Bands we can all agree to hate, or like.

Usually, in a thread, if every single person likes a band, one person jumps in to say they're overrated. Same with hate, one person jumps in to say they're misunderstood.

Any one band that has no hatters, or one band that we can all agree has absolutely zero redemable qualities?

David Allen, Saturday, 26 October 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Starsailor?

Callum (Callum), Saturday, 26 October 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

S Club Juniors. Please don't tell me I'm wrong. Or I may just drown in a sea of po-faced contrariness.

darren, Saturday, 26 October 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont hate Starsailor, i dont like S Club Juniors

blueski, Saturday, 26 October 2002 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

no-one on this board likes the Stereophonics maybe? or indeed Oasis? at least not these days

blueski, Saturday, 26 October 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Killing Joke.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 26 October 2002 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

We've done this before, I think, and I don't think everyone could agree on anythign.

I'm pretty sure there are people who will stick up for Oasis, although Stereophonics is probably a good call. Them, Celine Dion and Westlife.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 26 October 2002 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

done this one before. stereophonics was the one that I can't remember anyone sticking up for (apart from toby (I think, and sorry if this is wrong) who liked 'man in the photograph').

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 26 October 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm pretty sure there are people who will stick up for Oasis

Quite right.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 26 October 2002 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

after thinking about it for a min. or two, i'd be surprised if there are many people (any people?) who straight up hate the talking heads...

ko hsüan, Saturday, 26 October 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

the talking homos you mean..

mitch "troublemaker without a cause" lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 26 October 2002 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

(before anyone thinks otherwise, i must clarify that i really like the talking heads.)

mitch "..don't get the wrong idea" lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 26 October 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i think kris hates them tho...

mitch "third time lucky" lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Saturday, 26 October 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Who hates: The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Cure, The Velvet Underground, Duke Ellington, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, T. Rex, My Bloody Valentine, Elvis, Chuck Berry,

Who likes: Kenny G, Barenaked Ladies, Tim McGraw, Billy Ray Cyrus,

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 26 October 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

talking heads are highly overrated. the first two lps being ok, the third sketchy and the rest the bottom of the barrel. If I took Byrne down to the river I would hold his head under the water till he turned blue.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 26 October 2002 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Anthony and/or Tracer may stick up for Tim McGraw based on last single. I'll stick up for Barenaked Ladies in that they've certainly had their moments and are nowhere near as mind-numbingly awful as Moxy Fruvous (but I'm sure someone here will even stick up for Fruvous).

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 26 October 2002 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I fucking hate the Cure, mainly on account of them switching from shit alterno-pop to shit 80s tedio-rock, and the fact that people fell for it.

Barenaked Ladies are actual great, especially "Shoe Box", "I'll Be That Girl", "Who Needs Sleep?", and, of course, "If I Had A Million Dollars..."

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 26 October 2002 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean, I don't actively despise The Drinking Song. If that qualifies as "sticking up for".

Kim (Kim), Saturday, 26 October 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I will quite happily diss the Beach Boys and The Cure.

Who is Tim McGraw?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 26 October 2002 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Simply Red?

Underclocked, Sunday, 27 October 2002 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone dislike Devo?

Dave Fischer, Sunday, 27 October 2002 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone like Creed? I seriously can't think of anything good about them.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 27 October 2002 03:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Could anyone possibly defend "popera" superstar Russell Watson?

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Sunday, 27 October 2002 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently the producers of Enterprise think they can....

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 27 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

What, is he the guy singing the theme song? I've heard enough about that to know never to even accidentally encounter it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 October 2002 15:56 (twenty-three years ago)

You mean that's not Bon Jovi?

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And on the subject of shite theme tunes - anyone for Remy Zero?

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I dare anyone to stand up for Tommy Lee/Methods Of Mayhem.

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I like that Tim McGraw cover that Will Oldham does, so y'know, he has his uses... But if we're talking modern country, anyone who likes LeeAnn Rimes (esp. her new rec which I've had the misfortune to hear) they're out of their cotton-pickin' mind...

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Um... "cotton-pickin'"? You might want to think about that one.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Kim (and everyone else) I'm sorry if that's an offensive phrase - really didn't think/know - I prob. got it from Marvel comics or something - I won't use it again...

Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

For the record, I wasn't offended. I think it's one that a LOT of people still use very innocently just because they've never had the occasion to think of it's origins. :)

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 27 October 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'scuse typos

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 27 October 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I'm totally with you re: Rimes.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 27 October 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. No, seriously. I'm 15. I'm allowed.

Callum (Callum), Sunday, 27 October 2002 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Trust me, Callum, I feel that way about those two bands a lot of the time too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 October 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Hating The Beatles and The Rolling Stones = much safer these days than hating, say, The Sex Pistols or The Talking Heads, as the boomers are slowly but surely fading from view.

Daniel_Rf, Sunday, 27 October 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Creed is a safe bet. Anyone caught defending them here would most likely be tarred, feathered and run out of town on a proverbial rail.

I love Devo.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 27 October 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Except for "Psycho Killer" and "Don't Worry About the Government", which are OK, I hate Talking Heads '77. Not crazy for other stuff I've heard by them.

sundar subramanian, Sunday, 27 October 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone willing to stand up for Rick Astley?

If you even know who he is...it took me 15 min. to even remember what that guy's name was....

webcrack (music=crack), Monday, 28 October 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i would take a bullet for rick.

minna (minna), Monday, 28 October 2002 01:03 (twenty-three years ago)

'together forever' is great!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 October 2002 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Westlife were irredeemable and had no use on this earth til "World Of Our Own". Now? Well, they gave us "World Of Our Own". By the skin of their teeth, then.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 28 October 2002 01:06 (twenty-three years ago)

1. If you stop saying "cotton-pickin" because you're afraid of offending people, you are a pussy.

2. Puddle of Mudd. Honestly.

David Allen, Monday, 28 October 2002 01:07 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone who posts on an internet message board is a pussy (but i find that word offensive and don't normally use it)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 28 October 2002 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

*purr*

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 28 October 2002 01:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Who hates:
The Rolling Stones - Haven't done anything relevant in 2 decades.
The Beatles - the examplar of overrated
The Cure - Terrible singer with fruity lyrics. I love them.
The Velvet Underground - Love them in spite of themselves
Duke Ellington - More of a Louis Armstrong man myself.
Simon & Garfunkel - yaaaawnnn.
The Beach Boys - yaaaaaaaawwwwn. zzzzzzzzzz.
T. Rex - zzzzzzzzzzzz
My Bloody Valentine - (Custos is loudly awoken by a harsh screech of supple beauty) aaaaaaaaaah!
Elvis - So much potential, wasted
Chuck Berry - Like his music, but refuse to use the mens room in his restaraunt.

Who likes:
Kenny G - ack!
Barenaked Ladies - overrated
Tim McGraw - indifferent
Billy Ray Cyrus - As awful as he is, he's still not as bad as Steve Wariner. He's the Barry Manilow of modern neo-Countripolitan.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

i step forward and admit my hatred of the velvet underground.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 28 October 2002 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

nobody said 'dud' on my plastic bertrand classic or dud thread... will anyone say it now?

minna (minna), Monday, 28 October 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard anyone ever say one bad word about the Kinks.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 28 October 2002 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we all agree to like Giorgio Moroder? Not only is he a swankass producer, I've just heard some of his solo stuff ("Tears", "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone") and it's everything Daft Punk wishes they were (and actually are 90% of the time but that's beside the point).

Creed are okay for WWE tribute video package background music (i.e. Jeff Hardy falling through big stacks of tables) but they have no other purpose whatsoever.

And the Kinks are one of the best singles acts ever.

Nate Patrin, Monday, 28 October 2002 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"World Of Our Own"

"TOOK FOR GRANTED EVERYTHING WE HAD..." That's what does it for you, admit it.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 28 October 2002 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I like a couple Stereophonics songs. HATE ME NOW

I think Creed would be the best bet.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 28 October 2002 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Good Charlotte
Tonic
American HiFi
Toby Keith
Coal Chamber
DC Talk
Richard Aschcroft

Wildcat Wendell Cooley, Monday, 28 October 2002 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Creed for indefensable. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about the X-Ray Spex.

Dave Fischer, Monday, 28 October 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Kinks - Overrated
Cure - Dire

Bands to despise: of course the Stereophonics. But how about Linkin Park, Kid Rock, R Kelly.

