Greatest lost band? C or D?

Why are Cast so thoroughly underrated? They are better than the La's, which John Power bas bassist in.
In All Change they made the greatest debut album in the last 20 years of Uk Music. Better than the 1st stone roses, suede, blur,Smiths,Oasis,New Order and any other Canonised bands .
John Power is the most gifted songwriter since John Lennon.A far better lyricist than Richey Manic.
And I can assure you theres never been a better live band in the 90s.
Yet they always get dismissed along with also-rans like Bluetones,Shed Seven, menswear,Ocean Colour Scene, Sleeper,Northern Uproar.
Why?
Its time this band received the credit it deserved!
So cast Classic great lost band? or Dud?

you're kidding, aren't you?

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 21 October 2002 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

See many colours but the only colour I wanna see is red.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

He's got to be kidding.

Calum Robert to thread!

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 21 October 2002 11:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Say Frank Hunter 10 times!

kinski (kinski), Monday, 21 October 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not kidding. Im deadly serious.
cast are a great lost band.
Beetroot will in time be seen as the great lost classic album of the decade. Never judge a band by the singles. Try listening to full albums. The way theyre meant to be heard. Otherwise you shouldnt bother buying albums and just download the singles for free IMO.
And if you dont think Cast were amazing live then you obviously didnt see them in concert.

Frank, Monday, 21 October 2002 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

AMG on 'Beetroot'

"So does a sense of sonic adventurousness. Each song sounds like a lot of time was spent on the small details like the surface noise on "Kingdom & Crowns", the funky wah-wah guitar on "I Never Can Say", the circus-like keyboards on "High Wire", the parping flute on the groovy "U-Turn". Beet Root is a really solid and fun modern rock record. Lee Power's vocals are great and the songwriting is uniformly strong. Yet another case of a band doing their best work once no one cares about them anymore. If you were a fan of Cast and wrote them off you really should give them another chance"

Frank, Monday, 21 October 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim Sendra to thread!

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Well Mavers disagrees with you at least...

not even the rockists on ILM are going to agree with you on this one. I think Cast are OK actually, but "greatest debut album in the last 20 years of Uk Music"?

g (graysonlane), Monday, 21 October 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Always considered Cast a haemorrhoid on the backpassage of Brit-Rock myself. I stopped buying MM around the time they were given the cover.

stevo (stevo), Monday, 21 October 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

''Calum Robert to thread!''

hehe...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 21 October 2002 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Cast had the odd decent single. But largely it was turgid drivel.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Why all the hatred of Cast? Because they weren't trendy and full ironic 80s influences?
I suggest you all go buy or download Beetroot. It will surprise you the difference between that album and the singles that got played on radio. (i assume noones ever heard full albums)

Frank, Monday, 21 October 2002 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

i have the albums besides beetroot. they all have some decent tracks. Of course if you hate guitar rock categorically you wion;t like any of it.

g (graysonlane), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Because they weren't trendy and full ironic 80s influences?

Implying that your favorite bands include Paik and Current 93. Interesting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 21 October 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Id like to at least see reasons why people dont like them other than 'dad rock' 'noel rock' etc criticisms. And they certainly arent like the terminally dull OCS.
Beetroot isnt like that at all. Its more influenced by Sly & The Family Stone than Who or Beatles.
Although some on here think Sly Stone is 'rockist ' anyway.

Maybe its worth some of you open minded people to give it a listen. And atleast if then you still dont like them fair enough.
Although some on here think Sly Stone is 'rockist ' anyway.

I'd also like to add that Kenickie are also vastly underrated.

Frank, Monday, 21 October 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I assume there must be some other kenickie fans on here?

Frank, Monday, 21 October 2002 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course Kenickie are underrated. They were one of the greatest pop bands of the last 20 years.

Anyone know what John power and Lauren laverne are upto?
Last I heard Power was doing acoustic solo gigs in the channel islands and Lauren Laverne was married and presenting glastonbury on tv.

Frank, Monday, 21 October 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

cast and manics have one thing in common, they were both rejected by sarah records.

keith (keithmcl), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah Records had already shut down by the time Cast appeared, hadn't it? The Manics would have been too political for them. Plus, Matt Haynes has cloth ears (certainly these days, anyway).

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

And if you dont think Cast were amazing live then you obviously didnt see them in concert.

I saw Cast supporting Pulp in Germany at the tail end of '95, and blow me down if they weren't actually really quite good. I could never call myself a "fan", never owned an album or even a single by them. In fact, they pretty much embodied everything I *hated* about Britpop - horrible anoraks, doggedly retro sounds, intellectually-challenged interview techniques, bad hair - but...well, that gig was good, and John Power seemed like a really nice, honest lad.

Mind you, so did Danny McNamarra, so perhaps it's all grist to the mill for my "nice blokes are genetically programmed *never* to make great records" theory...

Charlie (Charlie), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

To actually namecheck a couple of bands: The Prisoners, and Eleventh Dream Day

Up to the minute John Power sighting: http://pub88.ezboard.com/fthelasfrm1.showMessage?topicID=442.topic

You'll find other people there who will agree with you as well. Personally, I have to agree with Mavers and say that Cast was nowhere near as great as the La's.

Aaron W., Tuesday, 22 October 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently Lauren has more than enough material for an album, she just can't get any label interest. Or something like that.

Justin M (Justin M), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

If she can get me Emmy Kate's phone number, I'LL put her record out

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

no, there is an interview on the pennyblack site with the sarah people where they admit to rejecting both. the manics weren't any more political than the label was, the music was apolitical but the label wasn't.
the new cody album is good, and fosca's record is fantastic.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm.. to be honest I think Fosca are complete garbage, and Cody are in desperate need of some personality, but it's all just my opinion blah blah blah. I could well just be going through a personal twee backlash. But that can't be the case because I still think Matinee is one of the greatest US indie labels evah.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Where can i find this pennyblack site?

Frank, Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:10 (twenty-three years ago)
