Paradise Garage, although I think we've had a relatively recent thread about historical concerts we've been to. Lj, settle down.

imago, Friday, 5 September 2014 19:54 (nine years ago) link

Ah well, it seemed like a good idea.

Paradise Garage, Jamaica and Ibiza beach all sound like the most fun. Feel like I'd be on good drugs for these.

First Can show and Suicide and Beefheart practices - pretty awesome in theory, possibly major bummers in real life. Feel like I would be on bad drugs for these.

Went with Jamaican soundclashes.

Brio2, Friday, 5 September 2014 19:56 (nine years ago) link

This is somewhere just above the opening of a new Starbucks and just below being first in line to see Transformers 4.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 5 September 2014 19:57 (nine years ago) link

Voted for the one I most wish I could actually claim which is duh Jamaica + soundclashes

Οὖτις, Friday, 5 September 2014 19:58 (nine years ago) link

fuck dude i don't know, jamaica was basically a war zone in the 70s, you could've been shot just hanging out at a sound system

marcos, Friday, 5 September 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link

i'd probably go w/ ibiza in 88.

playing daft punk to some rock dudes seems like the worst of these imo

marcos, Friday, 5 September 2014 20:03 (nine years ago) link

I was there when Dave Matthews went baritone.

when living in an espcially crappy part of the country, I once cut & pasted the entire band catalog from this song into the "favorite music" section of an okcupid profile, looking for someone to join me in awkward hipsterish self-loathing.

either nobody got it, or the rest of the profile scared 'em off....

I saw the debut London gigs of Sonic Youth & the Swans in December '83 and April '84.

I saw the guy who went off with the shopping trolley Neubauten had had onstage with them get stopped from taking it onto a nightbus at Trafalgar Square in '85.

Was at one of the lesser JAMC riots at the Electric Ballroom.

Wow gosh isn't that impressive.

Stevolende, Saturday, 6 September 2014 00:46 (nine years ago) link

you never made a dime

mookieproof, Saturday, 6 September 2014 00:53 (nine years ago) link

Kiss at Varsity Stadium in 1976--not historical, just stupid fun I'm proud to have witnessed.

Neil Young debuting Rust Never Sleeps in 1978--that was kind of historical.

Seeing R.E.M. at Larry's Hideaway in 1983 for $5--I guess they'd already been around for a few years by then.

A Beastie Boys club show before Licensed to Ill came out.

Greil Marcus once filled out his Pazz & Jop ballot in this fashion, and his list was a little better than mine--Beatles' last show, Woodstock, Sex Pistols' last show, etc.

i'll probably never top this though:

i saw harvey play a beach party here in hawaii just three days ago. a half hour before sunset he put on E2-E4. about 25 minutes in i went up to him and asked, "are you going to play this one all the way through?" he smiled huge and replied "of course, man!" it was dark by the time the song's 58th minute rolled around. the mixture of an epic sunset with an epic track orchestrated by such a master selector created something hard to describe. it will probably remain one of my top 5 musical moments for the rest of my life.

I was at the Jane's Addiction show included in the Cabinet of Curiosities box.
I was at Pussy Galore's last L.A. show in 1989.
I was at the GG Allin show that opens the movie Hated.
I was at Patti Smith's NYC comeback show at Irving Plaza in 1996.
I was at the first NYC show by the reunited Stooges in 2003.
I was at 2NE1's first East Coast concert in Newark, NJ (their second US performance ever).
I was at Fushitsusha's last NYC show in 2003.
I was at Sonny Rollins's 80th birthday concert when Ornette Coleman came out and they played together for the first time since, like, 1960.
I think that's all I got.

Right after moving to Seattle in spring 1990 I was riding the bainbridge island ferry with my friend who had already been there a few months and he introduced me to Chad Channing; looking at the timeline I guess he must have just left Nirvana (who of course I'd never heard of at the time).

I was there at passerby when James Murphy told me he was recording a song about how impressed he was with all the hip young bands and how much they know.

I was there after the outhud show in the back of passerby when Thomas or Eric played Losing my Edge and Beat Connection and nobody I was with had any idea what it was.

I was there on ILX dropping names still in 2014.

I shook his hand at the end, felt a real connection
