:-) Grew up with this song since my parents had the American Broadway cast recording (and so I don't know anything about Covington's version, but Patti LuPone's is fab). Interesting to see exactly who had done it, and now I want to hear them all! Certain the most detailed take on Tim Rice lyrics I've ever read.

I think Sinead also had an instrumental version of the song on that album too.

I never liked this song at all, Tom, but your writing is a joy to read. I wish I could work out how it is that you capture the essence of a song, performance, line and so on in a way that I can't - I mean, I'm intelligent, articulate, passionate and knowledgeable about music, but I can't do a tenth of what you do here. Terrific article, but I wish it had been on versions of something I love (Dark End Of The Street, Your Precious Love, Stormy Monday, if you're looking for ideas, and you're not).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Gee thanks Martin HEY THOUGH go and read Mike Daddino writing about 50 versions of "Send In The Clowns". He also has a grillion copies of Dark End Of The Street too

it's at http://www.epicharmus.com

Tom (Groke), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

haha I don't much like Send In The Clowns either, but I will check the piece.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 21 October 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

that was bloody great, Tom

You always amaze me, Tom. You pick one of the most horrible, kitschy, absolutely unstandable pieces in the history of music and write something interesting about it. I was very happy that I did not have to listen to the song when reading your piece.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i very happily tried to download the (sinead version of the) song after reading your wunnerful piece. the taste fascists on soulseek (it started out as the filesharer for people who want autechre b-sides, you know)(ie. me) weren't about to have it.

(suprisingly, i got deja vu while typing out that post.)

Tom, that's one of the best things ever on FT. My ex-girlfriend took my Madonna cd-single (I just sent her a link to the article too!) and I was wondering if the Miami Mix you describe has a Spanish-language portion as well? I know there's a version that combines both and it's my favorite part.

"Eloquence, megalomania and neediness"? Somehow I only hear the megalomania. But yay for the rehabilitation of St Sinead.

B:Rad (Brad), Tuesday, 22 October 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a cover of "dont cry..." by mike flowers pop. It's great because you can dance to it! And Tom, maybe you didn't like nacha guevara's version because.....everything she does sucks, mainly.

I'd argue that this is the only song Lloyd-Webber and Rice have done that has become a standard - Memories surely is too. (I'd like to think Benjamin Calypso too but that is merely wishful thinking). Nevertheless a great piece, and when I had a conversation about this last week with another friend she was saying that the Sinead version was the best too so its nice to see there is a bit of consensus.

three weeks pass...
C´mon Tom, this poor vision of Latinoamerica ( " In the context of Latin America an authoritarian populist is surely preferable to the endless parade of Generals" ) isn´t very smart. Pure "born in the USA" knowledge.

We had better democratic presidents here in Argentina than your last 10 presidents (you can exclude some months of Clinton mandate ;). ok, we hat Fascist as Peron (don´t be afraid to called him ´fascist´)and murders like Videla, but what is a Peron compare with a Bush? . At least, Peron didn´t have sons!. And never got the 0.00001% of the power of the Casa Blanca.

And the song is ....uf! too "gay on the thirties and gettong adult stuff" , as the most of Broadway stuff.

Marcos, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom is not American, Marcos.

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh! Sorry!

well.... remplace Tatcher were say Bush :)))

Marcos, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I am not-smart when it comes to Latin American history but was it not the case that when Peron came to power any kind of popular mandate was the exception not the rule - i.e. Peron in the context of the last 20 years or so looks a lot worse than in the context of his own time? Or maybe I'm completely wrong.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Peron was a fascist. His "popular" part come from demagagogy. At the time he took the power, Argentina was a rich country (in the LA context)and he and Eva just spent that wealth as if they were Elton John in his worse day...

He put his political enemies in jail and controled the Media and the schools text. (The children learned to write with things like "Eva loves children"!).

His dream was converted himself in the latinoamerican part of the Nazi machine (don´t forget all the nazis generals run away to here in 1945, where they were welcome and protected) .

But , well, let´s talk about music... "don´t cry for me Argentina" is a fantasy, a badly fantasy. Maybe if that song called "don´t cry for me Kuala Lumpur" maybe i would think it is wonderfull ;)).

The politics turn ugly all the art....

And , once again, sorry about the confusion , i imagine you´re english. (don´t cry for me, Lady Diaaaaana....:-D

two years pass...
Who was the original singer

Noel Williams, Thursday, 17 March 2005 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
me first and the gimme gimmes version of the song really brings out the passion of this piece musically with its melodic power chords and syncopated beats..adding to the songs ongoing diversity within modern popular music subcultures

it is up there with some of my favourite songe of all times...

really gets the hairs on your neck standing up.. enough so.. that i (not being much of a historian) googled the meaning of the song and found this forum..
