What should I find on my trip to buy milk but "X-Ray", a new music monthly released as an XFM tie-in/brand extension (the free CD is mostly XFM sessions). It looks bad and reads worse - very much positioning itself in the same "new rock and roll" (with token hip-hop and dance) territory the NME and CTCL are occupying. Actually I wondered if the apparent viability of CTCL had encouraged these people to start up (there's a big feature on "Brighton Rocks!" so they're near-literally treading on Jerry's toes!). Anyone else seen it? Any thoughts?

"X-Ray is about passion"

i.e. "Here we go again."

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Thing is, say what you want about the NME or CTCL, but neither are in any way shape or form associated with:

My likes? 2001 Model Behaviour champion Jenny Richards, Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, "Pleasant Valley Sunday", and that's about it.

From my weblog last week:

X-Ray

London based radio station Xfm are launching their branded X-Ray magazine onto the newsstand (October 24th) with a price tag of £2.50. It will be a monthly title.

It comes with a free CD that includes exclusive Xfm sessions, unfortunately this means the we get the likes of "Coldplay Karaoke" from the awful: Aqualung and bog standard dull garage rawk from: The Hives.

The content is typical high profile established/artists: The Streets/ Foo Fighters/Flaming Lips/Death in Vegas/Primal Scream. [i.e it's preaching to the converted (the same market as the NME), and looks unlikely to offer anything new/ different/unusual/leftfield/extreme/experimental - I give it upto 12 months before it will fold]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

you bought it then, Tom?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

X-Ray has been going for a while, I think, though it may only just have started appearing in shops. It reminds me of the horrible pointless magazines that mobile phone companies and banks send you to encourage you to "establish a relationship with the brand".

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

yep, but this is the first pay for it issue - available in shops.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I did, I always give new mags a chance, just to see who theyve got writing for them.

Things I've learned so far that interest me:

- City Rockers has had the plug pulled on it financially.
- The XL release of "Danger! High Voltage!" has been put back to January.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

There is also a new London based style mag I saw yesterday - that had Jarvis Cocker on the front. Can't remember the name though.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

another new magazine on the way:

Project Satisfaction

MediaGuardian.co.uk report that former EMAP executives David Hepworth & Mark Ellen have started a new company Development Hell. Their first publishing launch will be monthly men's glossy:

The forthcoming title, known as Project Satisfaction, will launch early next year.

The magic formula Development Hell hopes will attract readers includes music, books, movies, digital and wireless technology but "not girls in their pants" and "not celebs".

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

> There is also a new London based style mag I saw yesterday

that'll be snug. happened to read about it earlier today over here whilst looking for some info on that lost Pulp-song that seems to have appeared out of nowhere as a downloade over at amazon

jg, Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

jg, cheers that the strange name of the mag: Snug !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

In men's mags "not girls in their pants" usually equates to long uncritical features on Paul Weller, the history of the British caper movie and "the 200 things you should have done before you were 30" -- and then back to "girls in their pants" when the sales figures come in.

Yes/No Interlude (Yes/No Interlude), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I noticed "Snug" on the stands today - it seems to be about pubs, hence the name (a snug is a cosy private room in a pub, Americans). Bizarre.

According to Mediaweek, Emap are supposed to be launching two new rock (as in Nu Metal) titles soon, because they're too stupid to see that Kerrrang have already cornered the market.

Leo Lonergan (Leo), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone know who did the remix of Danger High Voltage? Sort of techno/electro, Jacques Lu Cont played it when I saw him.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Emap are supposed to be launching two new rock (as in Nu Metal) titles soon, because they're too stupid to see that Kerrrang have already cornered the market.

You surely mean IPC ? and NOT Emap are supposed to be launching two new rock titles...

Kerrang is an EMAP Title. IPC currently have Muzik (dance) NME (weekly) and Uncut (retro-ish Monthly) - so considering Kerrang have an increasinging circulation - maybe an IPC rock/metal MONTHLY/ or FORTNIGHTLY title aimed as a competitor to Kerrang could be feasible?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Just seen the news article @ Mediaweek.co.uk it is IPC Ignite.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Whose is Rock Sound?

Is this X-Ray mag available outside London? It sounds rubbish but I am bored and in need of exercise so it'd be a good excuse for a walk to the newsagent to stare at the cover.

