That's a nice find, thx (funny how everyone keeps talking about the album sounding strange or bizarre... it really doesn't, to me at least)

yeah the shaggs is a bit of a misnomer, it's more like dam funk's "adolescent funk" or something like that. it's pretty sophisticated for some children with just a few flat notes and some shaggy dog melodies (the best bit imo).

i just think it's quite sweet and charming really. a bit like if the protagonists from PEN15 made an album for a school project (with their idm german exchange teacher)

i kind of want "matthew"-era kool keith to come do a guest verse on "idiotic" (panned hard-right)

linee, Wednesday, 24 January 2024 21:49 (four months ago) link

xp Exactly - it's kind of remarkable they were so young; the lyrics & vox are fairly "accomplished."

(The 2000 date, and that CD-R cover, obv imbue it with a certain Y2K-nostalgia haze that makes for a great hook)

cellaring potential (morrisp), Wednesday, 24 January 2024 21:58 (four months ago) link

yeah that and especially the charlie's angels pose on their spotify artist photo is pretty period pitch-perfect

linee, Wednesday, 24 January 2024 22:04 (four months ago) link

linee i was thinking, but didn't wanna say it out loud, "this sounds like dr dooom" on a couple of the beats!! that's where the confusion lies for me: one doesn't normally expect to hear earnestly harmonizing young girls accompanied by, at times, such menacing music.

and i mean, the polyrhythmic textures on the song i posted above are, like... uhh also not what i'd expect to hear on, well, most pop records tbh.

kudos for the info. i'll say it again: all music is folk music.

+re:shaggs comparison-
meant more like a descriptir of context, rather than sound: "obscure lofi girl group" and whatnot.

especially the charlie's angels pose on their spotify

Haha, I didn’t realize they had a Spotify profile (with pics and full bio)… after all this scouring of Discogs / YouTube comments, etc. The link to the Numero Group IG acct is promising

last week i got a paypal receipt for a payment to apple - i think for my monthly apple tv+ subscription - that contains this line:

Seller
Apple Services
http://itunes.com/bill

that url goes to a band from eastern europe called “bill” in the iTunes store, which i didn’t even think existed anymore

funny, i downloaded this from the 365 project back in 2004– hadn’t thought about it for years.

guys i've found something weird.

it's an album, supposedly called goodbye (though it clearly says 'goodbye dolphin' on the cover) by a band called savend! spotify says it came out in 1977 and it has a private stock records logo clearly visible on the cover art.

https://open.spotify.com/album/6Ba8svyZ96gktErPqS6x46?si=aLNFh2Y1SK6h80NaoJ4l0w

it sounds like a late 70s private halls+oates album. the first track is called "imagination dancing" and it's a seriously good whiteboy roller disco bop. the singer has that very pleasing neil tennant/al stewart quality to their voice and there's a song about saving the ocean and some really fun production things happening.

thing is, i can't find any other evidence of it ever existing outside of spotify.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Sunday, 12 May 2024 02:10 (two weeks ago) link

oh yeah, it showed up in my "recommended for today."

seriously, how do you say no to this cover?
https://i.postimg.cc/QxrGbwwd/Screenshot-20240511-190418-Spotify.jpg

notice the listed band name appears nowhere on that cover.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Sunday, 12 May 2024 02:13 (two weeks ago) link

andy, my official sherlock homie, solved some of it pretty fast: https://www.discogs.com/release/6725555-Dolphin-Goodbye

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Sunday, 12 May 2024 02:17 (two weeks ago) link

https://www.discogs.com/artist/1135409-Paul-Carman-2

but that still leaves the question: where did the name savend! (stylized w/exclamation) come from? it's nearly impossible to search, as everything assumes you mean the album saved! by whatsizname.

all that to say, check out "imagination dancing" it rooolzzz!!!

dolphin - "imagination dancing" (1977)

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Sunday, 12 May 2024 02:22 (two weeks ago) link

and yes, dolphin has their own page on spotify. it's all digital 45s.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Sunday, 12 May 2024 02:24 (two weeks ago) link

is "savend" Swedish?

StanM, Sunday, 12 May 2024 03:55 (two weeks ago) link

Don't think so no

corrs unplugged, Sunday, 12 May 2024 09:10 (two weeks ago) link

Maybe some metatdata editing script with "save" and "end" commands got injected because of misspellings and an exclamation point.

Bertold Brak (bendy), Monday, 13 May 2024 15:54 (two weeks ago) link

idk, that script stuff is outside my sphere of knowledge. it's weird in any case, especially considering the proper profile for dolphin.

also should we have a paul carman thread? the more i look into him, the more jams i find.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Monday, 13 May 2024 18:47 (two weeks ago) link

and yeah, my first inclination was to run the word "savend" through google translate. came up with "saved" in many cases, including swedish.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Monday, 13 May 2024 18:50 (two weeks ago) link

Maybe we need a thread for lesser-known post-Rundgren white boy 70s soul

a blast from the past, the person who started that thread was once one of my best friends, and has since had multiple psychotic episodes and is a ward of his father. he has me blocked but emails me totally insane obscure youtube videos sometimes.
