Can anyone recommend any good writing on obsessive fans or the psychology of fandom in general?

some things I am thinking about:
- fandom as identity, self-definition thru identifying oneself as a fan
- celebs as proxy versions of self
- the line btwn innocent fandom & obsession
- how being a fan can be positive or "empowering" (sorry, awful word i know)
- public & private elements of being a fan; being a fan as being a member of a subculture

VH1 and MTV just did a couple of shows on this topic, notably one about celebrity stalking (on VH1) and one about "graveside groupies" (MTV), which featured a pair of woman who dropped out of school when they heard Shannon Hoon died. I mean, really.....Shannon Hoon???? Giveth me a break!

Iny any event, they re-broadcast that shit like crazy, so check yer listings.

three years pass...
Has anyone here bordered on obsessive fandom?

I was watching the story of Paul Goresh on youtube, who posed as a VCR repairman to gain access to John Lennon at the Dakota...Really creepy behaviour - but it seems to pass almost without comment in this item.
