A Little Night Music

can you believe there isn't a dedicated sondheim thread on ilx?

i got copies of the taylor movie and the 1990 New York State Theatre recordings. i know the music really well from my mother playing it a lot during my childhood (and then since then - i love the music) but i've never actually seen any production of it. i have a vague memory of seeing a clip from it w/... luanne ponce??? is that possible? google isn't turning anything up.

am i wrong in feeling like this is probably sondheim's most perfect musical work? i feel like half my idiomatic language comes from listening to this.

"later, henrick."

this was the first time i realized someone could be named desiree. (i now know a woman very well w/ that name and bc of that she always reminds me of little night music).

for good reason clowns gets the most love but holy shit if the miller's son is not the most transcendent thing

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 22:03 (nine years ago) link

lol liaisons "i even named her... desiree."

no, but i've been meaning to watch more bergman. should i check it out?

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 22:09 (nine years ago) link

well, yes, it's great. (tho the adaptation is loose)

i believe the 3 live renditions of "Send in the Clowns" i've heard were by

Van Morrison
Stephin Merritt
Bernadette Peters

i haven't heard van morrison's send in the clowns. i'll check that out as well. i generally prefer it as mournful to whimsical.

it's kinda lol considering how much we've bickered on ilx over the years that we're pretty much the only two posters who consistently talk about sondheim (+ other musicals) on ilx. i wonder if in general we share an aesthetic visual affinity, even if not temperamental or political ones.

catherine zeta-jones was in most recent revival?? can she sing?

...i hope PBS broadcasts it

Mordy, Wednesday, 10 September 2014 22:16 (nine years ago) link

judging by Chicago, yes, CZJ can sing. I am not sure Van the Man recorded "Clowns," I heard it live around '84.

(Mordy, i don't think you're an awful person or anything. We both have probably lost our cool at each other unnecessarily.)

In 2014 Ferland played the role of Estelle in HBO's drama The Normal Heart.

^ had no idea

In 2012 Ferland is starring in the Baltimore Center Stage production of Into The Woods as the Baker's Wife.

^ love this bit

The 2009 Broadway revival with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury recorded a cast album on January 4, 2010 which was released on April 6.

In my opinion, Now/Later/Soon is one of Sondheim's very best moments.
