i imagine how i feel towards t-pain in 2007 is similar to how some feel about the modern cult of lil wayne. probly a little harsh of me though. also, i wonder if vocoderless 'church' coming out as a single + the absent britney work isn't the sign of a third will.i.am-ish stage of his career.

really not tryna make a thing of being internet shallow here but surely i can't be the only one allergic to even thinking about those kells & kanye passé-assed zero-replay "events"
― r|t|c, Friday, 26 October 2007 21:23 (sixteen years ago) link
it's definitely gonna be interesting to see what his next stage is (though I kinda want him to do a Sanga Ternt Rappa album). he could either disappear like Lil Jon or turn his guest spot ubiquity into people really caring about his own records, which for the most part they don't seem to yet. it's hard for me to compare his situation to Wayne's though, since they're both everywhere but with Wayne it's all based on (somewhat over-inflated) respect for his talent while T-Pain is still considered mostly a guilty pleasure or someone that people enjoy in spite of themselves, like even among your average rap/R&B radio listeners. aside from Kanye or occasional nutjobs like me hesitantly calling him a genius, most people just focus on the fact that he can't sing and that his autotuning shit is a gimmick, both of which are pretty much true, and yet...
― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 28 October 2007 00:08 (sixteen years ago) link
I'm not even going to address the fact that (I think) you used "zero-replay" to describe "I'm A Flirt," though. But "Good Life" definitely loses more of its appeal almost every time I hear it.

Amazingly I hadn't even heard it before looking it up on YouTube to figure out where it ranks on the list I posted on this thread. Once a song I'm sure I won't like hits the top 10 without my having heard it even once, I start to make a game out of how long I can go avoiding it (same thing happened with the Timbaland/OneRepublic song, which I unfortunately heard the other day). Is "Cyclone" getting heavy airplay on R&B station anywhere else?
― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 28 October 2007 00:26 (sixteen years ago) link
Here. And the top 40 station, too. It's bad, but not, say, "Shawty" bad. T-Pain's untranscribable vocal sound effect at the end crack me up, but mostly this is just a half-assed "U & Dat" rehash.
― The Reverend, Sunday, 28 October 2007 00:41 (sixteen years ago) link
I voted for "Kiss Kiss" only because I spent literally hours this morning trying to figure out what it is. I heard it on the radio Friday morning but came in right at T-Pain's rap. So I was searching for something that was way less sing-songy than Chris Brown. If "Kiss Kiss" were all T-Pain hyperventilating and "ooh-wee"ing unnaturally, I'd top ten it.
Btw, if you're ever looking for the title of a song you heard on the radio, check out yes.com.

― J0rdan S., Monday, 29 October 2007 06:26 (sixteen years ago) link
tru enough about the critical guilty pleasure thing, tho my point was more about a slight frustration at his comedy mugging for the limelight where once he just like, sang songs. and i know that's gonna sound pretty ridiculous to most people for whom 'stripper' and 'sprung' were equally as gimmicky as the stuff he does now (cos they are!) (tho sprung is a beautiful song) (but then so is 'buy u a drank') but in terms of comparing the albums there was just a realer rnb fidelity going on in the first that's gone missing a little in epiphany. but i'm not sure why i'm even bothering to press this point cos i doubt very much that anyone who stuck rapper ternt sanga on now would find it anything but a bit boring compared to the t-pain they're used to - the narrative probly doesnt work backwards.
(haha i wonder if there are grumpy og black eyed peas fans who are still saying the same about their fake roots incarnation)
(er 'joints & jam' IS obv the best bep single tho)
i'm probably just punishing 'flirt' for the album and trapped in the closets yeah, but once you lose patience with kells the good stuff loses charm same as the bad i find. the kanye album i havent had the strength to bother with again after its two weeks were up. quite dispiriting really.

― r|t|c, Monday, 29 October 2007 12:42 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah I think you're kind of going out on a limb with the idea that T-Pain was ever real plain ol' R&B and not from the start a slumming rapper who could kinda carry a tune and used technology to help get him the rest of the way there. The distance from "Sprung" to what he's doing now is so much more minute than, say, the distance from early R. argument-songs to "Trapped." I should go back to that first album and see what I like, though, Epiphany's at its best for me in the more formal R&B moments, "Church" aside. And let's please not start with the calling the follow-up to one of the biggest albums of Mariah's career a "comeback."
No argument re: "Joints & Jam," though.

I'm driving across country this week and I went through KC, Columbia MO and STL today, and listened to R&B stations all day (like seven hours today). It was like T-Pain day (probably every day, I don't usually listen to the radio this much) but I was amazed: I heard T-Pain at least 8 times : heard "Kiss Kiss" three times, "Good Life" twice, and "Shawty", "I'm So Hood" and "Cyclone" each once.
fun fact: when "Beautiful Girls" came on my wife asked "does he have a speech impediment?" (n.b. she only listens to classical so listening to r&b with her is like culture shock)

THREAD REVIVE
Songs been around for a while, but "Beam Me Up" with Tay Dizm and our fave Ricky Ross just released a video recently, so I hope to God I hear this blasting out of every car if this makes it on the radio. I'm loving this song so much
To agree with Alex above (albeit three months late): The first 20 seconds of that song are glorious, then the way the beats switch up throughout the song and the bridge... way awkward. I also never expected Rick ROss to use the phrase "thus far" in a chorus, ever.
