I was thinking about him this morning waiting for the bus -- I had to wait a little while longer than usual and so took a walk around a local park in the coolness right before the sun peeked over the hills. I wondered what his photographic eye would have made of it.

I haven't met all that many ILXers, but I met Nick at a FAP (probably same one Dr.C mentions). He came across as friendly, cool, enthusiastic. And gabba.net was a great Project (which I leeched on regularly in its early days). That Junior Boys post just made me tear up. RIP.

some of those photos are quite beautiful

Johnny, I'd mail you if I could but I can't log into ilx to actually see your email address. I hope you get through tonight - one step at a time, ok? Although I didn't know Nick very well at all I'm still shaken up so I can imagine you must be having a hard time.

Sarah C, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

looking over his photos, which i've always found haunting, has been endowed with a chilling resonance. somehow they seem so much more personal now. they are beautiful.

I didn’t know him at all, never talked to him, but now I feel as though I should have, that I missed out on a lot.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I only really knew of Nick through visiting gabba, taking an interest in the Junior Boys and seeing his words, name and - I suppose - influence here and elsewhere online.

It's been a bad year for the left field.
RIP - and thoughts with those of you who knew him that bit better.

coco, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

oh god, no. I only talked to him briefly at Club FT but assumed I'd be able meet him properly in the future... this is horrible. condolences to all who knew him well, and RIP.

so sorry,
i wish the best for nick's family & those who knew him better than me,
reading all the lovely things that people have written here & on the web just reminds me what a special person he was, so committed to his mission, an optimist and a beleiver, so generous with his enthusiasm and energy..
too too sad

ed / sufi, Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:48 (nineteen years ago) link

this is devastating. my condolences to his family and close friends. i'd never met him in person - we might've chatted online briefly and we've exchanged a word or two on this forum - but i suppose my realest connection to him was through gabba, which, through his enthusiasm, did as much to make me the music fan i am today as anyone or anything else. but taste and music seem so unimportant right now, in the face of this.

rest in peace, Nick.

Not a big thing but i played a gig with my band tonight and dedicated a song to Nick on the spur of the moment (even though i didn't know him outside of his blog/this board). "This is for Nick, a friend of music."

i was shattered this morning only to wake up to an email saying nick had passed. i was just in london a few weeks ago and for some reason nick was on my mind heavily and i really wanted to see him. now i know why . . . he was loved and will be deeply missed. all my love goes out to dee and nick's family and friends.

Just got back from holidays to see this thread. Absolutely saddened, I still remember the moment when I connected that all these moments on the internet (and later in the record store) were connected to him.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 10 February 2005 11:24 (nineteen years ago) link

like many people here i never met him in real life and we did not really know each other. i only knew him from what is on the www and chatting with him on slsk once about an interview with junior boys i did for de:bug. last year a close friend of mine died and although as i said before i never met nick for real i was shocked yesterday when i found out about his dead. i wish for his close friends and family all the strength they need now.

rené margraff, Thursday, 10 February 2005 11:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Just found out about Nick this morning – it's tragic. Almost every time we spoke it was at a gig (usually a Lex Records event) or with loud music blaring in the background. That's how passionate about music he was, he lived it.

very sad news, a creative mind. He'll be missed.

Tomm, Thursday, 10 February 2005 12:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I have known Nick since 1991. I am still very shocked and upset, and have so many memories of him these last couple of days... On a musical note, I noticed today that about 2 out of every 5 songs on my iPod are songs that Nick recommended, either through gabba or his postings, or else through our discussions on the phone or in person. With unfaltering drive and generosity, he was a genius musical matchmaker. I agree with what has been said about Nick's enthusiasm, for music as well as for films, art, ...The image I have is of Nick running from stage to stage at Glastonbury 1992, trying to catch all the acts he was excited about at the time.
Very sad news.
R.I.P. Nick

I checked Gabba often (it was the first mp3-blog I found) and almost always got something really great from it. So sad to hear this. My deepest sympathies to all who knew and loved Nick.

