You get the drift - eg: Morrissey as Kenneth Williams, Courtney Love as Barbara Windsor, Momus as Sid James, Michael Stipe as Charles Hawtrey .... any more ideas ?

I'd rather have Jarvis Cocker in the Hawtrey role.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 October 2002 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone post a photo of the entire cast along with descriptions of what 'types' they were or something. I know of the Carry On series but know next to nothing about it.

Obviously these aren't on TV every other week over there in America. You are missing crappy seaside postcard-style jokes (if that means anything to Americans), with lots of clumsy innuendo and double entendres, but performed by a mix of very good and absolutely great comedy performers. Kenneth Williams in particular was something of a comic genius - imagine Stephen Fry (who I really like) as a poor xerox of some earlier star, and you're thereabouts. Sid James (middle aged lecher with the greatest dirty laugh ever) and Charles Hawtrey (akinny, camp, overgrown schoolboy wimp) were great too.

Sid James? Gorrrstrewth! That's bleedin' marvellous, that is! Ack ack ack!

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Stuart Murdoch - Jim Dale
Emma Pollock - Joan Sims
Gruff Rhys - Bernard Bresslaw
Alanis Morrissette - Hattie Jacques (better cast than as God, anyhow)

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 27 October 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Leo Di Caprio = Damon Albran

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 27 October 2002 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Which of those are you imagining was in Carry On films, Jel?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 October 2002 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd rather Damon Albaron as Sid James. Or maybe Graham Coxon.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 27 October 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

...and Alex James as Leslie Phillips (tho I'm not entirely conjvinced Phillips is a Carry On alumnus - still, nice idea)

Charlie (Charlie), Sunday, 27 October 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil Silvers as Steve Albini, obviously.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 27 October 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

before i could even finish reading the thread title i was thinking 'jarvis.' i don't care what role he plays, you can't do this without him.

Yanks: (scratches head in confusion) Maybe this show it very obscure, or PBS doesn't play it over in America.
