is it worth it? what kinda stuff is it? what era is it from?

and the only things i've been able to get my hands on by This Heat are Deceit and Made Available

how's the rest of the stuff. is it worth searching for?

and have any of you heard solo Charles Hayward stuff, or Massacre w/hayward, laswell and someone else?

It's the A-Side of the old 'Health and Efficency' 12", their last release I think. The B-Side of the vinyl had part of the drifty drone stuff that makes up 'Repeat'.

Solo Hayward stuff can be v. patchy - approach w/ caution. The first (only?) Camberwell Now alb is ok, tho'.

Definitely search out their self-titled first album. I like it even a little better than Deceipt. I recently downloaded about 4 CDs worth of other rarities, outtakes and live tracks on Soulseek. I've only listened to a bit of it yet - the 'Health & Efficiency/Repeat' comp of 4 long pieces from singles & EPs, which is very good, if not quite on the level of their albums. There's more extended looping parts and long, pure percussion sections. Also, the long piece with Mario Boyer Diekuuroh from a French magazine cassette release is excellent, more like Deceipt.

Health&Efficiency is a pretty nifty item even if it has been blamed for inventing math-rock and post-rock. Its similiar in style and form to the Deceit album. If you can find it you should get the amazing first untitled This Heat album (sometimes called blue/yellow) and the Camberwell Now records of which there were a few (Geenfingers/ Meridians/ Ghost Trade i think they were called). Massacre was Fred Frith's band and were not that interesting but i haven't heard them with Hayward. As Andrew says his solo albums can be patchy but Skew-Whiff and My Secret Alphabet both have their moments. Has anyone heard him play in Fushitsusha? or Quiet Sun?

To give you an idea of the first album the first three tracks off Made Available are alternative versions of songs from it. i don't know if you can still buy it but if you can't i'd be happy to tape it for you.

Yeah, "Health & Efficiency"--what an incredible song, one of my favorite things from that whole era/scene. The long "groove" section near the end... I played it at the end of a DJ gig some months ago and people bugged out completely.

Here is a URL for a Charles Hayward discography: http://www.squidco.com/rer/Hayward.Charles.html

I don't own any CH records but I've seen him live a couple of times. He was fantastic, both gigs vastly different from each other.

Those 3 inches contain my favourite This Heat stuff. "Health & Efficiency" is the bomb - I love the way it starts as a great noisy pop tune, buckles down into that killer loop and then crumbles into a ghost version of the original melody. And "Repeat", the full 20 minutes of "24 Track Loop" from the first album, is really powerful stuff - like a hyper-tense electric Miles loop in dub. An amazing band (you definitely want the debut album too, JD).

I saw Charles Hayward play at the Gareth Williams tribute concert earlier this year - he's one of the most frightening men I've ever seen on stage. He stares the crowd out with a face that looks like one of those Easter Island statues (brrrr). There's a good interview with him here: http://www.furious.com/perfect/charleshayward.html

My mate tells me Quiet Sun are pretty duff, and I trust him on these things.
