is there more in it than joy division, talking heads, the smiths?

erik, Sunday, 20 October 2002 10:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah - there are also some woefully typical indie 'bakesale' style guitars that go 'gunga dunga dunga dunga" through a couple of the songs that made my heart sink a bit during the first listen. Luckily I kept listening. It's not the most original album I've ever heard - so I'd say you're on the money with those comparisons, but sounding like those three (and then adding a bit of flourish) isn't exactly a crime in my book.

I posted here because I haven't commented on them before, but there are a lot of other threads on them, so I suspect you won't get too many new responses here. Try the search at the bottom of the page to find out what other people have said.

I disagree. Every time people mention Interpol, the very first thing they say afterwards is Joy Division.

I listened to the entire album, and at most I can tell they enjoy the music of joy division. I think this is much more punky, and it lacks the vintage synth's.

Well he shouldn't've gotten drunk and mooned that freight train then.

Naw, my real dad's just got corn problems on his feet. What I meant was Interpol sound like My Dad Is Dead to me (as I'm sure I've posited elsewhere).

I'm on my second listen, and so far I'm digging it.

the production's a bit thin, which worries me

ksh, Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:45 (thirteen years ago) link

is this sounded a little more like their last record than their first two records to anyone else? (at least production-wise?)

ksh, Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:47 (thirteen years ago) link

*sounding

ksh, Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:47 (thirteen years ago) link

If you mean "sounds like unmemorable garbage," then yes. This band lost the plot so quickly after album #1 that it should serve as a lesson to bands everywhere.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 29 April 2010 08:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I found myself absolutely loving 3 songs on each of the last two records, while not playing the rest of the songs more than twice.

seen the 3d animation that 'creates' it?

totally ott.

especially for an 'unsigned' act (as per the detail on their myspace).

The new album's great, but ridiculously back-loaded. Gibbered all over the other thread already, so not going to repeat myself too much.

New album Marauder out 08/24, produced by Dave Fridmann. Single's nice and propulsive but not too distinctive to me yet.
