8 Mile is the dividing line between the haves and the have nots.

That quote works well as a catch phrase, but I know people who live in Detroit mansions, and I know people who live in Royal Oak and Ferndale shitboxes. While it's true that certain stretches of 8 Mile have very different views from left to right, there are just as many stretches where both sides are beat down.
Don't get me wrong -- there is much more wealth outside of Detroit than there is inside it (and it's getting more and more dangerous to be a kid growing up in Detroit). However, the idea that there is this magic line dividing rich from poor is a fallacy.

I think that fucking L Brooks Paterson, the Oakland county commish, had a lot to do with it as well. In the 10+ years that he and Young were both in office, they didn't meet once. Basically the feelings were mutual.
(and I hate to disagree with Andy, but crossing 8 Mile on Woodward is still one of the most jarring experiences I can imagine... AND I like "Lose Yourself" as well... and I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie...zzzzzzz)
