I am over 38 and know the heck out of U2. First concert! Joshua Tree tour at the Spectrum in Philly. I still have the t-shirt. A friend borrowed it for an '80s themed party. I thought it kind of lame that he would wear a U2 shirt to an '80s party, but I guess it *was* the '80s, so...

U2 - I still haven't found what I'm looking for

OK I definitely know the shouty parts at the beginning - coulda sworn it was by an 80s American stadium rock band though

Does the music video involve an empty beach?

I dunno the chorus tho

20 is too young. you need to be able to remember a time when U2 weren't irredeemably corny, which either happened with rattle and hum or with zooropa, so i guess better terminals would be 35 or 40 respectively (it was rattle and hum tho)

龜 I am about the same age as you and the first time I remember being aware of U2 was when they appeared in the 200th episode of the Simpsons, were you familiar with U2 before this/did their Simpsons appearance have a big impact on how you thought of them?

U2 were at a pretty low ebb when that Simpsons episode aired, though; Pop was tanking, and the ABC-TV special promoting the tour was the lowest-rated non-news show in the history of US television.

Agree, but also wanted to see how much of this ubiquitous cultural presence I have managed to miss

Like I also don't really know the Beatles

Have downloaded their discography at least 3 times

But never made it past the first two albums

And I know the first two were not the ones that everybody else rates

But even then I know some of the classics

Like "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" or "Come all over me"

U2, otoh, it looks like the only one I /really/ know is Beautiful Day

, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 17:40 (nine years ago) link

If you are determined to go through the Beatles in some kind of chronological order, probably start with Rubber Soul.

Last Night On Earth - Nope

I Will Follow - Nope, but this song reminds me of OP's The Riverland

Bad - Nope.. Having listened to a few U2 songs by now this, I feel like this kind of shouty and ponderous U2 is probably what they're like on all their new stuff

The Refugee - Nope, sounds pretty funky though, I like this

Seconds - Nope, what's this drummer banging on, I feel like he's got a big kit though

Two Hearts Beat As One - Nope, but is this song the source of all the "Two Butts Beating As One" jokes? Isn't there a Kylie Minogue song called this? I like this though, it's the jangly indie U2 from upthread

Cop Killer - Not actually a U2 song, apparently actually by Body Count, good song though

I Threw A Brick Through A Window - Nope, I like this song though, did U2 start as rebellious punks?

Gloria - Nope, starting to figure out what the cuts from this album remind me of - the Cure! Which is probably why DJP is making me listen to all the songs from this album

Stories For Boys - Nope, but this is good, the shouty parts remind me of early the Offspring

Sweetest Thing - Nope

Suicide Blonde - Not actually by U2, actually by INXS, I guess the joke is that this kinda sounds like U2?

Vertigo - Think I already listened to this

Just A Friend - Not actually by U2 unless you trust this website, actually by Biz Markie, I love this song unreservedly

I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson - Not actually by U2, actually by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, great song

It's Raining Men - Not actually by U2, actually by the Weather Girls, did this group have any other hits?

Afternoon Delight - Not actually by U2, actually by the Starland Vocal Band, I either know this song from PCU or from Arrested Development or both

the 'batusi' is a solo dance Batman did after he ate a really good empanada. interestingly enough, it was later adapted into a dance for waterface, though they changed the name to 'watusi' as a cute pun on the original.
