Just wondering...

Callum (Callum), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

sigh.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

But Callum, you're going to hate yourself at 15 after a few more years pass. Trust me, I went through the same wringer. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

what about fey, sub-4AD whalesong starshine bullshit?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

You know nothing about house or disco, who are you kidding?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

yawn.

stevo (stevo), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

ARE YOU SURE YOU"RE NOT CALUM?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Stupid Retro Shit released some pretty fine singles.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I need a fucking drink...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Why won't any of you answer my question?

And I doubt I will ever find it in my heart to hate anyone who hates disco.

Callum (Callum), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

What's your problem with disco then?

I know I can be guilty of this sometimes, but you're not giving any reasons why any of these should be hated. If you give some reasons why you hate them, people may actually contribute something worthwhile to this thread.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Why don't you tell us why you like something? Could it be because you're unable to?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Why won't any of you answer my question?

Maybe none of us actually hate any of those three things.

And I doubt I will ever find it in my heart to hate anyone who hates disco.

You might say otherwise if someone who hated disco decided to make fun of you for listening to 'that stupid gay goth shit' like Tool and Sigur Ros (I've heard it before myself...).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps, although I find it incredibly easy to ignore those people, as you lot should find it incredibly easy to ignore me.

Callum (Callum), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Along with my 'fremme neppa venette' (note: must remember to start a thread asking what this means) tee shirt i want one that says 'disco sux' just so i can look ironic and maybe get into the nme. failing that i shall form my Bush tribute band called Minge and bleat about macky dees whilst surgically attaching a bong to my lips. cuz like, people like that are generally crazy and make great pop star material.um. yes.

slit magnet, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be easier if you weren't such an arse.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

wha'?!? explain.

slit magnet, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

"Answer my question!" and "Ignore me!" are mutually-exclusive requests.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

oh him. i think. sorry, pro plus + essay = paranoia + incoherence

sm, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway disco is retro isn't it? and so is house to a certain extent..

sm, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Callum did you read my post? I was trying to be helpful.

Just for the record, Calum, I like some disco, I love some house but I don't know what you mean by 'Stupid Retro Shit' because you're being far too vague. I could say that I can hate some 'Stupid Retro Shit', and did so with a passion in the mid nineties (your OCS's, Cast's etc.) but there's so much music out there that retro stuff, whatever is the trend being recycled, normally illicits a brief nod from me before I quickly move on tho listening to something else.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

my guess is stupid retro shit relates to the strokes/white stripes/hives et al. my second guess is that you hate disco and house more, ie. house and disco are thee stupidest, shittest musics ever, and serve as a handy shitometre to measure against 'stupid retro shit' which you hate but not as much as the others... sorry for being presumptious, please correct me/berate me if i'm wrong.
my third guess, which isn't actually a guess but the true answer, is: SUBJECTIVITY REIGNS SUPREME.

s magnet, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:53 (twenty-three years ago)

callum suddenly i have a horrid feeling that i've spent an inordinate amount of my life defending some of yr favorite bands.

stop being such a total dope.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

There is no subjectivity, there is only my objectivity!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

SUBJECTIVITY REIGNS SUPREME

My battle cry.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

'There is no subjectivity, there is only my objectivity!'

your objectivity is more subjective than my objectivity's subjectivity.

s magnet, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha jel that was funny

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"that stupid gay goth shit' like Tool and Sigur Ros "

yess, the members of sigur ros are homosexual. (ducking for cover...)

kephm, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

callum- you'll regret this when you're older. please apologize.

actually, are you sure you're 15? you sound like some boring 'punk'. sure you didn't see talking heads and television and maybe this is a thread that should be titled 'Those were the days?' instead.

you're 40 and need to grow up.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I like some of both Sigur Ros and Tool. But guess what? There is a lot retro shit going on in both. Shhh.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Tsk, Byron, you're giving it away!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 22:45 (twenty-three years ago)

bnw's always giving it away.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigur Rós totally lost me after I saw the video to Svefn-n-Englar. Complete fucking wankers.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 30 October 2002 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 31 October 2002 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Only by killing disco could rock affirm its threatened masculinity and restore the holy dyad of cold brew and undemanding sex partners. Disco bashing became a major preoccupation in 1977. At the moment when Saturday Night Fever and Studio 54 achieved zeitgeist status, rock rediscovered a rage it had been lacking since the '60s, but this time the enemy was a culture with "plastic" and "mindless" (read effeminate) musical tastes. Hating disco and house is a homophobic and xenophobic reaction. I forgive you.

Why is everyone bagging on Callum so much? I don't get it. If he really is only 15, then I don't know why everyone's being so obnoxious

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 31 October 2002 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

geeta we're only 14

he's picking on us

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 31 October 2002 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Only by killing sigur ros could ilm affirm its threatened masculinity and restore the holy dyad of cold brew and undemanding sex partners. sigur ros bashing became a major preoccupation in 2000. At the moment when aegatis byrjun and singing really high like achieved zeitgeist status, ilm rediscovered a rage it had been lacking since never. but this time the enemy was a culture with "plastic" and "mindless" (read effeminate) musical tastes. Examined in light of the ensuing political backlash, it's clear that the slogan of this movement--"sigur ros are gay whales!"--was the first cry of the angry white male.

hanging on the passenger side of his best friend's ride trying to holler at me.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 31 October 2002 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I would NEVER try to holler at Sterling; my momma taught me better than that. Oh crap, wrong song.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 October 2002 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

dan, do you feel unpretty?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 31 October 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I AIN'T THE ONE FOR YOU.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

You gotta Kick out the house!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

De La Soul right now is Vital and Key!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

'There is no subjectivity, there is only my objectivity!'
your objectivity is more subjective than my objectivity's subjectivity.

