When this song comes up, I think of the review (Charles Aaron in Spin?, who knows) that had a line like – "He claims 'I don't even own a TV,' which means he must have copped those Elvis Costello moves while doing laundry at his parents' house."

I can't help it and love this song. It does seem to be one of those songs that people either love or hate.

I didn't hate it, just thought it was "trying too hard"... I would choose "Sex and Candy" over this one (they sort of go together in my mind).

i saw him open for Robyn Hitchcock 12 or so years ago, he had some nice tunes and sang harmony during some of Robyn's set. Also met him years later at a book swap at a bar, iirc he brought several Philip Roth books.