I never met Nick, but I was a frequent visitor of GABBA and am in love with the Junior Boys cd. Having just found out about this, i am overwhelmed with emotions. Sometimes there is such beauty in life it's hard to take in and this news and thinking of his life and the people he affected just has me in tears. I will keep living my life with the passion and enthusiasm he did, and never take for granted anyone that has come into my life. Rest in Peace and my thoughts are with his friends and family.

maybe it's a little soon to ask something like this, but does anyone know how long his domains are registered for? it would really be a shame if his photos went offline. i didn't know him, so it would maybe not be my place, but i am going to go through sometime this week and save them all if someone at some point would like to rehost them.

Nick e-mailed me back in early 2003 because he enjoyed my photolog at the time and encouraged me to check out his own. http://www.electrokin.com/zabriskie_point/ He described it as:

"Zabriskie Point is a place for images that have recently fallen out of my camera. Words and meanings are few, I like the images to speak for themselves. It's named after both the visually stunning film by Antonioni - highly subjective and indulgent, albeit enjoyably so - and the remote Borax mine in the centre of death valley. My aim is to achieve a similar purposelessness."

He also told me to check out the main site, his label, and that I'd be hearing from it soon.

Later when that Junior Boys album came out, I remember thinking how fucking cool that was. He said it and he did it.

Reading through all these comments, it's comforting to read about the positive impact he had on so many people through his sheer enthusisam and determination.

R.I.P. Nick.

Just last week I went to Nicks home town with Nick his girlfriend Dee and my girlfriend Kate, he was so excited, so out there, his usual self, and a week later this happens, I think we're all still in shock and I really don't know what to say on this thread, but its been really amazing to see this response and its helping everyone a lot, and its great to see this appreciation of what nick did, I know it would have meant a lot to him, thanks.

jk_ (jk@gabba), Friday, 11 February 2005 10:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I am in shock
I met Nick about a year ago and hung out with him a bunch of times, his passion was astounding, when he first played me Junior Boys he couldn't enthuse about it enough. I saw him a while back and he told me about unhappy he was and we said we'd meet up but.. we didn't. Nick you'll be missed

Nick Kilroy dead. I know, that this, cannot be true.

Nick, I know you'll still be discovering the next big thing when the rest of us have long settled for comfortable familiarity, you'll still be up filtering through a bottomless stash of new music long after the rest of us have called it a night, you'll still be there grinning by the big speakers on the dance floor when the rest of us have long gone home exhausted, you'll still be thumbing through the listings to find where that obscure film is screening while the rest of us nod off to the latest block buster, you'll still be seeing the unnoticed beauty in the grimy, decaying world around us long after we've all stopped looking, you'll still be hurtling down the motorway at night with the stereo on full blast en-route to the-coolest-gig long after the rest of us have settled for the box and the couch, you'll still be telling writers, artists and musicians how great you think their stuff is long after we've all lost any critical judgment, you'll still be giving out praise and encouragement when the rest of us are jaded and cynical, you'll still be providing original, intelligent analysis and thoughtful insight when the rest of us have long settled for repeating acquired wisdom, you'll still be infecting the world with your endless enthusiasm long after the rest of us have literally given up, and most of all, of course, there is no doubt, you'll still be making us sublime compilations and pouring out endless recommendations long, long, long, after we've all completely run out of things we like.

FUCK IT.

Stop all the music, dismantle the song.
Nick Kilroy, music's biggest fan, has gone.

When I visited London in May of 2003, Nick was one of the more memorable people I met. He made me feel earnestly welcome and expressed a great deal of interest about who I was and where I came from. As fate would have it, I subsequently realized that nick.K was the same guy I had exchanged musical tastes and opinions with on Soulseek. His personal collection of greatest hits from 2003 is one of my favorite playlists from recent years.

Rest in peace, Nick.

So sorry to hear the news, a real shock and very sad. Nick, along with the rest of the Gabba crew gave me my first break at DJ-ing in London for which I am very grateful and I know he will be greatly missed. RIP.

Tireless enthusiasm, never known anybody quite like him.