Bands to praise to the skies: Television? The Band? And I've seen him dissed but I'm not sure that I believe it - Dylan.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Monday, 28 October 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I would be very interested to see anyone here sticking up for Toby Keith (one for dave q, I think?).

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 28 October 2002 12:26 (twenty-three years ago)

''And I've seen him dissed but I'm not sure that I believe it - Dylan.''

you better believe it roger!

I also think the band sound dull as fuck and television was good but shall not be 'praised to the skies' by me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 28 October 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe no-one's mentioned Phil Collins - surely no-one can find anything positive to say about him (as a solo performer, not as a drummer)?!?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 28 October 2002 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Fing is... what with the googlability, eventually someone will pop up to tell us all to fuck off. Witness previous Toby Keith thread.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 28 October 2002 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil's first solo album is alright. By the close of the 80's, though, he'd become a complete self-parody.

Not that I ever use the phrase "cotton-pickin'" in daily conversation, but I don't think it's offensive at all. It's southern, but not necessarily derived from slavery. My parents picked cotton as youngsters, both of whom (last time I checked, anyway) are as white as they come. Cotton was once the South's chief export, and if you weren't doing something to help with the production, you were hurting the economy.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 28 October 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Without Phil Collins, there would be no ODB version of "Sussudio".

Nate Patrin, Monday, 28 October 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I would be very interested to see anyone here sticking up for Toby Keith (one for dave q, I think?).
For me, at least, its impossible to remember anything he's ever done. He just reminds me of a bad knock-off of Dwight Yoakum. (unless the song I'm hearing in my head isn't Toby Keith, but a different quasi-irrelevant 'Hat Cowboy' from Connecticut with a phony Kentucky accent.)

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Monday, 28 October 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"How about The Eagles .... surely everyone likes The Eagles?"

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i do.

well, 'hotel california' anyway.

anyone hate st etienne?

adam b (adam b), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the name "Toby". A country singer called that misses the point.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer wuvs Toby Keith for that one song, at least, no?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I realize now I've posted twice here and mentioned Tracer sticking up for something. I retract both of those. If T wants to stick up, I'll leave that for T to do. As for me, I hate everything.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

you're in the wrong message board sean. 'I hate everything' is made for you.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

R. Kelly - "I Wish" and of course, "Bump 'n' Grind" are both Classic.

Also, there's nothing wrong/racist with saying "cotton-pickin". As far as I know in the South, the recognized etymology is "work so difficult it is to be derided".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, everyone Southern I know says "cotton-pickin" every now and then, regardless of race. (My wife says it constantly.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

it's just a way to get around saying "fuckin" - i.e. "where's my..." (notices dad standing right there) "COTTON PICKIN cocaine?!"

thank you, sean c - right on both counts - i even like "courtesy of the red white and blue"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

All right then, I guess I stand corrected! I knew someone once who WAS offended by the phrase, so I stopped saying it myself - especially as it did sound questionable once I thought about it. So ok, it's one of those things that means whatever people think it means - so in other words, I'll be shutting up now. :)

On topic - I hate Mariah Carey. The newest one they're playing here (all breathey and squealy and no fun at all - whatever it's called) is absolutely intolerable.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

if Patrick Ewing starts a band he would win easily

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone please find a redeemable quality in Limp Bizkit.

Inversely, someone please find someone who hates Joni Mitchell.

Hating The Beatles and The Rolling Stones = much safer these days than hating, say, The Sex Pistols or The Talking Heads, as the boomers are slowly but surely fading from view.
I quite dislike the Sex Pistols. Maybe I'm too young to see their schtick as shocking? Maybe.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer! You are the most excellent man that has ever lived!

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"I like the name "Toby". A country singer called that misses the point."
Welllll....his real name was Kunta Kinté, but his owners changed it to Toby.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite dislike the Sex Pistols. Maybe I'm too young to see their schtick as shocking? Maybe.
Shocking schmawking...I think they made music that was exciting to listen to. Its fun to sing along with a psychotic Irish hunchback!

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Band were terrible. I suspect the reason no one ever says they hate X-Ray Spex is that most people haven't really heard them, aside from "Oh Bondage Up Yours." It's not like they get much airplay nowadays (or ever?). If you bother to seek them out, it's pretty much a given that you already like shouty female punk stuff.
