any take which implies the person writing it is the ultimate arbiter of what's good and what's bad is arrogant and annoying

I dont know who DJ Koze is but has he made a statement one way or the other in the wake of this?

This absurd vitriol about the album is making me want to hear it more and that's a bad thing.

I think these debates always end up focusing so much on "fandom" and "ok to like" to the exclusion of the main reason I think of when I decide to no longer support an artist - money. A recently deceased outsider Jazz artist and dead anti-semitic poets are a bad fit for Murphy, who is an artist with a new album to promote. I'd never buy a ticket for a new Polanski film, but am happy to watch The Tenant or Rosemary's Baby because he's unlikely to benefit from that in any way (specially if I pirate it). I don't want Murphy to benefit financially from her bigotry right now, if 80 years some ppl dig up this record and decide it rules that's fine.

― Daniel_Rf

I agree with this. Supporting her at the moment is giving her a voice and a platform for a bunch of twitter transphobes to hop on.

as for an actually substantive post to respond to, yeah, Daniel Rf, the money thing is the big element, but I still mention the noxious views of certain writers when I teach them.

― butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table)

This is the correct way to approach decades old content imho. I think history and art shouldn’t be erased or censored. Guiding students on how certain views or immoral people/content were normalized and laureated even when they had hurtful things in them is an important part of forming criteria.

Excluding an allegedly Irish woman from Irishness was a deliberate acknowledgement of the fact that the rise of TERFdom seems to be primarily a UK phenomenon, and is being heavily resisted in Ireland, because Irish people aren’t assholes.

There's as many assholes in Ireland as anywhere. I have no idea where you're getting the idea that Ireland is gallantly resisting the rise of TERFdom either.

Probably but let's leave the green tinted spectacles to one side for a moment.

Russia just passed a bill banning all gender-affirming healthcare, so probably up there with the UK

Excluding an allegedly Irish woman from Irishness was a deliberate acknowledgement of the fact that the rise of TERFdom seems to be primarily a UK phenomenon, and is being heavily resisted in Ireland, because Irish people aren’t assholes. My regrets abt last nights “raisin” posts are not because I have any anti-Irish sentiment in me but because there’s an overtone of ageism that is unnecessary, and for that I apologize

She’s not “allegedly” Irish, she is Irish, and we had this discussion upthread already where lazy anti-Irish sentiment - and yours was, regardless of whether you saw it that way - affects Irish people reading this by virtue of our shared characteristic.

In any case, we have better laws in Ireland but still many social conservatives. Again, completely unsure why her Irishness needs mentioning at all.

ydkb (gyac), Thursday, 14 September 2023 15:09 (eight months ago) link

Yes, I am surprised that writers misjudged a record that is bad from any angle, in any context; it’s not a question of taste, this album is dogshit with bleach sauce.

I mean I guess ultimately I don't believe that any piece of art can objectively be good or bad, or that there are any objective facts over the quality of art, that an opinion is by definition subjective and that anyone who suggests otherwise is either a fool or a charlatan, but I have no wish whatsoever to hear this record so I'll peace out of this argument tbh

Lumpy pillows, kiss my ass. Put that in your book (stevie), Thursday, 14 September 2023 15:09 (eight months ago) link

Well, to you gyac, and other Irish posters and readers, I offer my apologies! I hoped my own part-Irish genetics and general enthusiasm for the country and it’s culture would give me a pass, but it was a stupid assumption on my end and I am sorry.

my best wishes to all (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 14 September 2023 15:13 (eight months ago) link

Thank you.

Dj Koze is a fantastic oddball producer, his solo and remix work is definitely worth a listen. He’s not very active on social media iirc, I think he has an ig account but he mostly posts new releases. He doesn’t do much interviews either… I’m not aware of his current stance about this but wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t say anything. He worked on-off this album for years and he should be proud about his work. I’d be angry and frustrated at the whole situation since it was so easily avoidable and fixable.

Roisin has some classic songs, this album is a creative flop, it kind of sucks to feel like people can only be honest about this stuff when the person is Problematic in some fatally flawed way

Here’s an interview for the Guardian. It confirms he doesn’t like social media much and it’s his first interview in five years. It was done before this shitshow:

I’ve returned your permission slip to you D-40, unredeemed, with appreciation.

Generally in life and on this board I reserve my enthusiasm for “things that are great” and I’m myself jarred at reading my own responses regarding “something that is bad”, I’m gonna put the hater gloves back in the shed

If that's in reference to my post may I clarify you are welcome and indeed encouraged to hate on a piece of music as hard as you like, it's healthy, but I do believe that the opposing opinion can be just as valid for those who hold it.

Lumpy pillows, kiss my ass. Put that in your book (stevie), Thursday, 14 September 2023 15:29 (eight months ago) link

honestly I think questions of "is this good" or not are irrelevant right now. I've enjoyed her work in the past and I can't listen to it now because she's chosen evil

How far does the “TERFdom is a primarily UK phenomenon” argument go? Is Wales as TERFY as England? Milton Keynes more or less TERFY than Dundee?
Would be great to get more insight about the country I live in from people who may well have never set foot here.

houdini said, Thursday, 14 September 2023 15:38 (eight months ago) link

I don’t really think “is it good or not” is irrelevant. All of a sudden you *can* separate art from artist as long as it’s done wokely?

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 14 September 2023 15:47 (eight months ago) link

It seems to me a lot of ppl find her perspective sheds a new light on the music for them so it seems like if it’s good or not is a pertinent, contingent question

I can think of a few high profile media figures in Portugal who've gone terf recently in the wake of JK Rowling's bullshit. In the end media hack solidarity is stronger than any kind of national identity really.

What’s irrelevant exactly? People have shared their perspective on how this entire thing affects their experience of the music the whole thread — not sure what’s irrelevant about that.

think she actually spends more time living in Ibiza than anywhere else

The Sherburne piece says she moved to Brigante’s villa in Ibiza about three and a half years ago, to escape lockdown. Whether this has any bearing on her now exhibiting facebook brainworms is an exercise for the armchair speculator.

Big Bren, giddy like a schoolboy.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/09/14/roisin-murphy-olivia-rodrigo-no1-album-after-trans-row/

Fans have rushed to buy the record, urged on by comedy writer and gender-critical campaigner Graham Linehan and Brendan O’Neill, the author and free-speech advocate, who have enjoined their online followers to support Murphy.

O’Neill told The Telegraph: “It looks like cancel culture has finally met its match.

“The digital inquisition thought it could drag Murphy down but they’ve had a rude awakening.

“Loads of people are buying her album, firstly because it’s brilliant, and secondly because they want to show solidarity with a woman who was so ruthlessly and unfairly demonised by woke loons."

Interestingly the one post that she's liked pertaining to this whole saga is this one...

You've just given an apology to Glinner. It undermines your claims to be against people exploiting LGBT people for their own ends.

You also have most of the press to back you up, so hardly some voice in the wilderness. All you're doing is making the world worse for LGBT people.
