One of my favorite profs from university has a blog in which he's trying to listen to his entire discography in a year, the writing's flat as hell but I don't know if I should post it here

I should post up the liner notes to the 5 CD-R anthology a guy I know made. In his opinion, Dylan's work (at that time, it's a number of years old) falls into 5 distinct eras.

That Sly Stone blurb is horrifying.

The Beatles were famously influenced by Dylan during the “Rubber Soul” sessions, but you can also hear him hanging over the nonsense lyrics and highbrow snottiness of Lennon’s “Happiness Is a Warm Gun” from the “White Album.” The nod to Bob, though, also emphasizes the really-not-Bob bits — the psychedelic proto-metal heaviness, the actual willingness to do some songwriting, rather than just having one idea and wandering on with it till the track ran out. And of course, the fact that the person singing can actually sing.

Is "Don't think twice" "misogynistic" as the sly stone blurb claims, or is it just a song about callousness during the dissolution of a relationship that may have meant more to one party than the other?

I feel like a song like that, which is so particular and well observed, should be differentiated from like honkey tonk women or something

Treeship, Thursday, 6 November 2014 22:19 (nine years ago) link

Anyway, doesn't matter i guess because the authoritative incurious tone of that salon piece is poison.

Yeah, I wrote a Dylan piece today and my starting point was "How do I make this NOT sound like overwrought hackwork?"

These strengths, though, were accompanied by real weaknesses.
