I have no suggestions here as of yet, but this does pose an interesting question: if you have a wishlist of things that you REALLY WANT and a gift certificate, do you put off buying the good stuff so that you can buy something you wouldn't ordinarily buy with the gift certificate, simply because it's "free money" and therefore the risk is minimized? I know I sometimes do that.

What're ya looking for?

See, my current faves being Kevin Drumm, Sheer Hellish Miasma and To Live and Shave in L.A., The Wigmaker in 18th Century Williamsburg, I know they're not exactly for everyone.

absolutely sean. because its "free money" its good for anything. With "real money" I would buy the good shit.

You're excused. Well, pick up one of those Kompakt comps and discover microhouse.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

New Pornographers - Mass Romantic,
Neko Case - Blacklisted,
Teenage Fanclub was on special at the Virgin in Boston (Grand Prix and Bandwagonesque as part of a 3 for 15 dollar promotion).
Mean Red Spiders - StarsandSons
Depending on where the gift certificate is for of course.

Mean Red Spiders

Ha. Saw them play to like two people the other night.

Ditto Ned's Kompakt recommendation
A Certain Ratio's Early and/or ESG's A Bronx Story
Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock
Completely ignoring the 2,349 posts on the thread, the new Beck album
On the more noisy side, the new Black Dice on DFA

These are all both good records AND if you don't like them you'll still impress your friends by owning them!

Good albums this year by Beachwood Sparks, My Computer, Low, Boa Morte. You should def take advantage of that Teenage Fanclub offer, though.

Did you get it yet?
well if not, or maybe for the next gift cert. definately get
Remy Shand - The Way I Feel

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 23 October 2002 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried to find some of these cd's but to no avail. Remy Shand is arriving via burnt copy from a friend. I ended up buying The Streets and Wilco. After listening to the Streets I wanted to smash the cd into one million pieces. Its not for me at all. Wilco I like. What is the appeal with the Streets? I don't see anything remotely good about it at all.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris V. and Dan have the Boston hate going for the Streets now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

haha it's physically impossible to like both Wilco and ver Streets, Chris!* haven't you been reading ILM lately?

*Michael Bourke = honourable exception to this rule

I hope for your sake, that when you say "burnt" here you actually do mean it quite literally.
