Nu-metal, though I'm not so keen on deathcore either. Could never vote for Metalcore because Calculating Infinity is one of the most bitchingly awesome albums ever.

modern day metalcore then for the purposes of this poll. the shit thats been so ubiquitous the past 5 years or so

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 18 September 2009 23:22 (fourteen years ago) link

There are exactly two bands in the nu-metal neighborhood that I fucking love. Sepultura and Will Haven. WHVN are so fucking underrated, it's sad.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 19 September 2009 01:23 (fourteen years ago) link

nu-metal was a quick-fadded scourge that managed to simultaneously do even more to "malign the genre of metal" whilst dragging down further the mental intellect of bozos throughout the world. Metalcore wins out of the three, singularly because of Converge. Fuck knows what Deathcore is, but it doesn't sound very good.

dog latin, Saturday, 19 September 2009 01:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Converge, while being a band that meld hardcore and metal, are not really anything to do with metalcore the genre as being discussed in this thread.

imo

amarillo fat (jim), Saturday, 19 September 2009 14:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd half forgotten about Botch. C. Thomas Howell as the Soul Man is a jam.

amarillo fat (jim), Saturday, 19 September 2009 14:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh come on, people. Sure, there's a lot of really crappy metalcore, but the big dogs of the genre like Shadows Fall, God Forbid, Killswitch, and All That Remains have released some seriously awesome material. I'd rather listen to the worst Shadows Fall record than the very best that nu-metal had to offer. At least those bands have killer guitar work and solos and not just "chunk chunk chunk."

Defender Of The Girly Metal Faith (J3ff T.), Saturday, 19 September 2009 19:13 (fourteen years ago) link

All That Remains and God Forbid have turned into a couple of pretty great bands. Tough to call either metalcore anymore...those hardcore elements are minimal now.

xxxpost - Word As Law and Souls at Zero are definitely the tipping points between their hardcore and metal eras. As someone who saw those early tours, I certainly remember a lot of punks crying foul that Word As Law sounded like Metallica and that Souls At Zero sounded like a movie soundtrack.

They really had me from Pain of Mind thru Enemy of the Sun. With Through Silver in Blood came Ozzfests and Pantera tours and I lost interest until Times of Grace.

No matter what they do, I like the band and respect them. But when I reach for an album to spin, it's always one of the first 4.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 20 September 2009 21:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Just because they went on ozzfest after TSIB ,you shouldnt hate it! It rules!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 20 September 2009 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Nu-metal doesn't bother me now, hated it at the time, but I am v unlikely to actually hear it.

Metalcore and Deathcore I'm not sure about yet - can somebody clarify by saying if they are True Metal or False Metal?

I am using your worlds, Monday, 21 September 2009 01:52 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost-I don't hate it. I just didn't give it a chance. Yet.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 28 September 2009 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

all the death metal djs at my radio station hate "core," and complain about it all the time, which is weird cause i can't even tell one from the other and i listen to deathmetal. i guess it's like how the line between emo and pop punk is really thin and ambiguous, but certain pop punk kids still the shit out of hate emo.

samosa gibreel, Monday, 28 September 2009 23:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Horrorcore

*still hate the shit out of emo.

also by "core" i mean deathcore.

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 12:39 (fourteen years ago) link

if those voting for nu-metal had heard loads of metalcore and deathcore bands im not sure they would vote nu-metal tbh. but i dont blame them for not wanting to check it out.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 13:36 (fourteen years ago) link

The thing with deathcore, while I don't think much of it as a style, is that someone who didn't fuck with DM in the first place probably wouldn't find it appreciably less likeable than grown-up DM

i wonder which core will finish 2nd to nu metal. Im gonna guess metalcore as deathcore is still kinda new and not as well known yet.

I have nothing against testosterone or any other hormone. Also, I refute the liberal lie that masculinity = evil and femininity = good.
On the other hand, I do loathe the kind of bands you're describing and wish I could slap their witless heads with a large stick.

where my steroids then?

where u draw the liney, Whiney? (Ioannis), Wednesday, 30 September 2009 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

five years pass...

I'm finding metalcore a bit more loathsome than nu-metal these days because nu-metal seemed to flame out quicker, and also put out more material that I liked even though I overwhelming hated it?

I mean I hate to be 'that scenester guy', the one I made fun of in my early 20s, but my problem with the hardcore metalcore scenesters (they exist) is their indignance at being called 'metalcore', they want to be considered metal and moreso want this subgenre branded as the epitome of metal.

I mean I know, I know, far be it for me to cast stones at metalcore-heads when there are knuckle-dragging metalheads who basically consider any kind of musical progression a travesty and express the same narrow tastes (I tend to avoid these people as well), but this past week an acquaintance posted to FB asking specifically for metal recommendations and it was somewhat aggravating to me that out of all 10-11 respondents, about 7 of them pretty much listed all metalcore bands and no music pre-2005.

Metalcore as a subgenre had a lot of potential, I was really into Killswitch Engage's "Alive or Just Barely Breathing" and Shadows Fall's "Of One Blood" because there were genuine instrumental hooks on them and there was a lot of effort placed into the compositions, but instead of using the template as a launching pad, it kind of just became a LiteBrite pattern...even KE having diminishing returns over time in aping themselves.

Nu-metal was aggravating because of its machismo and how dumbed down it was but a lot of their fans at least recognized it *wasn't* metal and was its own thing. And while I realize metalcore isn't any legitimate 'threat' to metal as a genre like a bunch of laughable scenesters accused nu-metal of in the early 00s, it does grate on me the revisionism that many of these hardcore metalcore fans want to apply to metal. LIke they want to have a place at the table without earning it.

It's why I often dread going to Rockstar Mayhem Fest even when there are great lineups. When I saw Motorhead the pussies behind me were heckling them while roaring until they were hoarse for the uber-generic and dull All That Remains. Nu-metal was a gateway for many people to get into metal (Slipknot especially cos of their dabbling in elements of grind) whereas metalcore isn't serving as much as a gateway cos these kids don't want to leave their comfort zone and just want this limp-dicked brand of warmed-over sub-Sentenced-Amok era riffs with emo choruses until their hearts explode.

at the end of the day they're harmless and not a real threat to metal (unlike nu-metal, I see few long-standing metal bands co-opting any of this shit other than maybe Machine Head, and even then only trace elements) so this is really more "old guy on lawn" ranting but I really am tired of starting convos with people about music and having them say they like metal and getting excited only to hear them say "YEAH man Five Finger Death Punch and Halestorm are the best, man" and realizing that I'd better change subjects quick lest I experience Teufel's Tomb levels of scenester rage.

also Tear Out the Heart are like the worst thing I've ever heard, I buried their album under a pile of books at the local indie shop where Avenged Sevenfold fans will never find it

I really am tired of starting convos with people about music and having them say they like metal and getting excited only to hear them say "YEAH man Five Finger Death Punch and Halestorm are the best, man"

this scenario is so alien to me wrt the way I converse with people

idk if it's luck or apathy on my part but I never really feel like I'm hugely invested in someone else liking the same things as me