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but you'd be better going for a brisk walk up a mountain.

The CD is unbelievably poor, even if it's a 'freebie', with even reliables like Playgroup and the Flaming Lips sounding very ordinary. I actually liked the Libertines track despite their hype (although it only gets 2 stars in the mag), it's like a camp Supergrass. Billy Childish is about as bad as I imagined he would be, but he does get bonus points for wearing a deerstalker, and the Hives sound as though they're trying to put people off their records with a wilfully feeble performance. you know you're in trouble when about the best thing on it is Zero 7.

As for the magazine, will read it properly later but a cursory glance shows that there is nothing too surprising (good or bad) in it. I was hoping for the quirkiness of Select but seems more like a pale clone of the NME.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock Sound is IXO Publishing.

Re: X-Ray,

Rebecca, how are we supposed to know what your local Oxon newsagent stocks ;)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, I just meant, "Is it a proper national magazine or is it intended as an XFM tie-in that they won't bother distributing in places that don't get the station?" Of course you are not necessarily expected to know the answer to that either. But I don't want to have to hear that dreadful Flaming Lips "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" cover ever again so I don't think I'll bother.

(Oxfordshire doesn't do mountains. Or proper hills. I'll find a pebble to stand on later.)

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

to be pedantic, Rebecca, the *whole country* gets XFM - you just have to have Sky Digital (it's somewhere among the radio channels). only thing I've ever bothered to listen to on there is the All City Hip-Hop Show.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, didn't realise that, largely because I don't have Sky Digital. Cheers.

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

[also if you buy a dab radio it is available in Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, South Yorks, Cardiff/Newport, Tyne & Wear, Bristol, Wolverhampton, Bath and ofcourse London. Sorry no Oxfordshire yet, Rebecca.]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

As Robin sez Sky Digital - 864.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey - the LRB has a free cd this week too! It is, apparently, "an artistic monument to the defining moment of 9/11 and a technological demonstration of the twin powers of radio art and liberated broadcasting". Eek!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't forget the modern interweb, DJM.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigh. Fuck it. Buy The Organ

It's my mag, we've been doing it as a full-time job for 16 years, people actually buy it because they like it and it's helps you find music for yourself, we don't want to be the new nme, we just need to tell people about the bands that people actually care about, its only a quid, please subscribe and help feed our cat.

(getting straight to the point).

oops.

Marinaorgan (Marina Organ), Friday, 25 October 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I did buy a couple of issues of The Organ years ago but I've not seen one for ages. I'm glad it's still going, I'll pick one up next time I see one.

(Marina might I suggest a new first issue with gold-embossed alternate covers to get more readers??)

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 26 October 2002 08:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I bought X-Ray. The CD is just not my cup of tea. The article on Garage Rock doesn't mention the mummies! But I do like the size!

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 26 October 2002 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The A5 size could be a winner, as 20something women's mag Glamour (also A5) has been a massive success.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 26 October 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

(Marina might I suggest a new first issue with gold-embossed alternate covers to get more readers??)

oooh, been there done that, Tom... ok, the gold was really spray paint. Or was the that before your time?
I'm glad we dont have to do that any more. We've got several nice full colour pages to play with now, so no more choking on xylene fumes and aerosol can thumb. More space for articles too...

Hey, what's the next London gig you're going to? I'll look out for you. I've not met too many live ILMers yet.

Marinaorgan (Marina Organ), Saturday, 26 October 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
Was there ever a second issue of X-Ray?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:14 (twenty-three years ago)

due february 20th-ish, thereafter it will be monthly.

Good Music mag to bloom in spring

Good Music - described by publisher John Rollins as "a music magazine for grownups" - will roll with its first issue next spring.

Rollins, founding publisher of Vibe, and Alan Light, editor in chief of sister mag Spin until he resigned early this year to focus on the Manhattan-based startup, have lined up initial funding to launch it as a quarterly.

"Later, we hope to go monthly," Rollins said.

He believes Good Music, still a tentative name, has "wide open space" in the market since Rolling Stone unveiled its redesign, which seeks to hook younger readers with more provocative, flesh-baring covers.

Good Music Media LLC, which registered in New York State early this year, plans to target readers 30 and up.
