Songs that Make You Laugh

Not novelty tunes or "So Bad It's Good" necessarily, but tunes to which you react with helpless hilarity. Inspired by the fact that the freakin' "Ketchup Song" snuck up on me last night and left me giggling. I wasn't thinking "Oh, God, this sucks so hard" either -- more overwhelmed by the sheer joyful ridiculousness of it all.

So what's the last song that left you laughing?

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

'United States Of Whatever' by Liam Lynch all the way

its usually just a bit in a song tho - i used to laugh whenever Jarvis bitterly sniped 'cos you're so bleedin' thick!' in 'Mis-Shapes'

i think 'Rabbit' by Chas n Dave is funny too

and obv there's loads of funny hip hop lyrics - Eminem blah blah

Scooter!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Flash by Green Velvet.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)

the Destiny's Child version of Emotion managed to make a room full of people giggle/smirk a lot the other day once Beyonce went into full vocal gymnastics silliness.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not a song so much, but i saw a copy of an Audioweb record in a 2nd hand shop recently, and burst out laughing. Just the fact that Audioweb existed, and someone thought their record was worth getting, amused me greatly.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I like 'What a Waster' by the Libertines, especially the bit where the singer goes "what a divvy, what a fucking div".

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

"Frankly Mr.Shankly" by the Smiths made me laugh when I first heard it. The bit about "bloody awful poetry". I don't laugh aloud at music, much, I've gotta say. Prob because I listen to slo-core a lot. When I saw Sporty Spice's first show at V99 a while back, I laughed quite a bit.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I wondered who liked that Liam Lynch horror!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 24 October 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hersham Boys, Hersham Boys
They call us the Cockney cowboys"

Had anyone really ever called you that Mr Pursey (before you wrote that alleged "song" I mean); and what led them to believe that you can hear the sounds of Bow Bells from 25 miles away, out WEST of London in the leafy suburbs of Surrey?

On this basis, by my reckoning, half the population of Berks, Herts, Essex and Kent must all be bleedin' Cockneys too.

Gaw blimey guvnor, you wot? Stone the crows, as it 'appens, knock it on the 'ead

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Jonathon King called him it 'round the back of the youth club one saturday night.

53@N, Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaah yes, Jonathon King:
"Here comes Johnny Reggae,
Reggae Reggae Reggae"
That one always makes me want to laugh - specifically it makes me want to laugh at Jonathon King, writhing in agony....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

10cc - Dreadlock Holiday. Especially the JA cover version...

Sue Wilkinson.

"More weed"

Jacob, Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Planxty Noel hill by the Pogues. Bonus points for being a funny instrumental.

Some bootlegs obv. Evolution Control Committee's PE/Herb Alpert cut up for starters.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 24 October 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Defender by Manowar is the funniest song ever.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In general, Jonathon Richmond, specifically, Roller Coaster By the Sea and Tag Game are good for some fun.

Some folks may consider Ween to be a novelty act, i don't, and Mister Richard Smoker is one tune that makes me giggle like a little school girl.

Brinx Job by Pavement always gives me a little rise as i imagine playing it once my "lottery ship" comes in.

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

A rather sensible answer, but Tom Lehrer (still) has the capacity to make me laugh aloud.

Daniel (dancity), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The Would-be-Goods' The Camera Loves Me - the whole album for that matter.

Jez (Jez), Thursday, 24 October 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

After reading The Manual, listening to Doctorin' The Tardis is pretty funny. Looking at Ford Timelord on the cover is even better.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

"(What) If Boys Got Pregnant" by the Orchids

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything by Don Lennon, especially "My Debut Album." Got to see him live for the first time last week and it was a joy to behold.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Thursday, 24 October 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Most anything by the Squirrels, bless their hearts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 October 2002 16:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes to the Hersham Cockney thing. Flabbergasting, really.

Other punk and post punk stuff was suprisingly full of genuinely witty stuff, rather than embarrassing fluffs like that one:

The early Buzzcocks are full of funnies, Pete Shelley is/was a 'punk' Oscar Wilde if ever there was one. Orgasm Addict, especially where he 'comes'; most of the very clever lyric to 'Time's Up'; the 'bdum bdum' pun in 'Boredom'.

Indeed this kind of righteous, slightly camp wit-driven-by-fury can be found in the Pistols, the Stranglers, the Damned, ATV and others.

The Dead Kennedys brand of humour is a bit more po-faced, but I always enjoyed the suede-denim secret police coming for his uncool neice.

