S/D - Hi, I used to be in a prog band, but it seems the times have changed and now I make "Artier" music

Kinda like Robert Wyatt, or This Heat.

I've heard mention of Art Bears (ex-Henry cow?). good?

I've also seen records around by Peter Hammill (ex-Vander graf). good?

I just picked up "God Save the Queen / Under Heavy Manners" by robert Fripp. the first side is all Frippertronics, which i find kind of boring, but the second side is Discotronics, which kicks ass. It's super funky, super minimal/repetitive and one of the songs David Byrne sings under a fake name.

also just picked up Fred Frith's "Gravity". It's a nice instrumental record celebrating dance music from around the world.

frith's "gravity" LP is totally great, especially the version of "dancing in the street."

Firth's "Gravity" is totally great, except for the version of "dancing in the street."

Based on the HC I've heard, Frith got a lot better after leaving prog. The Fred Frith Guitar Quartet's Ayaya Moses is fantastic, four brilliant guitarists playing with and against each other with such finesse and composed so well, moving through melodies and noise with great control over dynamics, rhythms, and timbre. His Quartets disc is great too, particularly the guitar piece. It achieves so many different spaces and moods. Guitar Solos is very impressive in terms of what he can get out of the instrument. I believe it's considered a classic of free improv on the guitar. There are also some good tracks on Speechless, which contains a lot of electronic experiments, often with a bit more of a pop sensibility. I particularly like "The Entire Works of Henry Cow", a collage piece which includes samples from every single HC track. The entire track lasts only one minute!

You can find more at his homepage>.

sundar, going to give a seminar on Frith in a couple days, Monday, 28 October 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

good luck with that sundar.

i've got the zorn/frith duo on incus and that's pretty wonderful. maybe something to listen to tonight whilst eating spaghetti.

I brought some Fred Frith to my high school music class, and one person teased me about the name long after. (If this seems to contradict my claim that I don't know anything about music theory: I have retained nothing from that class.)

Gravity is a very good record (featuring members of another great avant-prog band, Sammla Mammas Manna), as is the follow-up, Speechless. Art Bears were incredible -- much better than Henry Cow, I'm going to see them again and again (sorry, old SNL joke). See also the Science Group, with Frith, Cutler and some other neat people for a more modern twist on that sound.

anyone hear the solo Ben Watt record recorded with Robert Wyatt? i've never listened to EBTG, but the connection w/wyatt sparks my interest

Surely Hawkwind is the best example of this? (snort)

I think I may have been suffering from crippling withdrawal from not owning any This Heat for my entire life. Must get some.

(I was a huge fan in a past life you see)

i take back that question about Ben Watt. i heard some clips online and they just sound like Belle & Sebastian. not my cup of tea at the moment, but thanks
