His Jeff Lynne produced 1983 album was great tho.

Was "Juliet" a Jeff Lynne production? If so, it might be the best thing he's been involved with this side of "Xanadu" (ie post-1980).

Thanks for reviving this thread - it made me seek out this, which I hadn't heard in about 23 years:

Joseph, I have played "Boys Do Fall in Love" in my DJ sets a few times! So maybe you've heard it and just didn't notice...
― xhuxk, Thursday, 7 June 2007 12:04 (seventeen years ago) link
As noted above (and many years ago), Robin was always the most "pop" of the Gibb brothers.
Just dug out Robin's Reign again after some time -- it's every bit as good and awesomely over-orchestrated as I remember. "The Worst Girl In This Town," featuring a chorus wall of overdubbed Robins run through cavernous reverb, is particularly outstanding.
― Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:52 (seventeen years ago) link
yeah, I have both these records, and love "Mother and Jack" on Reign. I hope Rhino reissues them as part of their ongoing Bee Gees program.

just another vote for robins reign as an overlooked wonderpiece
― mully, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:56 (seventeen years ago) link
It should be noted that "Boys Do Fall In Love Aside," Secret Agent falls far short of How Old Are You? from 1983, which is just loaded with great synth pop tunes -- "Kathy's Gone" is my latest discovery/obsession from that record.
― Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 8 June 2007 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link
Great Robin feature with the Bee Gees:
Best song on Odessa IMO...
― Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 24 December 2008 16:08 (fifteen years ago) link
So Robin is the one who sings in that low voice on the Bee Gees "Nights on Broadway," right? I wish he'd sing like that more often. Love it.
I just discovered How Old Are You? yesterday. Such feel-good synth-pop!
― Patrick South, Friday, 13 February 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link
I don't think so -- it's him singing the "Well, I have to fahhhh-low you!!" part. Boy, I love that song, tho...
This is one of my faves of his solo stuff:

Jamming this song dailyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3k3y7dykx0I found Secret Agent at the station, too, and I think it sounds great. Haven't heard How Old Are You? but it's incredibly crepey title makes me want to.

Maurice has his own disc in the Mythology box. I checked the Robin disc out from my library, that's where I found Juliet.I made a mental note to check out Maurice's disc next.

From the Brothers official website "MYTHOLOGY also features the debut of a pair of previously unreleased Maurice Gibb tracks - "Angel Of Mercy" and "The Bridge." http://www.beegees.com/store/music/beegees-mythology/#more

I really dig that demo of "Islands" -- the chorus has a perfect Bee Gees feel to it. Would love to hear it in better sound.

robin's reign has been killing me recently. ridiculously deep music
guess i need to hunt down his synth pop stuff
is there a reasonable copy of sing slowly sisters floating around? the one i've been listening to sounds like a cassette dub. the wow and flutter kinda compliments the weirdness of the songs in a way tho

This is on the Bee Gees thread, too, but with all these half-assed Bee-Gees-obits-with-a-Few-Lines-About-Robin I've been seeing, I figured some solo Robin was appropriate here. If there's a more beautiful song than this, I haven't heard it:

The "How Old Are You" album is a bit underrated, actually.
RIP Robin, a unique talent. I hope his solo work from the '69-'70 gets properly reissued but I fear a lot of it's probably gone or else only exists on scratchy acetates. Feel for poor old Barry, the oldest and the last.

Awesome! A few years ago, the bio on his official site had links throughout to ~30 second audio clips of various tracks, and at one point it casually mentioned the Sing Slowly Sisters album with no indication that it was never released, and there was a clip of the title track that was obviously of much better quality than the bootleg versions, so I had a feeling this was in the works, but yeah, super stoked that it's really happening!
Anyone hear 50 St. Catherine's Drive? Worth checking out imo.

Revive! As winter approaches, this music always sounds so appropriate – like the soundtrack to Ethan Frome or something. Somehow, despite being ILM’s craziest Robin fan, I never bought the Saved By the Bell box and have only listened to it on Spotify. It’s worth noting that “Hudson’s Fallen Wind”—the 12-minute epic suite from which Robin’s Reign’s “Farmer Ferdinand Hudson” is excerpted—is amazing. The sound throughout is incredible.

heard robin's reign (and early bee gees for that matter) for the first time this week and i love it! i think robin's reign is the earliest example of drum machine on record that i can think of. very avant-garde!