This sounds like a college-level version of an argument I witnessed in fifth grade.

Kid #1: No matter where you go. I'll always be HERE and you'll always be THERE.
Kid #2: Nuh-uh..I'm HERE and YOU are over THERE.
Kid #1: Nuh-uh! Wherever I go is HERE to me, and not THERE. (Moves 5 feet away.) See! I'm still HERE, but you're over THERE!

I blame weed being smoked in the bathroom and relativity being taught in the classroom.

Lord Custos Omega (Lord Custos Omega), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

now our tlcing has been derailed by illogical custosity!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

that is the greatest fifth grade classroom evah!

(and by greatest i mean deeply disturbing)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I apologise to you all for having some opinions. I shall do my best not to have any more, and to simply talk about very old bands and Mercury Music Prize nominees with, seemingly, no sense of humour, forever and ever.

Callum (Callum), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe you should apologize more for assuming our opinions would jibe with yours and expecting us to chime in "oooh disco ick blech get it away!"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 31 October 2002 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Tip to Callum: "I hate disco" is a perfectly fine thing to say, but until you're willing to say "AND HERE'S WHY..." people are not going to take you very seriously.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Fine. It sucks because I have never, EVER heard ANY disco music with ANY emotion in it at all. I also blame disco for dance-pop, which is EVIL and WRONG.

Callum (Callum), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

do you mean emotion as in sadness, happiness, perseverence, heartbreak, etc? or as in "raw, unmediated drive for conveying emotions and staking out authenticity"?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:07 (twenty-three years ago)

It lacks any emotion at all. It's like most rap music, and house music. It's just "phat tunes" and "funky shit". Maybe I'm just some white kid pissed off at his own lack of funkiness, but I just think disco is crass and annoying.

Callum (Callum), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it emotionless or is it expressing emotion in a manner foreign to you? What are you looking for when you're trying to identify emotion in music?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:23 (twenty-three years ago)

crooning in esperanto.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't explain it exactly. It just seems to be devoid of emotion. That's the best way I can put it.

Callum (Callum), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, let's try this; you like Tool, yes? So do I. I love the way the music is structured: the unpredictable rhythms, Maynard's super-clear voice alternating between crooning and shouting, the start-stop flow of their songs, some of the word-play; it all just works on a visceral level for me. It's fantastic stuff.

When I listen to disco (which, admittedly, isn't often; I'm much more into the music that came afterwards), I'm usually listening to how the singer is carrying the tune. A lot of disco singers have a strong grounding in gospel music and imbue a good number of the songs with a really bluesy, soulful spirituality often at odds with the hedonistic party vibe going through the backing track (Donna Summer in particular was great at this). House divas follow the same trends; CeCe Peniston sings every song like it's her last chance at redemption, whereas Martha Wash muscles her way into a song and makes it a testimonial. Even someone from a completely different background like Kylie Minogue adds something to a song; in her case, she sings "Love At First Sight" with this coquettish yearning and optimism that makes you want to hug her all night. Even instrumental tracks put across different feelings; the blissed-out party drone of Cubic 22's "Night In Motion" demands that you march to the dance floor and groove while other tracks, like Acen's "Close Your Eyes" or Messiah's "There Is No Law", revel in chaos and disorientation, slamming you left and right and up and down until you don't know if you're coming or going and all you can do is reach for the sky and dance. Dark, menacing tracks like Panacea make you want to lock your doors and look out for the maniac with the chainsaw, but something like Photek's "Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu" strikes an emotional core by stripping common emotional signifiers out and stalking you relentlessly with a precisely devastating beat.

Granted, not everything I listed is disco, but it's very safe to say that without disco it wouldn't have existed.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 31 October 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

"mias, mias, mias, las mi akir me ke deziro"

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 31 October 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

What Dan said. And further: we're not angry with you for simply having an opinion, we ALL have them and by no means are we all agreeing with each other. Anything but! And thinking that we're all into discussing "very old bands and Mercury Music Prize nominees with, seemingly, no sense of humour" completely misses the range and point of the board.

There's a lot here that's celebrated I can't stand, there's a lot I love people here hate. It's just what happens when a lot of opinions are brought together, and yours are perfectly valid -- you really love Sigur Ros, you really hate house, I feel the opposite, generally speaking. But there's plenty you and I agree on as well (like Dan, I'm a huge fan of Tool and have been for years). Just learn to relax -- a touch, at least! -- and consider where we're all coming from. Individual, distinct pleasures in music -- and the multiplicity of opinions -- is a grand thing. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 October 2002 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's fantastic that somebody saying "I hate disco" can get 66 new answers in this day and age.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

We all thought it was a Talking Heads thread Tom.
