X-Ray
London based radio station Xfm are launching their branded X-Ray magazine onto the newsstand (October 24th) with a price tag of £2.50. It will be a monthly title.
It comes with a free CD that includes exclusive Xfm sessions, unfortunately this means the we get the likes of "Coldplay Karaoke" from the awful: Aqualung and bog standard dull garage rawk from: The Hives.
The content is typical high profile established/artists: The Streets/ Foo Fighters/Flaming Lips/Death in Vegas/Primal Scream. [i.e it's preaching to the converted (the same market as the NME), and looks unlikely to offer anything new/ different/unusual/leftfield/extreme/experimental - I give it upto 12 months before it will fold]

Things I've learned so far that interest me:
- City Rockers has had the plug pulled on it financially.- The XL release of "Danger! High Voltage!" has been put back to January.

Project Satisfaction
MediaGuardian.co.uk report that former EMAP executives David Hepworth & Mark Ellen have started a new company Development Hell. Their first publishing launch will be monthly men's glossy:
The forthcoming title, known as Project Satisfaction, will launch early next year.
The magic formula Development Hell hopes will attract readers includes music, books, movies, digital and wireless technology but "not girls in their pants" and "not celebs".

According to Mediaweek, Emap are supposed to be launching two new rock (as in Nu Metal) titles soon, because they're too stupid to see that Kerrrang have already cornered the market.

You surely mean IPC ? and NOT Emap are supposed to be launching two new rock titles...
Kerrang is an EMAP Title. IPC currently have Muzik (dance) NME (weekly) and Uncut (retro-ish Monthly) - so considering Kerrang have an increasinging circulation - maybe an IPC rock/metal MONTHLY/ or FORTNIGHTLY title aimed as a competitor to Kerrang could be feasible?

Is this X-Ray mag available outside London? It sounds rubbish but I am bored and in need of exercise so it'd be a good excuse for a walk to the newsagent to stare at the cover.

The CD is unbelievably poor, even if it's a 'freebie', with even reliables like Playgroup and the Flaming Lips sounding very ordinary. I actually liked the Libertines track despite their hype (although it only gets 2 stars in the mag), it's like a camp Supergrass. Billy Childish is about as bad as I imagined he would be, but he does get bonus points for wearing a deerstalker, and the Hives sound as though they're trying to put people off their records with a wilfully feeble performance. you know you're in trouble when about the best thing on it is Zero 7.
As for the magazine, will read it properly later but a cursory glance shows that there is nothing too surprising (good or bad) in it. I was hoping for the quirkiness of Select but seems more like a pale clone of the NME.

It's my mag, we've been doing it as a full-time job for 16 years, people actually buy it because they like it and it's helps you find music for yourself, we don't want to be the new nme, we just need to tell people about the bands that people actually care about, its only a quid, please subscribe and help feed our cat.
(getting straight to the point).

oooh, been there done that, Tom... ok, the gold was really spray paint. Or was the that before your time? I'm glad we dont have to do that any more. We've got several nice full colour pages to play with now, so no more choking on xylene fumes and aerosol can thumb. More space for articles too...
Hey, what's the next London gig you're going to? I'll look out for you. I've not met too many live ILMers yet.

Rollins, founding publisher of Vibe, and Alan Light, editor in chief of sister mag Spin until he resigned early this year to focus on the Manhattan-based startup, have lined up initial funding to launch it as a quarterly.
"Later, we hope to go monthly," Rollins said.
He believes Good Music, still a tentative name, has "wide open space" in the market since Rolling Stone unveiled its redesign, which seeks to hook younger readers with more provocative, flesh-baring covers.
Good Music Media LLC, which registered in New York State early this year, plans to target readers 30 and up.
