Tenacious D - C/D

if you're 20 odd and into american rawk with more empthasis on jokes rather than nickelbacky psuedo-angst then Jack Black and his cronies must be ruling your world right now huh? are they just the new, Bareneaked Ladies for the sk8-punk massive, and is that really a bad thing? 'Wonderboy' is half amusing, half annoying - same goes for 'Tribute to the best song in the world' - and 'Fuck Her Gently' (ok thats just annoying) - the videos are probably better than the songs though (extra points for 'most powerful man in rock' Dave Grohl dressed as Satan) - however i figure most people on here would rather they f.o.a.d'd what with them being axe-wielding americans who like a cackle

i'd say they're classic just for the HBO show; the record's alright, but some of it doesn't really make sense out of the context of that show. plus they wrote it with bob and david from mr. show. all good.

your null fame (yournullfame), Sunday, 27 October 2002 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

They're funny.. it's just a novelty record, I don't think the intention was anything more than that. The show was better than the album, though. I mean, the album is mostly made up of songs that were originally part of the show's plotlines.. without knowing the story behind the songs they must seem strange. They were pretty good live, but yeah.. I don't see why anyone would take them as anything more than what they are, a comedy act. Classic in that sense..

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Sunday, 27 October 2002 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Hideously dud. Jack Black comes across as a fuckwit and I think he's a rubbish actor as well.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 27 October 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i've not seen the show...shame - its unlikely to make it to UK shores i guess...i'll look for rips online sometime

blueski, Monday, 28 October 2002 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

If they're so funny, why aren't their songs even remotely funny? Even good joke songs wear out quickly and have little replay value.. Tenacious D don't even have play value.

The fact that Dave Grohl fits the role of Satan perfectly should be clue enough. Also dud: Kyle's cameo in that stupid Good Charlotte video.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 28 October 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

they are unlistenable even before i care whether they are funny or not (and they're not)

minna (minna), Monday, 28 October 2002 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

you guys are so hopelessly wrong. these guys have their fingers on thepulse of american humor. stop thinking and just LAUGH AT THESE BASTARDS

I saw them once on SNL and it was very funny - but I imagine it was more than enough Tenacious D. I'll ever need

I mean,

Can you imagine the furor and wrath Jack Black must've released on Kyle after the show?

Face to face in the dressing room, Jack's eyes filled with glowing anger, eyebrows arching this way and that as he repeatedly stabs the air between them with staccato blasts of his upraised index finger. That giant maw, hidden for years behind a hermit's beard, now blowing hot fire at his shameful bandmate — née! — former bandmate.

All that because Kyle told a benign one-liner about Trump's ear getting shot. Funniest shit they've done in years.

lol I don't think Black thought about it until people started trying to get him fired from Disney voice acting jobs

I assume there was no disagreement until Babet and Sandilands got involved

bae (sic), Thursday, 8 August 2024 14:18 (one year ago)

i assume there's no disagreement now and that it was a business decision for better or worse, people are acting like kg has been brutally betrayed and is going to be homeless now or something

intheblanks, Thursday, 8 August 2024 17:56 (one year ago)

or were acting like that when this happened a month or so ago

whole thing is idiotic, had Black not freaked out over it I kinda doubt it would've been a story at all. cowardly shit too, Republicans say the most slanderous and nasty shit 24/7, but oooh no god forbid joke rock band Tenacious D made the same joke half the country made. feels like a real dick move for Jack Black to sell out his friend like that just to appease the people who are gonna call him a pedophile groomer regardless of what he does. then again this is the guy who made Shallow Hal so his judgment has always been pretty bad.

interstellar anthropologist+music philosopher, (Austin), Thursday, 8 August 2024 18:41 (one year ago)

and that it was a business decision for better or worse

basing any decision on speech by Babet is absurd, and on speech by Sandilands is contemptible.

bae (sic), Thursday, 8 August 2024 20:29 (one year ago)

"sell out his friend" cmon man, these guys are probably fine. they coordinated press releases the day after, and they'll probably be back on the road in a few years.

intheblanks, Thursday, 8 August 2024 20:40 (one year ago)

not sure who babet and sandilands are but i'm sure they suck

intheblanks, Thursday, 8 August 2024 20:41 (one year ago)

sandilands = gross radio announcer

babet = stupid conservative politician

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 8 August 2024 21:20 (one year ago)

how is this not selling out his friend?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 August 2024 21:45 (one year ago)

Babet is a real estate agent who was the sole electoral result of a billionaire dickhead running candidates in every seat nationwide at a cost of $100,000,000; he received 4% of the vote, only got through on One Nation preference flows, and the entire party was deregistered by the electoral commission three months later. He has complained that the $200k salary for a senator is too much of a paycut to warrant working, and subsequently mainly shitposts on twitter.

bae (sic), Thursday, 8 August 2024 23:46 (one year ago)

You’d have to ask KG whether he felt sold out by it. I don’t know the exact nature of the JB-KG friendship in 2024. Gass might be of the mind that “Jack Black’s career takes a hit” isn’t good for him either

Listen I hate rightwing dipshits getting a win as much as anyone, but the content of the joke in question is actually out-of-bounds for lots of people. If anyone truly thinks “half the country” made that joke, they need to hang out with more normies.

intheblanks, Friday, 9 August 2024 00:47 (one year ago)

I'm sure they're fine or will be fine behind the scenes, just the way it came out publicly made it seem that way, I mean their whole thing is two bros who stick together no matter what, I just didn't like it. then again it's Tenacious D who really cares. like the bigger part of the story to me is "Tenacious D is on tour???"

and yeah maybe not "half the country" literally but I heard so many people joke about it in private settings the ensuing week. maybe doing it the day after is a bit tasteless. but cmon like they're a comedy act who say "fuck" all the time God forbid they be a little edgy

frogbs, Friday, 9 August 2024 00:54 (one year ago)

I mean the dude is old and has made the entire experience of being an American so much worse in such a palpable way, even Republicans are way way more miserable and ornery, "wish he'd just drop dead" is not an unreasonable thought to have right now. obviously him getting shot would be very bad for the country but like if he had died of COVID I can bet half the country would be laughing their asses off

frogbs, Friday, 9 August 2024 00:57 (one year ago)

If anyone truly thinks “half the country” made that joke, they need to hang out with more normies.

when did you last hang out with normies in that country

bae (sic), Friday, 9 August 2024 01:57 (one year ago)

Are you talking about Australia? Never

intheblanks, Friday, 9 August 2024 02:06 (one year ago)

Are you talking about Australia? Never

intheblanks, Friday, 9 August 2024 02:06 (one year ago)

If you do mean Australia, do you think the JB/KG statements were purely due to concerns about Australian public opinion?

intheblanks, Friday, 9 August 2024 02:07 (one year ago)

even the idea that normies would think it too "out of bounds" is kinda sus. like yeah maybe at the workplace or the grocery store but the man has so thoroughly debased himself and this country, he isn't even remotely relatable as a human being, it would be like Jared Fogle dying to a good portion of the country

frogbs, Friday, 9 August 2024 02:10 (one year ago)

I dont think there would be quite as much blood in the streets if Jared Fogle died
