idler wheel is fiona's best album, so i'll save my kendrick vote for another year

in places all over the world, real stuff be happening (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 25 May 2022 19:08 (two years ago) link

I had to vote for Frank Ocean simply because I played the shit out of that album for like 24 months straight. At home, on the way to and back from work, it actually kind of pisses me off that he doesn't tour or record that much, but whatever, he's got to do what he knows is good for him.

birdistheword, Wednesday, 25 May 2022 19:17 (two years ago) link

the top 3 here are still immense, then there's devotion, kaleidoscope dream, fin, armor on...

fantastic year but i have no idea which is my pick yet

a bunch of these years only go to around a top 40

it does have the "bubbling under" which are the next on the list that aren't in the site's top 4000 all-time so i would have just used that

ufo, Wednesday, 25 May 2022 21:17 (two years ago) link

Considered Channel Orange and Kaleidoscope Dream but voted Red.

Sad that the other Death Grips album isn't listed here, after I just came across this today

In an interview with Spin, MC Ride responded to the interest by saying, "If you look at that and all you see is a dick, I don't really have anything to say, pretty much. I looked at it and said, 'This is a great photo, and I'd love for this to be the album cover.'" Hill further explained, "It was difficult to do, honestly, in general, it was very difficult. It's difficult even telling people that's the source of it; it feels sacrificial in a sense. That idea existed long before, by the way. This is going to sound funny to other people, but we saw it as tribal, as spiritual, as primal. Also, it comes from a place of being a band that is perceived as...such an aggressive, male-based, by some, misogynistic-seeming band... It's a display of embracing homosexuality, not that either of us are homosexual. Am I making sense? People are still going to think that it's macho, but that's not the source of where it comes from." In a separate interview with Pitchfork, Hill expounded, "It's also a spiritual thing; it's fearlessness...it represents pushing past everything that makes people slaves without even knowing it."

Fiona

(But this was a rich year, plenty of choices)

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 25 May 2022 22:19 (two years ago) link

The singles this year were just massive.

Eggs Benedick (Eric H.), Wednesday, 25 May 2022 23:44 (two years ago) link

Went with Kendrick. He’s gone on to have one hell of a career, but GKMC has a lightness to it that I miss.

Funny how Born to Die was panned like crazy at first but retrospective rankings have put it in the top 10 here.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 26 May 2022 11:43 (two years ago) link

Gonna dissent - to me, this is a thoroughly humdrum year, as far as this poll is concerned, but also in general. Of Montreal, Micachu and Blut Aus Nord are my picks, and the only thing I'd consider voting for here is Kendrick, who of course doesn't need the votes

imago, Thursday, 26 May 2022 12:05 (two years ago) link

I agree. A lot of great artists on the list, but I'd rank nearly all of these albums somewhere in the 2nd - 4th range within their individual careers.

The bubbling under section is just a random list of like 200 more albums, I'm almost certain its not in any kind of order. In a way, I am still using it as I think all but one or two were on the bubbling under list.

I never proof read my posts before posting on here (I need an edit button), this time I did and found so many mistakes. Lesson learned I hope.

lots of stuff i like on here but not much i love except that mountain goats record which is prob my fav of theirs and kaleidoscope dream

looking up old lists my actual favorite record from this year is Wild Nothing - Nocturne

ciderpress, Friday, 27 May 2022 01:23 (two years ago) link

Probably Actress, Andy Stott or Kendrick but a weaker year for me all told. A lot of this stuff feels older than 10 years somehow? List needs Shackleton, Raime, Panopticon and Pelt.

can't you extend these polls for a little longer? they finish so fast

Dan S, Saturday, 28 May 2022 03:08 (two years ago) link

The Grimes single Oblivion and its video are great

still inclined to vote for Channel Orange though

Dan S, Saturday, 28 May 2022 03:22 (two years ago) link

I don't know that I would've voted for Jessie Ware in 2012, but that's what I'm doing now.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 28 May 2022 03:33 (two years ago) link

why set up a poll like this and then close it in 5 days?

Dan S, Saturday, 28 May 2022 03:36 (two years ago) link

Because five days is plenty of time and anything more is risking voter fraud!

birdistheword, Saturday, 28 May 2022 04:59 (two years ago) link

I know I've engaged reluctantly with the last couple but these polls should really last 0 days. We'd all get a lot more out of discussing the ILM 77s from each year than relitigating critical consensus

Grimes - Visions
Swans - The Seer
Death Grips - The Money Store
Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!
Baroness - Yellow & Green
Goat - World Music
The Mountain Goats - Transcendental Youth

I rep for all of these but my vote went to GOAT who are simply phenomenal.

I really wanted vote for Purity Ring or The Mountain Goats but this is very clearly Kendrick

Top 3 are amazing but wanted to throw out some love to Shields.

Voted for Swans. I should revisit it.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Sunday, 29 May 2022 13:01 (two years ago) link

I mainly remember 2012 for illness with a soundtrack of Hindemith instead, for some reason. But from the list, Kaleidoscope Dream is the one giving the strongest "you should dig me out and re-listen this instant" vibes, so that.

Voted Julia Holter

So did I - definitely my favourite of hers.

yugi ex, Monday, 30 May 2022 08:53 (two years ago) link

Voted for Miguel, might have gone for Jessie Ware instead had I not somehow missed it. Think my favourite album from this year would be Koi no yokan by Deftones (their overall best album maybe).

I remember the Converge album being good, I should revisit that.
