal reference, I had an "albums i've heard" tag, useful to no one but me.

wow i just passed 40,000 plays. the weird thing is my top artist apparently makes up less than 2% of my listening. Somehow I feel that's contributing to the world's ills.

i put down steely dan and fever ray as fave artists and then realise i have neither on my laptop. i was going thru albums i havent heard fully yet. so i stuck the arctic monkeys 2nd one on. i dunno i kinda like the guys lyrics but they get boring after a while, no? so arthur russell came on after and i didnt feel the need to change.

Have you heard Low's cover of Last Night I dreamt That Somebody Loved Me? I don't listen to Low that much these days, but their cover is still epic.

I love Low --- with a passion, but am not much of a fan of that cover in particular. I prefer the original.
