Do people still rate Lessons 1, 2 and 3 (I've never heard them)? If so, I might get this. But does a whole CD of this stuff get boring after a while, or is it a solid gold classic all the way through?

I've had the original "Lessons 1-3" on bootleg vinyl for about 20 years (encased in a Bruce Springsteen bootleg sleeve!!?!) and I still find them very entertaining, though acknowledge that for young 'uns the interest might be purely archaeological - they might find the pace a bit slow. Shadow's "Lesson 4" (which I also have on a 7" of highly questionable legality) is more or less a template which he developed further with the Brainfreeze mix. But if you don't have any of them, then yes get it.

Another one definitely worth getting is Steinski's "Nothing To Lose" which, albeit priced steeply at £20 in HMV, is well worth having; a sort of formalist response to the Cubist glee of "2 Many DJs."

I like them, but they sound pretty played out now, just because the samples have been used so many times since then.

nothing to fear?

i really rated cut chemist's entries in this series. only one of the ddsteniski ones were any good

picked it up last week, just to have 'em all in one place. of the originals, "Lesson 3" is my fave... '1' sounds a bit dated now, but to realise that it was done with tape rather than samples is pretty amazing. of the newer tracks, Cut Chemist has integrated his various takes into lots of stuff over the past few years, and Shadow's will also sound familiar to anyone with passing interest.

they're all a bit different from one another, so it's not like listening to the same track over + over + over... but it's not a ton of fun to listen to them at all at once, either. in the end, it's convenient to have, but not essential.

Yeah thanks bob - I should have said "Nothing To Fear."

I still really like all three DD&S "Lessons." The Shadow one is OK, as is Chemist's "4," but Chemist's "6" is fantabulous. Might be my favorite of the group. As far as the CD in question goes, the live stuff is negligible (though the first one, track 7, is OK).

ta for the comments, folks. I have Shadow's 4 and a version of Chemist's 6 already, but I guess this is another CD for "THE LIST"

five years pass...

LESSON 3 never gets old as far as i'm concerned. HOW are these guys not better known and respected more?

I dunno, I think "Lesson 3" is great, was just listening to it today actually :)
