Although the band in question is probably not very well-known here: from Roadrunner and confirmed by a few Canadian sources:

Steve MacDonald, drummer for the long-running Canadian death metal act GORGUTS, reportedly hung himself a couple of days ago after battling depression for the last few years. An official statement from the rest of the group is expected by the end of the week.

A great loss, this band was really onto something with their crazy dissonance-fests.

Jesus Christ, Siegbran, ID the band next time in the headers of these! I thought you meant S. Macdonald of Redd Kross.

(That said -- obviously tragic news. Reminds me of what happened to Chris Acland of Lush.)

This is truly horrible news. Gorguts are one of the most creative & forward-thinking bands not only in death metal but in any genre. That's two terrible losses in the space of a year for one of my favorite styles of music -- requiescas in pace Mr McDonald :(
