cute pisstake of The Strokes, or at least the general fad for 'The' bands but the whole video is a 'Last Nite' mock-up complete with matching retroey suits (ala Hives) and collapsing cymbal stands...hmmm, what are they getting at exactly?

blueski, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

All that plus metal riffs. I love these guys!

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I read something where they said it's meant more as a tribute than a piss take on those bands (frankly, I wish it were the latter). Something to the effect of we're not as cool as those bands or something. Speaking of, has NME just insured its complete and utter irrelevance?: http://nme.com/news/103355.htm (meant as an aside not a hijack.)

Aaron W, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe they think all this nu-garage stuff is just a bit pants.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

best part is Sum41 are every bit the same media hype creation as those other two bands.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

music is a media, discuss.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

a lightbulb is media, read the lecture.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

god that NME cool list is pathetic - how the fuck is Nelly cool as opposed to just annoying? and Craig Nicholls?! Fab over Julian? christ they're desperate...

(my own personal 10...off the top of my head)
Jack & Meg White
Thomas Bangalter
Pharrell Williams
Mike Skinner
Richard D James
Michel Gondry (video director)
David Holmes
Howlin' Pelle Almqvist
Roots Manuva

God, it's so hard to decide which is worse, Strokes or Sum 41. Both were created to cash in on a movement, both are basically boy bands.

They should just kill each other in the Thunderdome.

David Allen, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

best idea i heard all day.

mary b. (mary b.), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

They're from Ajax so maybe we can toss them in the Pickering Reactor with their little skateboards and let them melt.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

So how is this pastiche of the Strokes different to the pastiche of the Beasties that has formed their career so far?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Rick Rueben as Mr Assablanca is what your getting at?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

God, it's so hard to decide which is worse, Strokes or Sum 41. Both were created to cash in on a movement, both are basically boy bands.

So a band forming means they were "created," huh? And other than being young and male, how are they boy bands again?

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Put together and promoted cause they have a look, given a presentation, told what to say, where to say it.
Interview The Strokes (or a certain band from Texas in reality) or you can't interview Radiohead deals.
As Nardwaur asked:
"Julian, whats the importance of great cheeckbones in The Strokes?"

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Strokes for big brother, Sum 41 for little brother

its that simple

blueski, Tuesday, 29 October 2002 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like this song. It'd get a nine from me in the focus group.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

They're both good bands! Dressing up in silly clothes in a video is great! Making music geeks mad cuz the singer's cute is classic! (ok, neither band has a cute singer but my point still stands.)

Sean (Sean), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

This would get a 10+ from me, same as "Someday" or "Hard to Explain".

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

They're both good bands

I am of the other opinion. Of course their cute, they look like my little cusions all trying to prove how hard they are, how they care about nothing, you know Sid said "No Future, maan" and they look exactly like the band (Sum41).
But then they get all flustered when I tell them of course there is a future, their urban middle class with average marks and will go to university for at least two years and so on.
I haven't seen any of them in two years or so but I have been right so far, they all went to university.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 1 November 2002 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

but I totally don't get that vibe from Sum 41, they seem quite jolly and optimistic to me.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 1 November 2002 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

*Hugs Mr. Noodles*

Thank you.

Also: Anarchy, the most moronic idea that anybody takes seriously. Worse then scientology!

Even worse: The kids who buy the 15 dollar shirts at Hot Topic to show what anarchists they are.

David Allen, Friday, 1 November 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally don't get that vibe from Sum 41

No, they are pretty nonthreatening arent they. They look the part but with all the edges taken off, like Windows XP looks all bubbly and cartoonish next too Win2k.
Still, the main point is Sum41 aren't very good and the only reason you've heard them is because CFNY thought they looked "cute". By "cute" I mean marketable to the preteen to 15 yearold kids in the General Toronto Area.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 1 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I just saw this video. Are they tearing a strip off? Aren't they? I can't tell either. My weapons are useless! Ah Sum41, you so crafty...
