Bootlegs & The Old Skool

What exacty is the diference between early Hip-Hop tracks like "The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel" or "Play That Beat Mr.DJ (The Payoff Mix)" and the bootleg explosion of the past couple of years? Is it that bootlegs tend to sample entire songs (thus more Pop appeal?) If so, how does Kid606 fit into this?

Are you kidding? He's got the best moonshine around!

Kid 606 is a bootlegger in the same way that Osymsmo are bootleggers. Insofar as they aren't.

the bootleg movement/trend/phenomenon owes pretty much everything to the original ethos in hip hop of cutting up records in the mix live (ala Grandmaster Flash) and sampling in general. obviously there are technical differences between 'adventures of grandmaster flash' and 'intro inspection' in that one was recorded live on decks using just two pieces of vinyl at a time whereas the other required a computer and weeks of editing...and of course the former works as a single in itself but intro inspection is a lengthier artefact working on a potentially broader perspective and appeal...but there's really no difference between the old hip hop samplethons made for DJs and many of today's more sophisticated bootlegs created on computers in that they're fulfilling the same purpose

Kid 606 is a recording artist who SAMPLES...i dont think he's ever made an actual bootleg has he? the NWA thing was a remix...Osymyso has done a few bootlegs (Grandmaster vs Kylie, Thomas Bangalter vs Henry mancini) but otherwise is of the same general orientation as Kid 606 as a recording artist whose primary mandate is creating new music out of recycled and re-edited existing material

It's just funny that the boots explosion didn't happen sooner... at least live ones via two turntables. (I'm sure they've been done before, but not given an actual name, scene, hype, etc.) A cappellas and instrumentals have been around since the break of the 80s, at the very latest.

but the 'bootleg' term doesnt really make sense when applied to the art of live mixing - thats just inventive DJing and has been going on since Grandmaster FLash...esp. in hip hop and house music where acapellas and instrumentals or dubs are so prevalent and available. pretty much all the big DJs in both genres have all dabbled in mixing isolated elements of one track with others when mixing live...the hype surrounding this particular method of DJing does not seem any greater now than it was 5 or even 10 years ago, only the rise of the 'bedroom bootlegger' scene has reflected the media attention back onto it

I sort of promised myself not to do this anymore, but it was a thread I started:
Taking Sides: Adventures on the Wheels of Steel vs. George Gets His Freak On

anyway, there may be some helpful stuff for you on there, Daniel

have a look also at Tom's "why I love bootlegs" article on Freaky Trigger, which IIRC also examines yr question in passing...

so many bootlegs now...how to sort the wheat from the chaff??

blueski, Monday, 28 October 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

You download them all and delete the chaff :)

(Or don't listen to any of them)

Anyone heard either of the Princess Superstar 12"s of bootlegs/mash-ups (i.e. ones she made)? I was very tempted to get them when I was in the UK, but didn't fancy lugging vinyl around with me for 3 days. But with a recommendation, I might order them from Rough Trade or something.
