Records that begat other records...this includes blatant tune theft ("Taxman"/"Start", say), dis tunes that elicited dis responses ("No Scrubs"/"No Pigeons") and records that inspired other artists to scale new heights on account of their inherent greatness...

...I'm thinking of the whole Revolver/Pet Sounds/Sgt Pepper thingy here.

Ideas?

Maybe steer clear of rilly obv steals, cos, well, they're rilly obv...unless they're "tributes" of course (cf. Tocotronic's "Let There Be Rock"/Europe's "The Final Countdown"!)

Without the third VU album, there would have been no Galaxie 500. Slowcore would, as a result, be a lot gothier.

Nice. And on a slightly more tangential note, without Adorable's Against Perfection there would be no Radiohead's The Bands...FITE!

Someone once offered me the theory that without the Clash's 'Lost in the Supermarket' there would be no Pulp.

without 'zen arcade' by husker du, there'd be no 'dookie' by green day. gd picks up the 'fucked-up teenager as concept album' slack left by the huskers ten years earlier. and they're not a million miles away from the same musical terrain the huskers inhabited either (though perhaps not 'zen arcade' so much - i'm thinking more latter-day huskers).

no zen arcade= no emo= no 'trolls'

Without Phil Collins there'd be no REM; if you want the proof: Finest Worksong = '80s Genesis, Everbody Hurts = '90s Phil Collins.

Slowcore would, as a result, be a lot gothier.

This is bad how? ;-)

without ozzie nelson, swing band leader and tv star, we would've never had ricky nelson, 50's teen idol, and we would've never had nelson, singing "after the rain" over and over again in tight leather pants...

three generations of #1 hits.

ugh,
m.