A little more recently, The bit in Morrissey's Suedehead b side where he says 'this is the last song I shall ever sing *cheer* - oh no I've changed my mind again *boo* - goodnight, and thank you' always raises a chuckle.
And the Associate's Remix album has some bass solos by John Dempsey that really crack me up - yes, even bass lines can be funny.

Finally in China I have heard:
- the Dragon's version of Anarchy in the UK
- A Cantonese version of that drinking song 'Land Down Under'
- and an instrumental version of Blue Monday designed for teaching people the two-step.

Only the first of these is meant to be funny.

jon (jon), Thursday, 24 October 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I laugh a lot whenever I like anything, especially music, ESPECIALLY at live shows. The Flaming Lips, this week, had me rolling in the isles.

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Thursday, 24 October 2002 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

The first Ol' Dirty album, all the way through (except for a couple of scary ones like "Snakes" -no, even that's funny, when ODB goes "sometimes when I get high with the meth..." and starts gibbering and freaking out)
ALso, Crusin' in the ATL by Outkast always makes me laugh a lot.

Conor (Conor), Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"Peking O" by Can always makes me smile

ejad, Thursday, 24 October 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"Two years ago I was a four stone apology. Today, I am two seperate gorillas."

Chriddof (Chriddof), Thursday, 24 October 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I can only think of two songs that, without fail, make me laugh aloud:
Sun City Girls: "Soi Cowboy"
Ween: "Right to the Ways and the Rules of the World"

Ernest P., Thursday, 24 October 2002 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"He Likes Me" and "Girl Trouble" off the Violent Femmes' WHY DO BIRDS SING? still crack me up every dang time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 24 October 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi...especially that last chorus.

Fergal Anthony James O'Reilly (Ferg), Thursday, 24 October 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

There have been a few out of character covers that have made me laugh, especially if they were by either Killdozer "Take the Money & Run" or the Revolting Cocks "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy".

"Moving to Florida" by the Butthole Surfers is a funny song.

earlnash, Thursday, 24 October 2002 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing on the awful new cex album which i suppose was meant to be funny. the barking on 'poodle rocking' makes me laugh.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 24 October 2002 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton"!!

A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Thursday, 24 October 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

FUNNIEST SONG OF ALL TIME: 'Moulty' by the Barbarians (from Nuggets)

and booty bass

Keith McD (Keith McD), Friday, 25 October 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Most Moog Cookbook covers are funny enough to make me laugh out loud (on the first hearing at very least.) Best part of this - it's done without words!

Kim (Kim), Friday, 25 October 2002 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, but..."Too Much Brandy", the whole "Far gone on one, call me Baron Von Marlon, One has a monocle and cigar, Dickie-bow and long johns" bit especially.

Charlie (Charlie), Friday, 25 October 2002 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

cecilia, Friday, 25 October 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

the bit in "I Didn't Know I was Asleep" by Plush where his voice breaks and he laughs always makes me chuckle

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 25 October 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Still Fly by The Big Tymers.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 25 October 2002 03:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't Laugh - Josh Wink

Most comic couplets by Half Man Half Biscuit were profound in there philosophical accuracy, deserving a thread all of their own.

Macattack (Macattack), Friday, 25 October 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

jarvis, again:
'i can't see anyone else smiling here' (on 'common people').

and momus:
'i want you, but i don't need you'

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 25 October 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything by The Vines has me rolling about in laughter. How can a band be so bad?

Callum (Callum), Friday, 25 October 2002 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of Pulp lines ("The trouble with your brother / He's always sleeping with your mother / And I hear that your sister missed her time again this month").

Funniest performer: Reverend Billy C. Wirtz.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 26 October 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Frankly Mr. Shankley

Made me laugh, but I still think it's the best song on the album.

David Allen, Saturday, 26 October 2002 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Beck has some very funny songs, such as "Mexico", "Satan Gave Me a Taco", and "MTV Makes Me Wanna Smoke Crack".

Fishbone's "Housework" makes me laugh, not because it's funny, but because it's so fun. Same for Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Magic Johnson".

Nickalicious, Monday, 4 November 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The transition from "Clip the Apex...Accept Instruction" to "Calculating Infinity" on Dillinger Escape Plan's
Calculating Infinity album.

It makes me laugh and also dance in a really strange way. There are no words, just a really incredibly funny scene change.

meirion john lewis (mei), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

after watching this I couldn't listen to Pavarotti without laughing: http://www.rathergood.com/elephants/
